Chapter 90: I have no doubt

Silas returned shortly after Alexander was done with dinner and Ebenezer who was lounging on the couch watched him walk through the door, his eyes monitoring his every move.

The wizard didn’t cast them a glance as he climbed up the stairs that led to his library and Ebenezer scoffed, turning his attention to Alexander who was washing the dishes that he had used.

"He acts like we are invisible." Ebenezer mumbled and Alexander smirked.

"And why does that bother you so much?" He asked and Ebenezer was thoughtfully silent, contemplating his thoughts.

"I just want him to notice me and tremble in fear knowing that I could end his life whenever I wanted." The vampire admitted.

"Well that’s not going to happen anymore time soon." Alexander pointed out and the vampire groaned, knowing that the man was right.

"You should retire for the night. I will keep watch just in case Silas tries to escape in the middle of the night." Ebenezer said, and Alexander who was already feeling sleepy, nodded and went off to his room.

....

Hours into the night, Ebenezer sneakily climbed up the stairs, hoping to catch Silas off guard and once he entered the library, he was pleased to find the wizard asleep on the table.

He tiptoed towards him, arms stretched out and a devious smile adorning his lips.

"Seriously, Ashford?" Silas asked as he sat up, lazily rubbing his eyes before looking at the vampire that was planning to strangle him in his sleep.

Disappointment at his failed task settled at the bottom of Ebenezer’s heart as he glared at the wizard that was now wide awake.

"I will succeed in killing you, one day." Ebenezer swore and the faint smirk on Silas’ lips infuriated him as he balled his palms into fists.

"I have no doubt." Silas assured, his voice serious and Ebenezer’s fine brows furrowed into a small frown.

"Are you planning on making it easy for me?" The vampire asked and Silas’ gaze was sharp and unwavering as his golden eyes met his.

"No, but I have learned from experience that persistence eventually pays off." The wizard admitted as he broke their eye contact and stood up.

Ebenezer was rendered silent as he watched the wizard, not sure of what to make of his last statement.

"Your entire life seems to revolve around killing me but I am curious, what will you do with your immortality once you have accomplished the task?" Silas asked, genuinely curious as he turned his back on the vampire, pausing in his steps to hear what Ashford could say.

A long silence stretched on before Silas started to walk away, not sure he was going to receive a reply.

"I have not really thought of what I will do but I will figure it out." Ashford eventually replied and Silas walked away, the reply he had received similar to what he had expected.

The next morning, Ebenezer tried not to focus on the faint pleasant scent that was wafting off the white shirt that Silas had lent him as they walked out of the tree house to get started on their journey.

Silas smelt like the forest on a cool and breezy evening, strangely reminding the vampire of the evening walks that he used to enjoy when he was still human.

Too bad, Ebenezer still wanted to kill him even though he smelt so good.

Alexander happily munched on a warm loaf of bread, completely oblivious to his friend’s thoughts as he followed Silas through the fog.

Ebenezer put his thoughts aside as he hastened his steps to catch up with the duo.

He was going to make sure Silas didn’t survive the journey that they had just started.

They walked in silence for the entire morning until they arrived at a spot in the forest that looked normal and they could see the fragments of afternoon sky.

Alexander frowned slightly when he stepped ahead, feeling like he had been robbed of something important.

"No magic can be wielded in this place." Silas explained when he noticed Alexander’s alarmed facial expression.

He also worried a little about revealing the detail to Ashford who clearly couldn’t wait to jump for his neck.

Silas blinked, slowly averting his thoughts from how vulnerable he was.

"Why?" Alexander was truly curious on why magic couldn’t work in the place they were in.

"I have no idea. Probably one of natures rare occurrences." Silas replied and that didn’t seem to ease Alexander’s worry.

"Doesn’t that leave us more vulnerable." Alexander pointed out and Silas nodded grimly.

"It does but most of the forest’s dangerous creatures seem to avoid this part of the forest so you have nothing to worry about." Silas added and Alexander frowned.

"I assume they avoid it for good reason." He voiced his doubts and Silas glanced back at him, his golden eyes flickering with traces of irritation.

"I have passed through these woods for centuries and I believe it’s safe enough. Do you want to pass around like all the other creatures out there?" Silas asked and Alexander swallowed softly as he remembered the vicious hellhounds that had traumatized him the day before.

He could endure anything never to run into those creatures again.

"Let’s continue." Alexander replied and Silas led the way.

"Wait, how long are we going to spend in this part of the forest?" Alexander asked.

"A day or two. It really depends on how fast we walk and whether or not we run into any trouble." Silas replied and the journey resumed in silence.

Ebenezer who was totally unaffected saw an opportunity as he pinned his sky blue eyes on Silas.

If no magic could be wielded in this place, that meant that Silas was vulnerable and Ebenezer could get to kill him much easily.

The vampire nearly pounced on him the next second but he paused in his tracks and contemplated his plan.

Silas could attempt to fight him and he had no idea how good his fighting skills were so why not wait until he was asleep or tired?

They were clearly going to be spending the night in this odd part of the forest and Ebenezer smirked, heavily anticipating nightfall.
