Chapter 65: I’m the one who’s lucky to have him
Dr. Choi exhaled slowly, watching the monitors as Haeun’s vitals finally stabilized. The tension in the room seemed to lift, though the atmosphere remained heavy with exhaustion. He turned to Yeongsoo, who was still leaning over Haeun, his hand tightly gripping Haeun’s limp one.
"He’s stabilized," Dr. Choi said, his voice low but reassuring. "But it’s going to take a few hours for his fever to go down completely. His body’s been through a lot, so we need to give him time."
Yeongsoo nodded, relief flooding his chest, though he could still feel the lingering weight of worry. His heart was still pounding from the intense moments before, but at least Haeun was safe—for now.
"What time is it?" Yeongsoo asked, his voice rough from the strain of the night.
Dr. Choi glanced at the wall clock. "It’s just past 2 a.m. We’ll keep him under observation, but the worst has passed. You should try to rest too."
Yeongsoo looked at Haeun’s peaceful, though pale, face, the fever still clinging to him. He didn’t want to leave his side, not when Haeun had been so close to the edge. He shook his head, exhaustion creeping into his bones, but the need to stay near Haeun outweighed everything.
"I’ll stay here," he murmured, his voice soft. "I can’t leave him."
Dr. Choi gave a small, understanding nod. "I’ll have a bed brought in for you. You need to sleep as well. He’s going to need you when he wakes up."
With that, Dr. Choi left the room, leaving Yeongsoo alone with Haeun. The room was dimly lit by the soft glow of the monitors, casting long shadows across the floor. The rhythmic beeping of the machines was the only sound, a constant reminder that Haeun was still here, still fighting.
Yeongsoo sat down in the chair beside the bed, his eyes never leaving Haeun. He gently brushed his fingers through Haeun’s damp hair, his heart heavy with emotions he couldn’t quite name. Relief, fear, and something else—all of it tangled together as he watched Haeun sleep.
He couldn’t shake the image of Haeun earlier, burning up with fever, his body rejecting everything. The fear of losing him had been all-consuming, and even though Dr. Choi had assured him things were stable now, the lingering dread refused to let go.
As he sat there, the minutes stretched into hours, the night dragging on slowly. Every now and then, Haeun would stir, his body still restless from the fever, but he didn’t wake. Each time, Yeongsoo would gently rub his back, whispering soothing words to keep him calm.
By the time 4 a.m. rolled around, Yeongsoo’s eyes were heavy, the adrenaline that had kept him going now fading. His body screamed for rest, but he stayed awake, watching over Haeun. He leaned forward, resting his head on the edge of the bed, his hand still intertwined with Haeun’s.
"I’m not leaving you," Yeongsoo whispered, the exhaustion finally catching up to him as his eyes fluttered shut.
The soft beeping of the monitors filled the quiet hospital room as the hours dragged on, the world outside still enveloped in the silence of early morning. Yeongsoo’s breathing had slowed, the exhaustion finally overtaking him as he drifted off, his head resting against Haeun’s bed, their fingers still entwined.
Haeun stirred slightly, his fever gradually ebbing away. His body felt weak, but the burning sensation had lessened, and the cool air in the room offered him some relief. He shifted in the bed, eyes fluttering open just enough to catch a glimpse of Yeongsoo, his face peaceful yet lined with fatigue.
For a moment, Haeun’s heart ached. He could feel the weight of everything pressing down on him—his condition, the baby, the constant worry. But more than anything, he was overwhelmed by the sight of Yeongsoo sitting vigilantly beside him, never leaving his side, even when exhaustion had clearly taken its toll.
"Yeongsoo..." Haeun’s voice was a soft rasp, barely audible, but he didn’t have the strength to speak louder.
Yeongsoo didn’t stir at first, his head still resting against the bed. Haeun smiled faintly, his fingers weakly squeezing Yeongsoo’s hand. The warmth of his touch sent a quiet reassurance through him, a sense of safety he hadn’t felt in a long time.
Despite the haze of fatigue and the lingering discomfort, Haeun’s mind wandered to how much he had relied on Yeongsoo without even realizing it. The quiet strength Yeongsoo carried, the way he always stepped in when Haeun needed him most, had become his anchor in this chaotic storm of uncertainty. The thought filled him with a deep sense of gratitude, one he hadn’t fully expressed.
As the minutes ticked by, Haeun drifted back into a light sleep, the fever slowly fading. Time passed in a blur, the room still cloaked in the soft pre-dawn light when Dr. Choi returned to check on him.
"How’s he doing?" Dr. Choi’s voice was low as he quietly entered, careful not to disturb either of them.
Yeongsoo stirred awake at the sound, blinking groggily as he lifted his head. He straightened up, wincing slightly from the stiffness in his neck. "Fever’s gone down a bit," he muttered, glancing at Haeun.
Dr. Choi nodded, checking the monitors. "He’s improving. His body’s starting to respond to the treatment. It’s good that you were able to provide the pheromones when you did. It probably saved him from another serious crash."
Yeongsoo looked over at Haeun, who was still resting, the tension in his body finally easing. He felt a wave of relief wash over him, but it was tinged with lingering worry. "How long until he’s fully stable?" he asked quietly.
"A few more hours, maybe. His fever should break completely soon, but we’ll keep monitoring him." Dr. Choi gave Yeongsoo a reassuring look. "You did well. He’s going to be okay."
Yeongsoo nodded, but the worry still gnawed at him. "And the baby?" he asked after a pause.
Dr. Choi’s expression softened. "Everything looks stable for now, but we’ll need to keep a close eye on Haeun. His pheromone deficiency complicates things, and the pregnancy is putting extra strain on his body. We’ll do everything we can to make sure both he and the baby are safe."
Yeongsoo exhaled slowly, nodding again. He turned his gaze back to Haeun, watching the slow rise and fall of his chest. The weight of yesterday’s events pressed on him, but the relief of knowing Haeun was on the mend allowed him to breathe a little easier.
"I’ll be here," he murmured, more to himself than to Dr. Choi.
Dr. Choi smiled gently, patting his shoulder. "You’re a good partner, Sir. He’s lucky to have you." With that, he left the room quietly, leaving Yeongsoo once again alone with Haeun.
Yeongsoo smiled bitterly "I’m the one who’s lucky to have him.." if he had controlled himself that day, Haeun wound the suffering like this.
