Chapter 23: Chapter 23 Familiar Face (2)
Gu’s mother only knew that it was all because her daughter suddenly became deaf. If it had been before, when Gu Nuan’s ears weren’t deaf, she had also been recognized as an exemplary class cadre at school. Every time she thought of this, Gu’s mother’s heart ached and hurt.
In the year her daughter was in middle school, how her ears suddenly became deaf was something Gu’s mother still couldn’t understand to this day.
Therefore, Gu Nuan hadn’t been born deaf nor, like many others, had she become deaf due to taking antibiotics when her immune system was not yet fully developed as a child; she just became inexplicably deaf at the age of thirteen or fourteen. Precisely because of this, Gu Nuan was different from the average deaf person; she had no major problems with writing and studying.
Su Yixia would arrive by train tomorrow afternoon, going to the Gu Family’s after transferring to a bus heading to the county center. She was expected to arrive around four or five o’clock.
After getting up in the morning, Gu Nuan tidied up her bedroom again so that Su Yixia could sleep in the same room with her when she came because the Gu family’s house didn’t have that much space, lacking a separate guest room.
Knowing that a guest was coming to the house, Gu’s mother went to the vegetable market in the afternoon to buy some food to add dishes for the evening meal. Gu’s father, meanwhile, slipped off to his friend’s house to play mahjong.
Gu Nuan rode the family’s bicycle to go pick up the guest at the bus terminal.
When Su Yixia arrived, she was carrying a backpack. From afar, seeing Gu Nuan standing there with a bicycle, her face bloomed into a smile, and she approached to meet her.
Along the way, Gu Nu couldn’t count how many people were staring at Su Yixia. To tell the truth, Su Yixia was beautiful. During their time in college, she had been voted the most beautiful girl in their department.
Compared to Gu Nuan’s rustic ponytail, Su Yixia’s hair was fashionably permed into a Korean-style princess cut, and she was wearing a green floral dress with a pair of white canvas shoes. Just one glance at her suggested she was at least slightly bohemian.
Gu Nuan noticed the sweat on her forehead and said, "Are you thirsty? I brought water."
"They had water on the bus, but I saw a brand I’d never seen before." Su Yixia shrugged her attractive shoulders, "I don’t know if it’s tap water mixed in by some factory."
Gu Nuan laughed at her words, "Yeah, you mean to say you’ve been led astray by your brother."
Su Yixia had a brother named Su Yide, who was about three years older than her and a doctor, now working in a big hospital. Doctors tend to be germophobic, and Su Yide was no exception.
Gu Nuan handed over the water bottle she’d brought: "My mom’s lotus leaf water."
"Thanks," Su Yixia replied, unscrewing the cap without pretense and taking a big gulp.
The two of them walked to the Gu Family’s home together. It was obvious that Su Yixia couldn’t hide her worries and finally spilled them out, saying, "I was so angry at home because of my brother."
"What happened?" Gu Nuan asked.
"You know about my family’s finances, they’re really just middle class in the city. The company my parents run doesn’t make a lot of money. My brother wants to buy a house outright, and I told him not to, but he wouldn’t listen. He must have been egged on by that future sister-in-law of mine. You know, Gu Nuan, a house now costs at least several million, and in a decent area, it can be nearly ten million. I can’t stand to see him wasting our parents’ money like that. Can you really be so extravagant when marrying a daughter-in-law?"
Again, the issue of buying a house came up. Gu Nuan thought. Houses had now become the number one concern and the top pain point for the Chinese people. Mention houses, and almost every family could end up with a broken relationship.
Just then, Gu’s mother suddenly sent a hurried text message to her daughter: Your grandfather back home is ill, and your father and I have to rush back there. No way around it, so you and your classmate will have to eat out tonight.
Su Yixia said that it was no problem, and so, Gu Nuan took her to a familiar food stall near her home for dinner.
Since it was still early, there weren’t many people in the food stall. When Gu Nuan and Su Yixia found a table to sit at, Su Yixia suddenly glanced in a direction behind her and whispered, "Don’t you think that person looks a bit familiar?"
