Chapter 44: Tricking Kari (Beta Gaius)

"Alpha Zach, Alpha Rhodes Cloud is a good friend of yours, and his Luna is kind. I believe your mate will be safe with them at the Umbra Kin Tribe," I suggested, understanding that Alpha Zach did not actually intend for me to be with Kari.

He seemed to have ulterior motives that I couldn’t quite pinpoint, possibly suspecting a connection between Kari and the red-haired girl she had impersonated.

Handling such delicate matters required a strategic approach. While I had a hunch that Annabelle might be the red-haired girl, I lacked concrete evidence, and there were still inconsistencies that needed clarification.

The situation demanded our attention, but I couldn’t allow Kari to persist in her malevolent actions.

Sending her away would help restore order to the tribe and break free from any lingering spells. Despite her initial reluctance, Kari eventually agreed, stating, "The Kin tribe will indeed be the best place for me."

Little did she know about the trusted allies I had within that tribe. "Alright, give me a few hours. I will come to take you," I assured her before swiftly heading to the omegas area with the Alpha.

"If the omegas are responsible, we can improve their living conditions," Alpha Zach said. I was touched by his compassion. This tribe was unique in giving omegas the opportunity to reform and become valued members, eventually earning full tribe membership.

Initially, he subjected them to harsh conditions, but once they proved themselves and contributed to the tribe, their living conditions improved—a source of envy.

From all perspectives, he was on track to becoming the best alpha among the tribes. However, his handling of Annabelle’s situation tarnished his character.

His distrust of her was understandable given the evidence, but I wish he would also trust his instincts. "I will ensure it is taken care of," I assured him, rushing to the house where the incident occurred.

The concern in Alpha Zach’s eyes mirrored my own, but there was nothing I could do to ease the pain at that moment.

Upon our arrival, the healers were already present, and the mother’s cries over her stillborn pup were heart-wrenching. Alpha Zach had paled, as if it was his pup in that condition.

"Why haven’t you taken any action?" Alpha Zach’s voice was filled with anger as he directed his question at the healers, who lowered their heads. One of them spoke up,

"Alpha, your fiancée is here, but we are facing a new problem after the boils incident that occurred a little over a month ago."

Honestly, I had forgotten about that incident since it only affected two people and resolved on its own without a cure from the healers. Despite Kari impersonating the real red-haired girl, we still had a few years to find her before the curse took effect.

Something didn’t seem right, and I was eager to uncover the truth.

"We thought her presence had eliminated it, but now it seems not," the head healer concluded, leaving me at a loss for suggestions for the first time.

"Monitor the pregnant she-wolves closely. I will find a solution to this," Alpha Zach declared with determination. "We can’t afford to lose another life, and no pup will be aborted. Life is precious, so for now, convey the message that no member of this tribe can impregnate their mates until this issue is resolved.

There was much to be done, and Alpha Zach had not rested since his return from the Lunar Echoes tribe. Despite my desire to help, he insisted that I take Kari away, which I agreed to.

Her presence would only complicate matters, and it wouldn’t be right to harm her before finding the real red-haired girl. After learning from Alpha Zach about Gamma Reid’s torture, I realized that Kari might choose death over confessing if we confront her directly. Therefore, it would be best to have someone monitor her until we gather the necessary clues to locate the red-haired girl.

"Seeing her makes me nauseous," Alpha Zach confessed. I agreed with him and he instructed, "Assign someone to keep an eye on her, gather information on her interactions and whereabouts. Once I uncover her accomplices, she will be of no use to us."

His ruthless demeanor was evident, but I couldn’t help but wonder if he would regret misjudging Annabelle later on. Perhaps it would be too late to rectify his mistake.

"Understood, Alpha," I replied, knowing that he would not rest until the issue was resolved.

As I escorted Kari to the Umbra Kin Tribe, she attempted various distractions, but none succeeded. Unbeknownst to her, I sensed the darkness within her.

My only uncertainty was regarding her true nature. "Can we take a break? My feet are sore," she suddenly requested. I glanced at her before focusing back on the road.

"I’m the one driving, yet you, the passenger, are complaining of fatigue. What should I say?" I retorted.

Her expression shifted, but I remained unfazed. Despite her persistence, she never gave up trying to manipulate the situation. I’m hungry. A pregnant woman needs to eat, so can you stop somewhere for us to grab a bite?"

Feeling like she was up to something, I made up an excuse. "I didn’t bring my wallet. I left it behind." It wasn’t the smartest excuse, but it worked because I had already hidden her purse.

"I have mine and I’m willing to pay. You don’t have to be so polite with me," she smirked. I smiled as I watched the color slowly drain from her face. "Where is my purse? It was right here in this compartment. Did it fall?" I had already disposed of it while she was napping, so whoever she wanted to meet us during the break was out of luck.

"Don’t worry, it’s just about a thirty-minute drive to the Umbra Kin tribe. Food will be waiting for us." She opened her mouth to say something, but nothing came out. Satisfied that she wouldn’t say anything more, a smile stretched across my lips.
