Chapter 142: Chapter 116: No License is Better Than Having One_2
Now, with over a thousand dried python Snake Gallbladders, can that level of precision and efficiency still be achieved with such a large volume?
Manager Tao originally had an employee responsible for recording at the side but thought better of it and called over another employee, "You don’t need to record; assist at the side."
Since they were already connected, and the monitoring room’s camera was running, there was no need for a manual record, especially if Feng Yi could authenticate efficiently, as the employees might not be able to keep up with his speed.
Feng Yi approached the experiment table holding 1,251 dried Snake Gallbladders.
Most of the already authenticated Snake Gallbladders were cut open due to sampling and thus had notches.
However, this was no hindrance to Feng Yi; in fact, the smell from the cut ones was even stronger.
Of course, he could detect the differences even without cutting them open!
Sometimes, sixty to seventy percent of a snake’s value lies in its gallbladder.
Control is strict nowadays, but with market demand driving up the price of Snake Gallbladders, there are always those willing to risk smuggling for profit.
These thousand-plus Snake Gallbladders, although some were fake, the majority were real, and this might only be a fraction of the total. To have killed so many pythons under such tight controls, the amount involved in the case certainly ran into the billions—a major case indeed.
It seemed Captain Yuan and his team would be busy.
But that was the job for the investigators; Feng Yi was only responsible for what was before him.
With over 1,200 Snake Gallbladders, efficiency was certainly required—and he was getting paid to work very carefully. Moreover, Feng Yi valued this opportunity and was, of course, even more diligent.
In the first round, Feng Yi scanned and quickly picked out more than fifty, placing them into the container provided by the testing room and handed them to the lab worker beside him.
"All fake."
It took less than a minute, and that time was mostly spent picking out the Snake Gallbladders and placing them into the container.
Determining authenticity was a matter of a single glance.
Having already witnessed Feng Yi authenticate the Golden Coin Snake, the onlookers in the testing room were somewhat prepared and thus not overwhelmed with surprise.
In the second round, Feng Yi picked out over two hundred and handed them to the lab worker.
"Adulterated."
Adulterated meant that something else had been injected into the Snake Gallbladders.
After weeding these out, what remained on the table were all genuine Snake Gallbladders—and all of them were from pythons!
The scent of the Snake Gallbladders could tell Feng Yi much; odor molecules, analyzed through his olfactory system, could form a vague image in his mind, even including information about the snakes’ size and whether they were strong or weak when alive.
Feng Yi divided the remaining Snake Gallbladders into two groups, pointing to one, "Wild."
Then pointing to the other side, "Farmed."
An appraiser whispered to a colleague, "He can smell that?!"
In the laboratory, distinguishing between wild and farmed required measuring multiple data points, but Feng Yi could authenticate with just sight and smell!
Feng Yi ignored the thoughts of others and continued his authentication.
From the farmed batch, he picked out a Snake Gallbladder and placed it on an empty space on the table, then picked another and placed it not far from the first.
Then he picked out three batches of Snake Gallbladders and placed them underneath those two.
Pointing to the three batches below, Feng Yi stated, "Same father, same mother, full siblings."
The appraiser’s eyes went wide, "He can smell that?!"
Another colleague sighed softly, "This man’s unverified senses are better than verified credentials!"
Manager Tao had already taken an experimental record book and was writing something on it rapidly.
Feng Yi added, "Almost a third of these specimens had likely been stimulated before their gallbladders were removed."
A researcher transferred from the Medical Sciences Institute couldn’t help but ask, "Are you referring to something like ’oil gallbladders’?"
Realizing that others might not understand the term, the researcher explained, "Previously, some would stimulate live snakes with motor or diesel oil before taking their gallbladders, because the stress would increase bile production, though the quality was very poor. Nowadays, there seems to be other ways to stimulate them, perhaps giving better quality than ’oil gallbladders’ but definitely not as good as the original."
He was speaking entirely from the perspective of a medicinal researcher, explaining concepts like "oil gallbladder" and "raw gallbladder", which the people from the Consolidated Insurance Bureau might not enjoy hearing.
