Chapter 229: Chapter 180 Can’t Say It’s Not Human_2

Mute Uncle: "Don’t bother!"

Feng Yi continued driving up the mountain.

Unlike last year, there were no snakes to be seen on the railings on both sides. It was said that the management approach in this area had changed. A large batch of snakes from the reserve had been distributed somewhere else, and with the zone under new management, the scene of snakes swarming the protective nets didn’t happen.

The air had much less of a snake scent to it.

Upon closer sniffing, there was even a faint hint of rat odor.

No wonder some snakes had "escaped" to feed on the rats.

All the houses built halfway up the mountain had their doors closed, probably because the staff had gone home for the New Year. It was very quiet all around, eerily so.

When Feng Yi arrived at the summit, Mute Uncle was lounging on a recliner at the entrance of the ancestral house, leisurely playing with his phone.

Above the recliner was a sunshade, and beside it sat a wooden side table and tray, carrying fruits and other snacks.

Mute Uncle was busy with his phone.

Feng Yi noticed that the phone in Mute Uncle’s hand was different from last year’s; it was a new model released this year.

Mute Uncle’s fingers tapped across the screen, busily engaged in either chatting or playing a game. Hearing the commotion, he merely lifted his eyelids for a quick glance before returning his focus to the screen.

Feng Yi walked over and saw that the phone’s screen displayed a game in full swing.

Knowing Mute Uncle’s predilections, he didn’t speak up to disturb him.

But the game was nearing its end anyway, and soon, the screen flashed "Victory."

Mute Uncle switched screens and stood up.

Feng Yi handed over the gifts for the New Year’s visit. "Uncle, Happy New Year!"

Wine prepared by the butler and dishes cooked by Bing.

Mute Uncle’s eyes nearly squinted shut, evidently very pleased with these offerings.

Feng Yi glanced at the cars approaching along the mountain road not far away. "It’s my cousin and my second cousin."

Mute Uncle nodded indifferently.

Feng Yi then asked, "Can I go inside there today, to the other side of the wall?"

Mute Uncle typed on his phone, "No problem, go ahead."

With Mute Uncle’s permission, Feng Yi said no more. With the other two already approaching, to not go inside now would be even more troublesome.

Feng Yi stepped into the house, with Mute Uncle closing the main door behind him.

Looking back, as the door slowly shut, Mute Uncle sat on the steps at the entrance, like a diligent and committed guardian.

Feng Yi didn’t know what role Mute Uncle truly played. Mute Uncle knew the great-aunt as well as the butler and was privy to deeper secrets, but he always stayed here.

The butler had mentioned Mute Uncle was responsible for looking after the ancestral home, but Feng Yi felt Mute Uncle was more like a keeper, guarding the secrets within.

Feng Yi turned and continued on inward.

He had intended to go to the secret chamber first, but considering the two people outside, he instead entered the ancestral shrine to offer incense and set out the offerings first.

Feng Yi wasn’t familiar with these practices; the offerings were prepared by the butler. It wasn’t a major ceremonial activity, just some fruits and cakes. However, the butler also told Feng Yi that once the task was completed, the offerings would undoubtedly end up in Mute Uncle’s stomach.

After returning from this place last year, Feng Yi had deliberately looked up the names on those tablets, which indeed belonged to the Feng Family ancestors, including the place of his great-grandfather.

Yet, strangely, back at the Feng Family home, the old master had never mentioned this place to them, let alone any grand memorial ceremonies.

As the information collected grew, although Feng Yi still couldn’t deduce the detailed reasons, he speculated there might be some intractable conflicts between the generations of the old master, the great-aunt, and their forbears, and these conflicts were very likely related to the secrets Feng Yi had encountered.

If not by blood relation, dividing the Feng Family into two branches; one open to the public and able to face anyone in the world, such as the old master and the members of the Feng Family in Yang City.

The other branch, however, was more concealed, meant to remain hidden from the world. Like the great-aunt, like Feng Yi himself.

But why was this "non-human" branch so small, could there really only be one person per generation?

Few, yet shrouded in mystery.

Even the children and blood relatives of the great-aunt might not be privy to these secrets.

From what Feng Yi knew about the old master, who liked to control everything, it was clear that the old master was not part of the most secretive branch of the Feng Family, and he couldn’t access the core secrets.

Feng Yi arrived at another room with an inconspicuous wall where a secret compartment slid open and his finger rested on something resembling a fingerprint lock.

The door opened.

Last year, Mute Uncle had accompanied him here, but this time Feng Yi entered alone.

It seemed his identity had already been recorded here.

The room was the same as last time he entered, with the lights turning on automatically.

There wasn’t much in the room, just various patterns.

On the ground was a snake circle pattern biting its own tail; Feng Yi stepped into it.

Nothing happened.

Last year, a "family tree" had popped up!

Could it be that after completing the process, the "family tree" would no longer appear?

Feng Yi lightly stamped his foot on the ground.

Feeling the vibrations underfoot, Feng Yi was filled with amazement.

The ground beneath was solid, or at least solid within a short range.

Such "ancient technology" was truly astonishing!

Without the family tree emerging, this place was just a vacant chamber with odd snake patterns—anyone else coming in would have a hard time discovering the hidden secrets. Knocking around wouldn’t make any secret chambers appear.

Feng Yi remembered the strange "family tree" he saw last year.

In a sense, it was indeed a family tree.

After all, they were no longer human, so of course, a new book had to be written.

...But that wasn’t quite right!

It couldn’t be said that they were not human; rather, they were not ordinary people!
