Chapter 95: Chapter 95: UNREQUITED LOVE

She looked at Tiana lingeringly, her maternal love visible even for Dave. He couldn’t help but feel envious for a moment before resolution appeared in his gaze.

Once the kids were gone, he looked at her and suddenly asked, "Briar, are you feeling well now?" concern laced in his tone.

When she heard that, Briar was forced to stop looking at her child to face Dave, who had been quite close to her for some time now.

She smiled at him with a reassuring smile as she answered, "I am much better. Thank you for worrying."

Dave once again heaved a sigh of relief but felt a pang when his gaze paused for a moment on her head. She used to have long hair and after not seeing her for nearly two months; the hair was gone. He could see the stitch line which went into her head.

Whatever she experienced, it was very serious. His heart ached.

"That’s good." ’what really happened to you?’ he wanted to ask but couldn’t say it out loud.

With her being part of a rich family, wouldn’t he be opening her wounds? So, he could only hold back and didn’t utter a single thing.

Briar inwardly sighed with relief when she saw that he didn’t pursue the matter and smiled politely at Dave, ready to say her farewell but Dave beat her to it as he asked, "Briar, are you perhaps free whether today or another day?" his voice laced with nervousness.

When he asked that, something exploded in her as it dawned on her.

’Could this guy like me?’ she found it quite interesting. However, she didn’t dare conclude anything. So, she shook her head softly and responded, "Unfortunately, I have appointments. Was there something that you needed?"

When Dave heard that, he felt sullen all of a sudden. However, he couldn’t expose himself. So, she misled wryly as he answered her, "It wasn’t anything serious. Just wanted to have a cup of coffee and talk about the children like we used to," hoping that this would make her change her mind.

Unfortunately, Briar couldn’t fall for such a trick.

She politely turned him down, and before he could say anything, her phone rang.

When she saw the caller ID, her face lit up, and the way her eyes sparkled and oozed with affection, Dave felt receiving a huge blow. Suddenly, he felt as if he had been slapped.

Briar looked at Dave apologetically and said, "I am afraid that I need to go. See you some other time," and without waiting for his response, she started walking away, answering the call.

Dave, who had been ditched on the spot, looked longingly at her, wondering who had called her, but when he heard her answering coquettishly, "Hubby!" the blow he received was much more hurtful than the first one.

’Haha, so she is taken! I am a fool!’ he felt like crying as he watched the limo going.

Who was it who took her when he had known her for a long time?

Why did he take so long? If only he hadn’t been a coward, maybe she would be his.

Dave, like a zombie, staggered back to the car, his expression gloomy and scaring some kids who were on their way to school.

What he didn’t know was that standing behind a certain pole, a woman was watching with a cold smile on her face.

After entering his car, Dave took several deep breaths as he tried to calm himself down.

What if ... he didn’t want to believe it straightaway that she could be just gone like that? But what if?

That uncertainty made him feel unsettled.

Ring. Ring. Ring.

As he sat there, lost in thoughts, his phone started ringing, jolting him out of his reverie.

Dave fished his phone out of the pocket and when he saw the caller, he frowned as his eyes narrowed.

’What does she want?’ he couldn’t help but wonder.

Nonetheless, he still answered the phone after a momentary pause.

"What do you want?" he asked coldly, not even trying to pretend to be like this unexpected call.

On the other side of the road, the woman who had been staring at Dave and Briar moments prior held the phone in her hand tightly, gritting her teeth as the cold voice rang in her ears.

"Can’t I just call you?" she asked angrily, as her eyes reddened.

He was so nice when he was with Briar, and yet with her. He was this cold.

[Tche. Who are you trying to fool? Tell me what you want and stop bothering me!]

The woman clenched her fist as Dave ruthlessly responded and it triggered her that she had mildly exploded. "Dave, I was once your wife and you are raising our child. Can’t I just ask how she is doing and all that? Why are you treating me like that?"

[I should be asking you the same, Chloe. You are the one who left us, clamored for the damn divorce and left us with nothing. And now you call from nowhere and just want to talk. Do I look like a fool to you? If you really cared about Kelly, you should have done your part as a mother. Even if you didn’t love me, you should have not let Kelly down the way you did.]

"You _"

[It’s been two years. Two years since she saw you. You don’t just barge in and make it look easy!]

Chloe was so angered as she felt that Dave was channeling his anger towards her. She didn’t know what Briar said to him for him to act like that, but whatever it was, she felt like she was suffering from a crime she didn’t commit.

Knowing that she would only get more infuriated by Dave’s words if she continued, she could only respond to him this way, "I don’t know what kind of drugs you are on, but let’s meet. We can talk face to face. In fact, don’t bother. I am looking at you right now. Let’s find a place to have some coffee and talk it out."

Before he could respond, she had hung up and was making her way towards his car.

Whatever outbursts would come, she was going to face it.

Who said that villains don’t repent?

***

Briar had no idea about Dave’s thoughts or his conversation with his ex-wife, the woman she had always been curious about.

All she was thinking about was her husband, who had called her. As for Dave, who was he?

She was on the call for five minutes and Logan just called to check whether she had dropped the kids and if she would be coming over at lunch.

Briar was going to meet her friends, so she wouldn’t be going to see Logan.

After the call, she happily hummed a song and ate some snacks from the car. Because of being shy in the morning, she couldn’t eat her breakfast properly. And now that the kids were sent off, she was in the mood to eat again.

An hour later, the driver dropped her at the café she was meeting with Bertha.

After seeing her entering the café, the driver left and didn’t forget to report to Logan about the drop-off.

Briar didn’t really care if Logan monitored her or not. As long as she didn’t want to be seen, he wouldn’t be able to.

Briar spotted Bertha as soon as she entered the café. She smiled brightly at the other, and Bertha waved her hands at her.

Briar walked towards Bertha, feeling very excited. This was the first time that she had met her friend in public without the need to hide.

Even if Logan sees her or knows of her meetings with Bertha from now on, he wouldn’t suspect anything and simply assume that she was making friends and all that.

"And here I thought you weren’t going to come!" Bertha teasingly said as she looked at Briar, who looked stunning despite the simplicity.

Briar stuck her tongue playfully at Bertha as she took her seat and said, "How can I not come? I have missed you so much!" her tone laced with shamelessness.

Bertha helplessly shook her head as she looked at Briar, who now looked much better, or perhaps happier, than before. After knowing each other for years, they knew at least what should be known about each other.

The whole group knew about Briar’s unrequited love for Logan, and she was quite depressed about the matter for years. Now that she finally found her love, she was happy, obviously.

With the arrival of Briar, there was no need to stay for a long time at the café. After buying a slice of cake and iced tea, the two of them left the café and walked to the parking lot where Bertha’s car was parked.

The two friends boarded the car, and it drove off, heading towards the real destination where they would be gathering.

On their way to the place, the two of them were busy chatting merrily or rather, Briar was busy listening to Bertha as she told her about the juicy news which had been happening all this time when she wasn’t available.

Thirty minutes later, the car drove through a gated complex and several minutes later, the two were smiling brightly as they spread their arms towards the two people who were in front of them.

"George! Irene!" Briar happily called her two other friends.

The two in question were also taking large strides towards her, smiles on their faces, very happy to see the person they hadn’t seen in ages.
