Chapter 27: I didn’t even get to eat
After paying for the baby clothes and essentials, Haeun and Yeongsoo made their way out of the mall. The sun was high in the sky, and the bustle of the weekend crowd spilled out into the parking lot.
Yeongsoo glanced over at Haeun, his gaze softening. "You must be hungry after all that shopping. How about we find a cozy spot for lunch?"
Haeun nodded, feeling his stomach rumble in agreement. "Sounds good. I could definitely eat."
As they walked to the car, Haeun was oblivious to the subtle presence of another vehicle a short distance behind them. It was packed with a few of Yeongsoo’s men, quietly keeping their boss in sight. Only Yeongsoo was aware of them, but he didn’t mention it. His protective instincts had kicked in after the earlier incident in the store, and he wasn’t taking any chances.
They drove through the city for a while before stopping at a quaint, cozy restaurant tucked away in a quiet corner. It had a small outdoor patio, shaded by trees, perfect for a peaceful meal away from the crowds.
"This place looks nice," Haeun said as they walked in, taking in the relaxed atmosphere.
"Yeah," Yeongsoo agreed, though his eyes occasionally flickered to the streets, subtly scanning for any signs of danger. He didn’t see any immediate threats, but he remained cautious.
They were seated outside, and a gentle breeze ruffled Haeun’s hair as they looked over the menu. After placing their orders—Haeun opting for a light pasta dish and Yeongsoo choosing a steak—their conversation shifted back to the day’s events.
"I think we bought half the store," Haeun chuckled, shaking his head at the sheer amount of bags they had packed into the car.
"It’s a good start," Yeongsoo teased, leaning back in his chair. "You’ll need more."
"You really think I need all that? I’m only going to be staying with you for a few months," Haeun said with a smile, though he couldn’t help but feel the weight of those words.
"For now," Yeongsoo corrected, his eyes darkening for a moment. "But I want you to be comfortable, no matter how long you stay."
Haeun sighed, as long as Yeongsoo possessiveness wasn’t restricting him, he would ignore it.
"Here’s your meal sirs.."
The waiter smiled as he placed the food on the table one by one.
"Thank you.."
Haeun smiled, he had been feeling hungry since they got the baby section and now it was finally time to eat.
As soon as Haeun took his first bite of the pasta, his stomach turned. A wave of nausea hit him so suddenly that he barely had time to set down his fork before bolting up from the table. His hand flew to his mouth, his face paling as he rushed toward the bathroom.
"Haeun?" Yeongsoo called out, already rising from his seat, concern etched into his face. He quickly followed after him as he head to the bathroom.
Haeun barely made it to the bathroom before he began to retch. His body heaved, and he leaned over the sink, his breath ragged as he emptied his stomach. The taste of bile lingered in his mouth, his throat feeling raw from the effort.
Seconds later, the bathroom door creaked open, and Yeongsoo appeared by his side. Without a word, he grabbed some paper towels, wetted them under the faucet, and gently wiped Haeun’s mouth. His hands were steady and firm, yet there was an undeniable tenderness in his touch as he cleaned him up.
"It’s okay. Take it slow," Yeongsoo murmured, his voice calm as he supported Haeun by the shoulders. Haeun, still shaky, closed his eyes and tried to regulate his breathing.
"I hate this..." Haeun rasped, leaning his weight into Yeongsoo. "I didn’t expect it to be this bad..."
Yeongsoo, without hesitation, slipped his arms under Haeun and lifted him effortlessly. "I’ve got you," he said softly, carrying him out of the bathroom. Haeun didn’t protest, too exhausted from the sudden round of nausea to resist.
As they made their way back through the restaurant, a few curious glances were thrown their way, but no one dared to say anything. When they reached the counter, Yeongsoo managed to pay the bill with one hand, cradling Haeun securely in his other arm the entire time.
Once they got outside, the fresh air hit them, and Haeun took a deep breath, grateful to be out of the stuffy restaurant. He felt slightly better but was still a bit lightheaded, his body still recovering from the nausea.
Yeongsoo gently lowered him into the passenger seat of the car, making sure he was comfortable before walking around to get in the driver’s seat. His jaw clenched as he glanced at Haeun, who was slumped against the seat, eyes half-closed.
"Do you need to go to the hospital?" he asked, his voice filled with genuine worry.
Haeun shook his head weakly. "No... it’s just the pregnancy. Morning sickness, I guess... even though it’s not morning."
Still, Yeongsoo’s expression remained tense. "You need to rest. We’ll go straight home."
Haeun nodded, closing his eyes as he leaned his head against the window. Feeling drained, but there was comfort in knowing that, despite everything, Yeongsoo was there.
Yeongsoo drove in silence, the tension in his grip on the wheel betraying his concern. He occasionally glanced over at Haeun, whose eyes were closed as he rested against the cool glass of the window. The soft hum of the car was the only sound, and though the city buzzed outside, it felt distant, muted.
After a while, they pulled up in front of Yeongsoo’s apartment. Without a word, he got out and walked around to the passenger side, opening the door carefully. Haeun stirred as Yeongsoo gently helped him out of the car.
"I can walk," Haeun muttered, though his voice was weak.
"I know," Yeongsoo replied, his tone softer than usual. "But let me help."
Haeun, too tired to argue, leaned into him for support as they entered the building. When they reached the apartment, Yeongsoo immediately guided him to the couch. He brought over a glass of water, holding it out for Haeun to take.
"Drink a little, it’ll help."
Haeun took a small sip, grateful for the cool liquid, and leaned back against the cushions. His head was spinning less now, but he still felt shaky. "I’m sorry," he murmured, glancing up at Yeongsoo with a faint, apologetic smile.
"For what?" Yeongsoo asked, frowning as he sat down beside him. "You don’t need to apologize for anything, Haeun."
"For ruining lunch. I didn’t even get to eat..." Haeun sighed, closing his eyes.
Yeongsoo’s lips quirked up slightly, though the concern in his eyes didn’t wane. "We’ll eat when you’re feeling better. Right now, I just need you to rest."
Haeun nodded, his eyelids fluttering shut. He could feel his body giving in to the exhaustion, and despite the whirlwind of emotions and nausea earlier, he found himself relaxing, knowing that he was safe here.
"You’re always taking care of me," Haeun mumbled, his voice barely audible as sleep began to pull him under.
