Chapter 345: Chapter 345: The Second Meeting with Father-in-Law (3)
Zang Xiaolian scraped the rice grains around his mouth and nodded vigorously. He couldn’t produce the kind of well-reasoned and well-founded argument that Zhan Dapeng could, so he could only express himself through actions.
Indeed, when it came to sophisticated dishes, Gu Nuan definitely was clueless. She hadn’t received any formal hotel-style chef training, nor was she a Michelin-starred chef. What she could do was take the basics she learned from her mother and then add a bit of her own understanding and special touch to create homemade dishes.
The person who had helped her develop this unique culinary skill was, in fact, Gu Sheng.
Her younger brother, Gu Sheng, was a very picky child. He often didn’t like the food their mother made when she was busy. However, Gu Sheng wouldn’t directly say that their mother’s food was bad; he would just quietly eat less and then struggle to swallow it down, feeling aggrieved.
Their mother failed to notice this.
When their mother wasn’t around, Gu Sheng would often give his sister a hard time.
It wasn’t that her brother was envious of the rich and despised the poor, demanding exotic delicacies. What Gu Sheng wanted was simply dishes that were good with rice.
A dish that goes well with rice must have a strong flavor, be fragrant enough, spicy enough. A simple taste was rather monotonous and not satisfactory. Ideally, it should be a mix of fragrance and spice, a combination of various textures assaulting both the sense of smell and taste, making it irresistible.
Gu Nuan had pondered for a long time to come up with a set of dishes that wouldn’t use too many seasonings to obscure the natural flavors of the ingredients, yet would completely remove any gamey taste, turning them into a delightful blend of spicy, salty, sweet, and fragrant—a perfect accompaniment for rice.
Take scrambled eggs with tomato, for instance. Not many people would prepare it in a semi-soup form like Gu Nuan did, allowing it to be poured over rice to make tomato rice.
As for the soup, since the dishes were already rich in flavor, Gu Nuan adopted a different approach: clear soup, to neutralize the intense taste in the mouth, making it feel refreshing and prompting one to drink more in one go.
The three men, after devouring three bowls of rice each and sweeping through five dishes and a large pot of soup, felt like fighter jets that had just gone on a fierce raid. They were full but hadn’t caught their breath yet, yearning for another big meal.
As Gu Nuan got up to leave and went to the fridge to find them some dessert, Zhan Dapeng whispered to the other two, "My sister-in-law’s cooking skills are actually good enough to open a restaurant at home."
"Hmm," Xiao Yebai nodded, "If she opens a restaurant, it can only be at home, just for me to eat."
The other two men: ...
At that moment, Gu Sheng’s mother’s phone call came in.
Gu Nuan answered it.
"Your aunt said you were looking for me? I just went to wash my hair and do laundry," Gu Sheng’s mother told her daughter.
Gu Nuan thought her mother’s explanation was a bit superfluous and made her suspicious, so she smiled and asked, "Mom, when did you get to Auntie’s place?"
"That Minister Zhan dropped me off near Auntie’s residential area. I got off the bus and walked there. Auntie was home, she had come back early," Gu Sheng’s mother explained, "But then I thought it was a bit early, so I lay down on the bed and fell asleep this afternoon. Why? It looks like you’re not at his house?"
Gu Sheng’s mother had sharp eyes; she noticed something was off just by looking at the video.
Gu Nuan said, "Yes, tonight neither Yebai nor I stayed at his house to eat."
At this point, Gu Sheng’s mother understood what was going on. With a soft sigh, she said, "If I had known it would come to this. But, I think he’s quite sincere, and doesn’t seem like someone who would wrong you, otherwise he wouldn’t have registered the marriage with you first. If he truly cares for you, give it another look—"