However, the medical researcher interested in medicinal materials didn’t notice the cold faces of the Consolidated Insurance Bureau staff, his eyes fervently fixed on Feng Yi.
Feng Yi paused and said, "I’m not sure about that, I can only smell that before the gallbladders were extracted, the snakes had been stressed or even poisoned."
The researcher clapped his hands, "That must be it!"
The researcher was about to say more when Manager Tao pulled him back, then gestured for Feng Yi to continue the identification.
Feng Yi quickly sorted out those from the bred batch with familial relationships, but he only separated parents and offspring. Any further and he was not certain, and even if he could be, he dared not show off, as that would be too much. Thus, he mostly grouped those with familial relationships together.
Even so, from these, it was evident whether the Snake Gallbladders came from the same breeder or different ones. Although he couldn’t judge with complete precision, he still provided important clues.
From the wild batch, Feng Yi picked out the Burmese python gallbladders. As for the rest, Feng Yi couldn’t determine their species, for his contact with pythons was limited, so he simply sorted them by species.
"The species I leave to you to identify."
Species could indeed be identified, but it required a series of measurements and analyses, followed by comparison against a database. Some gallbladder processing methods could even interfere with their analysis.
Captain Yuan’s voice came through the loudspeaker, "You can’t identify them because you’ve not encountered those pythons?"
"Correct."
"If you had samples, could you identify them based on the scent of the samples?"
"I’m not sure."
"Manager Tao, take him to the sample room."
In a conference room in a border city, more than a dozen case officers sat around a meeting table.
Displayed on the projection screen at the front of the table was the live feed from the Yang City branch of the Consolidated Insurance Bureau’s testing room.
Captain Yuan stood to the side, deep in thought, while the others were writing furiously.
When these people were summoned by Captain Yuan, they were perplexed by his choice. How could Feng Yi, a young man without even a certification for identification, be better than Manager Tao’s professional team?
But now, having seen the results identified by Feng Yi, there was little doubt remaining in their hearts. Whatever doubts lingered were waiting for Manager Tao’s team to confirm the findings with the laboratory’s technical methods.
Five minutes later.
Feng Yi returned from the sample room, matching the bred and wild gallbladders with their corresponding species.
With all the identification work completed, Captain Yuan, also eager to proceed with the investigation, told Feng Yi that if there were any further questions, he would ask for his help again, and then he hurried offline.
As for the payment, since Captain Yuan had already agreed to it, Feng Yi wouldn’t insist on it now; unlike commercial cooperation, this kind of thing had to go through the bureaucracy.
After completing the task, Feng Yi was about to take off his gloves and say goodbye when everyone in the testing room crowded around him.
"You are Feng Yi, right? I’m from the Medical Research Institute..."
"Do you have a business card? Contact information works too; my phone number is..."
"Let’s add each other as friends! We might collaborate in the future..."
...
Those engaged in identification work, having witnessed Feng Yi’s efficient methods, were not going to remain calm.
A specialized genius in the field of identification is hard to come by. Of course, they were enthusiastic!
After adding a bunch of friends, Feng Yi finally left the Yang City branch of the Consolidated Insurance Bureau. Manager Tao wanted to keep him for tea and offered to take him out for a meal, but Feng Yi declined. Manager Tao’s tea and meals were not that tempting.
Before leaving, Manager Tao said to Feng Yi, "There should be no big problem with your certification. If our team identifies the remaining Snake Gallbladders and the results match yours, you could directly take the fast track during your certification test."
The fast track for certification meant literally that; while others might have to go through several rounds of testing, slowly proving themselves, taking the fast track is more of a formality, certainly saving trouble and making things much easier.
In fact, even without the fast track, Feng Yi was confident in obtaining the certificate. The contacts he had added to his phone during this visit were far more valuable than any fast track!
Having thanked them, Feng Yi decided to take the subway back. He asked Jia to pick him up at the subway station closest to the Lu Hai Villa District.
He hadn’t taken the Yang City subway since university. It felt nostalgic. He wondered if any of the old stations had been renamed.
