Chapter 64: Daddy, mommy is in so much pain (Alpha Zach)
’This is the best thing I’ve ever heard you say or do,’ my wolf, Tubal, said as Gaius embraced me. I felt a rush of emotions that I had never experienced before, emotions that I had never received from my parents or twin brother.
Only Iris had embraced me like this before, which made me miss her even more. However, as Gaius spoke, my thoughts were consumed by Annabelle. Despite my usual infallibility, she had warned me that I was making a mistake, a warning that I had foolishly ignored.
After all that Annabelle had done for me, I had failed to protect her from her accusers. "Zach, are you alright? I’m really hungry," Gaius repeated, snapping me out of my thoughts. It then dawned on me that I hadn’t eaten in three days.
As I was about to suggest that we cook together and celebrate our friendship over a meal, Gaius interrupted, "Alpha, do you mind if I send a gamma..." I quickly interjected, "The tribe no longer has a gamma. It’s just you and me now."
Gaius was taken aback, but as we walked back to the pack house, I explained everything to him. Elated, he said, "You know what, I always missed this side of you, which gives me hope that the spell is losing its power over you." Warmth filled my heart.
There was something that made me hate her passionately, but I didn’t know if that was what Gaius was referring to. How could there be a spell when witchcraft was banned from this tribe and many others?
What spell was he talking about? About to ask, I saw him picking up some groceries and my mind went blank. Cooking together distracted me from the challenges ahead, and I ate heartily, sleeping peacefully before being plagued by a bad dream.
"Dad, you failed mom. Are you going to fail me too?" I saw a pup in a crib, calling me dad. How could that be? He held carrot juice, with my eyes and face, but his hair was red, like that woman from that night, whom I now knew as Annabelle.
Just as Zion said, this pup and I seemed to have a lot in common, creating an instant connection. It wasn’t from the mark I gave Annabelle to track her or the blood Zion drew from me. This connection was a bond between a father and a son, a familiar feeling I shared with my own parents.
As I approached the crib, I held the pup in my arms, feeling his tiny arms wrap around my neck.
"I’m so sorry for everything. I’ve made mistakes, but I promise to make it right," I reassured him. His smile quickly faded into a frown.
"Daddy, mommy is in so much pain," a tear rolled down his cheek, and I felt a deep sense of sorrow.
"I know, and I’m trying to fix it. She took..." I hesitated, almost mentioning Ivy’s death, but Gaius’s words echoed in my mind, suggesting Iris may have died from other causes.
"What did she take?" He asked softly, and before I could respond, I woke up from the dream, drenched in sweat.
The memory of the dream about Annabelle flooded back. She had rejected me, and I needed to find a way to make amends. I immediately contacted Zion through our mindlink. "I need to see Belle."
The name slipped out because I had heard her mother use it, while everyone else called her Anna and Zion referred to her as Bella. Belle seemed like a better option to me, but Zion was not as welcoming as before.
’Zach, I offered you a chance to make amends, but you refused. Now, it’s too late. Due to the pandemic, I prefer not to welcome non-tribe members.’
This situation was not new to me, and I knew how to protect myself from viruses. Even if I were to catch one, my wolf’s Alpha powers would ensure quick healing.
’You know I’m an Alpha. My body will heal faster than you think,’ I assured him.
"Well, that’s my way of saying no. Bella doesn’t even want to hear your name, so I’ve kept many things from her," he replied calmly.
Although I was upset, I knew I didn’t have the right to be. "In that case, let me see my pup," I requested.
He chuckled from the other end of the line. "You mean the one you almost killed? Forget it, Zach. You rejected both the mother and the pup, and trust me, they are doing fine without you."
I couldn’t bring myself to beg, but after the pain I had caused her, I felt compelled to speak up. "
Fine, she saved my life. I slept with her under the influence of drugs," I admitted, recalling how she had drugged me, though the details were hazy in my mind.
"Well, she killed Iris, so we’re even. She shouldn’t take what I did to heart," I indirectly explained, risking Zion’s anger. "I don’t think you’re ready to see her," he said, blocking me from mind linking him. It will take at least a month before I’m unblocked.
Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, I couldn’t travel without his consent. With Zion’s warning that he would harm himself if I showed my face at his tribe again, I turned to Gaius and explained the situation.
"Zach, I take some of the blame because I was also deceived and thought Kari was the one. She used spells that I later discovered can only be broken by your mate. I thought by changing your flavors with the right ones, you would be freed, but the situation is more complex than I realized, and only Anna can truly save you," Gaius explained.
His words left me puzzled. "What are you saying? I’m not under any spell," I replied.
He smiled sadly. "Zach, do you believe that Annabelle drugged you that night?" he asked, causing me to frown. "She was in charge of the drinks, and all the evidence points to her."
"What does your wolf say?" he inquired, I sensed that something wasn’t adding up.
