Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Seeing a Ghost

Regarding her words, Xiao Yebai slowly turned toward her, grinning as if he truly understood her.

Gu Nuan, noticing a seemingly unaware stranger nearby, had no choice but to play along and also pursed her lips in a slight smile, as if nothing had happened.

The man watching the two of them flashed a hint of confusion in his eyes.

Xiao Yebai coughed while covering his mouth, and finally introduced his companion to her, saying, "He is the fourth, you can call him Pengpeng."

A man with thick eyebrows and big eyes, probably only such a sharp-tongued and reckless scion would casually give such an incredibly childish nickname that made one immediately want to burst into laughter.

Gu Nuan suddenly felt that anyone who associated with this sharp-tongued man would be pitiable.

Sure enough, as Zhan Dapeng heard Xiao Yebai introduce him by his nickname in front of Gu Nuan, his pride as a big man seemed to falter, and he complained with a frown, "Second Brother, you can’t just forget about us brothers after marrying a beautiful wife—"

However, his grievances and complaints seemed unable to stop the sharp-tongued scion from speaking.

"Did I forget about you?" Xiao Yebai raised his eyebrows at him, "Haven’t you always been called Pengpeng?"

The latter phrase was like, not enough with one punch, hitting with another right away.

Zhan Dapeng was defeated and dared not speak further.

Gu Nuan only noticed one thing, Zhan Dapeng was physically bulkier than Xiao Yebai, yet he clearly held a sense of awe towards him.

Was it because one looked like a boss while the other simply looked like a worker?

It did not seem like Zhan Dapeng was truly angry with Xiao Yebai, showing the genuine brotherly affection between them. He stood up and gave Gu Nuan a semi-bow. Just like Zang Xiaolian, his demeanor towards her was entirely respectful, clearly out of respect for Xiao Yebai.

"Sister-in-law, my full name is Zhan Dapeng," Zhan Dapeng formally introduced himself.

Gu Nuan politely responded, "Mr. Zhan, it’s an honor to meet you."

Unexpectedly, these words caused the man beside her to look sideways at her.

"You didn’t say that when we first met," Xiao Yebai said, his tone resembling that of a child grumbling about being treated differently by his parents.

Gu Nuan thought, doesn’t he care about the occasion?

Besides, she didn’t even know what he was complaining about.

"Did I say anything?" Gu Nuan asked calmly.

"Are you happy to meet him but not happy to meet me?" Xiao Yebai pointed it out upon hearing her question, his tone somewhat accusatory.

Talk about childish—what were the circumstances of their initial meeting, and what kind of environment and mood were they in now?

Gu Nuan realized that she not only needed to get used to, but also, had to learn how to deal with this completely unconventional pretend husband.

Seeing that, on the other side, Zhan Dapeng was showing a doubtful expression regarding their conversation.

"Doesn’t Mr. Xiao understand? Casual remarks are only for those close to you," Gu Nuan said after a moment’s thought.

Xiao Yebai looked at her, and as he looked, his mouth formed a curved line.

Zhan Dapeng also smiled from across them, saying, "Sister-in-law is eloquent. Not many can retort Second Brother’s words like that."

"That’s only natural, or how else would you be able to call yourself my sister-in-law?" Xiao Yebai said, his eyebrows lifting in triumph.

Gu Nuan only noticed that the hand he had placed on her shoulder was finally withdrawn.

For some reason, when he was clutching her arm, the touch had made her feel strange. She had never felt this when holding hands with Wa Zicong before.

Was it because she was too familiar with Wa Zicong as a classmate, to the point there was no sense of repulsion you’d normally feel with the opposite sex? Gu Nuan pondered for a moment but couldn’t figure it out, so she simply stopped thinking about it. After all, their fake marriage needed to continue for now. She would probably have to gradually get used to this.

At that moment, Zang Xiaolian came in with a waiter, who placed three dishes and a soup on the table.

There was carp soup, pineapple fried chicken, a cold tofu dish, and a mixed platter.

Gu Nuan didn’t really care what she ate, seeing that he had ordered ordinary home-cooked dishes, she actually felt relieved.

While eating, she noticed they were talking among themselves. By then, Zang Xiaolian had also sat down and was having a business set meal provided by the hotel.

The three of them seemed to be discussing business matters and didn’t seem to have any reservations talking about it in front of her, probably thinking she wouldn’t understand.

Gu Nuan felt she indeed couldn’t understand, as their conversation was disjointed, without tails or heads, and they offered no explanations to her.

Zhan Dapeng finally finished the large plate of lamb fried rice in front of him, let out a long, satisfied burp, poured himself some tea, and filled the cups for everyone else as well.

After making a round with the teapot and setting it down, he whispered to Xiao Yebai, "I went to see that engineering project, stayed there for three days and two nights, just waiting like guarding for a rabbit."

Staying out for three days and two nights to keep watch and catch thieves was why Zhan Dapeng looked as ravenous as a starved ghost.

"Did you catch anyone?" Xiao Yebai asked.

"Caught one. Just waiting for the report to come out, then I’ll take it to the company."

"Since you’re prepared to catch a thief, you can’t be without evidence as if presenting it in court."

"Don’t worry, big brother. That won’t be omitted."

Perhaps seeing her sitting alone, just listening to their conversation, Zhan Dapeng chipped in and asked her, "Sister-in-law, are you working full-time at home now?"

A fake marriage didn’t mean she had to be a housewife.

She didn’t need to ask for his opinion, Gu Nuan spoke up directly, "I’ve just graduated and am planning to start working."

"Oh—" Zhan Dapeng blinked, seemingly at a loss for how to respond to her answer.

Gu Nuan thought he was probably cautious not to say something offhand, considering Xiao Yebai. These people must be working at some company, reasonably at his family’s company.

Normally, his family owning a company could offer her a direct position there, but taking such a backdoor route, irrespective of whether he was willing or not, she, Gu Nuan, was absolutely unwilling.

Entering any place through the backdoor would only lead to people quietly pointing fingers and saying, "This person didn’t get in through their own abilities."

This was something Gu Nuan detested most.

After finishing her meal, Gu Nuan went to the restroom.

She had to pass by the elevator on the way. Just then, "ding dong" - the elevator doors opened.

Gu Nuan and the person inside the elevator inadvertently faced each other. Just then, she heard Wa’s mom suddenly mutter, "Ghost sighted!"
