Chapter 843: Chapter 0843: Exchange of Fire
Because the gang of robbers had just carjacked and kidnapped someone at the intersection, brandishing and firing those lethal weapons, Ye Qiu had to be cautious.
Besides, his brand-new Mercedes AMG wasn’t something he wanted scratched so easily.
The robbers ahead were driving a stolen police car, with Ye Qiu in hot pursuit, while Zhao Ruxue periodically updated the City Police Bureau on their location using her phone.
Given the current situation, the City Police Bureau and local officers had set up roadblocks to intercept them. The robbers in the police car seemed to have no chance of escaping.
Sure enough, as they neared the mountain ahead, the robbers stopped the police car, and eight individuals climbed out.
Among them, Ye Qiu recognized four as the bank robbers he had encountered before. The other four, whom he was seeing for the first time, were likely connected to a recent jewelry theft and were possibly mercenaries involved in the kidnapping.
"Ye Qiu, they’ve gotten out of the car!"
Ye Qiu didn’t rush forward immediately.
Zhao Ruxue was armed with only a standard-issue Type 92 pistol that had just six bullets left. Facing eight robbers with automatic rifles, they were clearly outmatched.
Zhao Ruxue understood that charging in recklessly was akin to a death sentence, but losing them wasn’t an option either.
"Ye Qiu, maybe I should go alone!"
She didn’t want Ye Qiu to take unnecessary risks.
Given that there was only one firearm between them, she felt his involvement would be exceedingly dangerous.
Ye Qiu said nothing. Even unarmed, he knew he could better ensure safety than Zhao Ruxue could.
As the robbers entered deeper into the mountain, putting more distance between themselves and their pursuers, Zhao Ruxue called the City Police Bureau again: "Reporting in, the robbers are moving into Qixia Mountain."
"Keep tailing them!"
Came the response from police headquarters.
Zhao Ruxue and Ye Qiu followed them into the mountain, only to discover that the robbers were extremely cunning—they started splitting up as they advanced further in.
These robbers were far too sly!
"What now?"
Initially, Ye Qiu intended to coordinate with Zhao Ruxue and capture the group in one fell swoop. But now, things looked more complicated.
However, Ye Qiu knew that with police surrounding the mountain and sealing off potential exits, escaping was no longer an option for the robbers.
Ye Qiu and Zhao Ruxue kept moving, eventually spotting three of the robbers. Although they seemed familiar with Qixia Mountain, the dense forest and underbrush meant their advantage was limited, despite their experience operating as mercenaries in Southeast Asia’s jungles.
Ye Qiu couldn’t understand why they’d enter here.
But as he and Zhao Ruxue got closer, one of the robbers—one of the bank robbers from before—spotted them. He immediately recognized them.
"Shit! You two again, ruining my plans!"
"Perfect timing!"
The robber turned and opened fire in their direction.
"Rat-a-tat-tat!"
The automatic rifle spewed bullets toward Ye Qiu and Zhao Ruxue. Though they dodged, rocks and tree branches around them exploded like shrapnel under the relentless gunfire.
"What now? Their firepower is overwhelming!"
Zhao Ruxue asked urgently.
With just the pistol in her hand, she had no chance to fire back.
Initially, Ye Qiu and Zhao Ruxue had been chasing the robbers, but now the situation had flipped—the three robbers turned to pursue them instead.
"We’ll have to evade them for now!"
From the current range, Ye Qiu couldn’t get a clear opening. He needed to close the distance first.
Zhao Ruxue darted forward but suddenly stepped into a hole, sending her sprawling painfully to the ground. Blood trickled from multiple cuts on her arm and thigh.
Ye Qiu pulled Zhao Ruxue up and helped her limp forward, while the three robbers laughed maniacally behind them, convinced the pair wouldn’t make it out alive this time.
As the trio pursued them with a vengeance, fueled by a desire to settle old scores, something strange happened—just like before. Suddenly, they clutched their chests in pain, their faces twisted in agony.
Their bodies began to weaken. One by one, their AK-47s and other automatic rifles clattered to the ground as their strength left them.
Ye Qiu turned to Zhao Ruxue and said, "Now’s our chance to subdue them!"
He took Zhao Ruxue’s pistol and fired at the robbers’ legs.
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
"Bang!"
The bullets hit each of their legs. Already overwhelmed by pain and fatigue, the shots left the three writhing in agony.
Zhao Ruxue was shocked. How had the situation taken such a sudden turn?
It dawned on her that Ye Qiu must have done something.
Approaching the downed robbers, Ye Qiu delivered a hefty kick to each of their chests, leaving them gasping for air. He then gathered up their rifles and tossed them to Zhao Ruxue, before stripping their clothes and tearing them into makeshift restraints. He bound their hands and feet tightly, ensuring they couldn’t move.
"Ye Qiu, should we just leave them here?"
"For now. We need to go after the other five robbers!"
Ye Qiu delivered a final kick to knock them unconscious. They wouldn’t wake up for hours.
Armed with the confiscated weapons, he led Zhao Ruxue forward. She gritted her teeth, enduring the pain from her earlier fall. Alongside her bleeding injuries, her ankle was now sprained.
"How are you holding up?"
"Ye Qiu, my right ankle’s sprained. It hurts a lot!"
Stopping to assess her injury, Ye Qiu noticed her ankle was swollen and red. He had treated her feet before—what were once calloused had become soft and fair skin. Now, scratches marred the surface from their chase through the forest.
He pressed his hand gently against the swollen area, and within two minutes, the redness, swelling, and scratches vanished as if they had never been there.
"The pain’s gone. Let’s catch up to the other robbers!"
Ye Qiu noticed Zhao Ruxue’s forehead, once darkened with impending misfortune, gradually return to its usual radiance. Her earlier fall seemed to have been her "calamity of bloodshed."
"What are you staring at? Hurry up!"
Zhao Ruxue snapped.
The pair continued forward. These mountain paths were uncharted.
Though Qixia Mountain was a famous attraction in Jinling, only parts of it had been developed. Most of it remained untouched. The faint trails they saw had clearly been left by the fleeing robbers.
