Chapter 53: A gangster with government authority

Haeun picked up a fork and carefully cut a slice of the creamy cheesecake, the texture looking so inviting. As he took a bite, a small moan escaped his lips at the delightful taste. "Wow," he murmured, his eyes lighting up. "This is amazing."

He looked back at Yeongsoo, who was focused on the stack of documents, his pen moving rapidly as he filled out details and signed where necessary. Haeun couldn’t help but admire how diligent he was, but the sight of him hunched over the paperwork made Haeun feel a little guilty.

"Yeongsoo," Haeun called softly, but he barely looked up, too engrossed in his tasks. Haeun took a deep breath, thinking of a way to get his attention.

With a nod, he walked over, with a slice of cheesecake in hand, and leaned over Yeongsoo’s desk. "Hey, hard worker," he said, a mischievous grin forming. "How about a treat?"

Yeongsoo finally lifted his gaze, momentarily distracted by the slice of cheesecake hovering in front of him. He raised an eyebrow, a smirk creeping onto his face. "What do you think you’re doing?"

"I’m offering you some cheesecake, Mr. President. You look like you need a break," Haeun replied, doing his best to sound serious while trying not to laugh at the ridiculousness of the situation.

"I don’t have time for dessert," Yeongsoo replied, but there was a playful glint in his eyes.

"C’mon, just one bite," Haeun urged, leaning closer, almost teasingly. "I promise it’ll be worth sir"

Yeongsoo’s resolve cracked immediately as he leaned back in his chair, an amused smile breaking through his serious facade. "Fine, just this once."

With a triumphant smile, Haeun carefully brought the fork to Yeongsoo’s mouth, only to have him turn his head slightly, pretending to look away.

"Yeongsoo!" Haeun lips twitched, harshly swatting at his arm. "Can you stop playing hard to get! It’s just a fucking slice of cheesecake"

"Ouch! Sorry madam but I can’t help it. You’re the one who looks like a madman trying to feed me," he retorted, his eyes sparkling with humor.

"Just open your fucking mouth already!" Haeun insisted, trying to keep the tone light.

Finally relenting, Yeongsoo opened his mouth, and Haeun carefully slipped the bite of cheesecake in. Yeongsoo chewed thoughtfully, eyes closing in delight as he savored the flavor. "Okay, okay, that’s really good," he admitted, licking his lips.

Yeongsoo tried to refute the next slice, but the hard glare Haeun sent him was enough for him to obediently finish the slice before heading back to his work.

Haeun happily returned to the couch, guilt-free—he could not finally enjoy his meal in peace.

Although it didn’t take him long for him to lose his appetite, laying on the couch he turned to Yeongsoo "I can’t finish it, can we take it home?"

"..."

"You want to take everything home?" Yeongsoo asked, now raising his head from his paperwork.

"Not everything, just my favorites and more of those cheesecakes. The rest can be shared among the employees.."

After a pause Yeongsoo replied, "Alright darling, well do whatever you want.."

Haeun didn’t say anything and stared at the ceiling, didn’t Yeongsoo say he was just a gangster? So where did this hotel come to play??

"Yeongsoo? Didn’t you say you inherited the dark business of your family, but how come you’re still running a business??"

Haeun bit his lips, wishing he could swallow his words back, why couldn’t Yeongsoo run a business, gangsters need money too.

Yeongsoo chuckled and set the file down, he dropped the pen and leaned against the chair.

"My older brother inherited the company, Cheon Technology, my second brother got married and lives abroad and I’m left with a gang, irony right? But that wasn’t enough, so I started Red Phoenix as a way to sustain myself and opened its sister hotel Black Rose a year later. I’ve been running it along side Sean who’s my partner and also a shareholder.."

Haeun nodded but the other side of the job, required Yeongsoo to kill, didn’t he mind the blood on his hands?

"Gang members only trust gang members because they believe they’re all doomed, I’m no different but I have some special privileges, I can kill without a penalty..."

"...!"

Haeun immediately sat up, how was that even possible??

"You’re kidding?!"

Yeongsoo stood up, wanting to stretch his legs and walked to the couch.

"I’m not, after being a gangster my secondary role is a spy, I go on missions, collect intels about other countries, figures and people of high rankings and give them to our government, in exchange that i don’t get a penalty for whosoever I kill.."

"...!!!"

Haeun felt his brain freeze, so was Yeongsoo trying to tell him that the government had given him permission to kill.

"Yeongsoo..."Haeun muttered as Yeongsoo picked up a piece of sliced apple.

"Mhm?" He answered as he munched on the apple, taking another one when he was done.

"Are you saying the government gave you permission to kill?"

"Not exactly.." Yeongsoo replied wiping his hands. "We are still under law, if we kill without context or authorization we will be subjected to the law, however when it comes to protecting the government interest, self defense and confidentiality intel which the victim will likely use as a way to escape being caught or tried to leak out or sell these information we are then authorized to kill."

"We also have to get info from other countries as well. We are given special badges to show we are still under the law. Minor killings that happen in my gang can be overlooked, since in a way they also work for government. I use my gang to keep the other gangs in check and minimize the crime rate.."

Haeun frowned, Yeongsoo wasn’t just a simple gangster, he had government authority.

Yeongsoo stared down at the Haeun, he had expected multiple reactions from Haeun but seeing him silent making him feel anxious. Was he going to leave him now that he had found out his actual job?

"Will you leave me when you go on your missions?"

"..." Yeongsoo was dumbfounded he wasn’t expecting those words from Haeun but he smiled. After spending a while with Haeun he could understand most of his thought process.

"Sean does more of the fieldwork, I’m more of a backstage man. Hacking, tracking, my team finds out whatever is hidden out of sight for Sean and his team to find the intel were looking for quickly.."
