Chapter 107 - 107 93 A Conversation
Chapter 107: Chapter 93 A Conversation Chapter 107: Chapter 93 A Conversation In a pitch-black office, dozens of huge electronic screens were stacked together, forming an immensely wide wall. Each screen was divided into many smaller panels, these panels crowded together tightly, broadcasting simultaneously, constantly alternating, switching, appearing, and disappearing. They created a scene of such chaos that it verged on dizziness.
And at this moment, there was only one person watching these panels.
A woman.
She leaned back in the sofa in a comfortable posture as usual, with a book open and face-down next to her.
This book she always carried with her, for many years, as if she could never quite finish it.
Usually, she would flip through a few pages whenever she had a chance, because just watching these recorded screens of abnormal items could be boring.
But today, she found it a bit hard to continue reading.
Because she was contemplating something.
It was something that troubled her so much that she felt her current posture was a bit uncomfortable, yet she still placed her hands with the fingertips of both hands touching each other, forming a triangle beneath her nose, without moving her body.
The light from the countless panels shone on her face, casting it in a kaleidoscope of colors.
This was a woman in her thirties, quite ordinary-looking, but if there was something unique about her… it was that her hands were very beautiful.
After a long while, her brows suddenly furrowed. Then, she reached into the darkness beside her, and when her hand reappeared in the light, she was holding an old-fashioned telephone receiver.
The woman did not dial but directly put the receiver to her ear.
“Doot… doot… doot”
It took a long time for the call to be picked up.“What’s up?” The voice of an annoyed boy came from the other side, somewhat tinny, sounding overweight, and it was consistently accompanied by “smack smack” sounds as if he was always sucking on candy.
Through the handset, one could also hear many women constantly groaning not far off.
“You’re messing with those strange things again,” she frowned, expressing her distaste for the chubby boy’s bizarre proclivities, which was one of many reasons she didn’t like him.
“Just an experiment…” The other side muttered reluctantly, and as soon as his words ended, those moaning sounds suddenly stopped.
“What do you want?” the chubby boy asked.
The woman was silent for a second.
“You’re up to something,” she said abruptly, her tone vague, making it unclear whether it was a statement or a question.
The chubby boy didn’t reply, instead, he noisily stirred the candy in his mouth, making “click clack” sounds against his teeth that were especially irritating through thetelephone.
After a moment, he answered carelessly, “Yeah.”
Upon hearing this, the woman didn’t seem very angry; instead, she appeared to let out a sigh of relief.
That man named Chen Xiao, ever since he joined the Foundation, had been suppressed, whether it was in terms of mission bonuses or weapon allocation, especially the “Smile’s Gate” revolver. Ever since it had been manufactured decades ago, it was a joke among the weapons development division. How could a weapon as suicidal as that ever be issued to a “champion of elite gambits,” and, to top it off, this “champion” was so downtrodden that he couldn’t even afford a bottle of the lowest grade first aid medicine, which pretty much signaled to everyone, “I don’t want him alive.”
But fortunately, someone was doing this deliberately, otherwise, it’d be an even more terrifying matter.
Therefore, the woman relaxed and asked another seemingly nonsensical question, “Then… what about Dark Realm?”
…
As soon as her words fell, the voice on the other side went silent, even the stirring of the candy stopped.
After an exceedingly long second
…
“It wasn’t me, and if it wasn’t you either, then… I have a guess…” the little boy said.
The woman frowned again, because she knew what the little boy’s guess was.
If among the five of them, two people felt that such a possibility existed, then no matter how absurd the guess was, it should be taken seriously.
“I guess… he… no, they have seen her,” said the chubby one.
The woman took a deep breath, as if confirming something she had thought of long ago but had always been reluctant to admit.
“So you want to use that to your advantage?” she asked, smoothing out her tone.
The chubby one began to stir his sugar cubes again with a “clink clink” sound.
“You know, if we can find her, I’m willing to pay any price,” he said casually, as if discussing a very ordinary matter.
The woman’s face showed no emotion, but the hand holding the phone tightened slightly.
Indeed, the appearance of Dark Realm wasn’t a coincidence, but if those three guys really came together again, god knows what would happen.
Every deal needs a bargaining chip, so how much longer could this sugar-loving chubby one’s chip last?
“What level do you plan to let him reach?” the woman asked indifferently.
“Whatever he wants, B-level, A-level, actually, I think with his abilities, he could even join Omega Squad. Anyway, I won’t hold him back anymore,” said the chubby one emotionlessly.
The woman hesitated for a moment.
“Do we need a meeting?”
She uttered these words.
On the phone, the chubby one “crunched,” biting down on a sugar cube. “If you don’t say anything and I don’t say anything, do you think those three idiots will find out about this?”
The woman sighed, finding the act of pulling someone on board too rough, yet she was unable to refuse.
So, all she could do was close her eyes and slowly exhale the air in her lungs, knowing that this might be the most wrong decision she had ever made.
Using a mistake to correct a mistake, that was the phrase she had used to berate others not long ago, and now she found herself doing the same thing.
…
…
The woman said nothing more and quietly hung up the phone.
Her fingertips came together, looking at the thousands of changing images in front of her, the light reflecting in her pupils, making them shine much brighter than before.
If those three had already met, when was it, what was the excessively clever “woman”‘s vessel, and most importantly, where was she hiding?
Of course, she wouldn’t be able to think of these questions, but fortunately, their bodies were in the safest place.
So, they would eventually meet again.
The woman thought.
…
…
Meanwhile, outside a hospital in the center of K city, police cars were scattered around.
A taxi stopped across the street, and a man wearing a mask got out. He pulled out his phone and confirmed the location marked on it.
“C-level, huh…” he muttered to himself.
Then he looked up at the hospital in front of him, his eyes revealing an excitement he couldn’t hide.
