Chapter 65: An Upgrade

Chapter 65: Chapter 65: An Upgrade
“Oh my Goddess, you have to wear this one!” Mindie said, holding up a bubblegum pink dress that my mom had picked out for me.

I gave her a look, shook my head, and placed that awful dress in the back of my closet where it belonged.

It was the next evening, and we were in my room looking through my clothes to find an outfit for my date. As soon as I told Mindie that Axel Laken asked me out, she demanded to come over to help me get ready.

While shifting through the hangers in my closet, Mindie sighed dreamily.

“I still can’t believe Axel Laken asked you out. I looked him up online while I was in Geography class, and he is so hot.”

I sat on the edge of my bed and gave her a deadpan look. “Is looking up hot guys on the internet a good use of your class time?”

“Probably not,” she replied, airily waving her hand. “Anyway, Axel is not only super good-looking, but also such a talented artist.” She looked back at me. “Why aren’t you more excited? You should be jumping with joy right now. I’m not even the one going on the date, and I’m more excited than you.”

I wrung my hands and cleared my throat. “Yeah, um, I’m kinda nervous, to be honest,” I admitted. “What if we have nothing to talk about? What if Gareth finds out? I could lose my job or, even worse, he could hurt Axel.”

Mindie turned around, and her expression softened when she saw my wide eyes.

“Hey, stop overthinking this.” She came to sit on the bed next to me. “You’re going to have a great time. I promise.” She put a comforting arm around me. “A date with someone as handsome and successful as Axel is the perfect opportunity to get over Elliot. He is better than your ex-mate in every way. He’s a total upgrade!”

But her encouragement didn’t make me feel better.

“Why did he even ask me out in the first place? He’s a creative painter and future Alpha. And I’m just...me,” I said shyly. “I looked him up when I was on break at school, and I found out that he has painted pieces for werewolf royalty, which influenced an entirely new study of art that I once wrote an essay on!”

My heart raced as I began to freak myself out all over again. “I don’t even know that much about art, and he inspired werewolf royalty! What if we get to talking and he leaves the table halfway through dinner because he’s disappointed?”

Mindie smiled kindly and rubbed my arm.

“That’s not going to happen,” she said patiently. “Axel asked you out because he sees what everyone else sees in you. A kind, smart, and gorgeous woman. You won a scholarship because you’re the smartest person in our university. You have so much going for you, just like Axel. That’s why he asked you out.”

Mindie sprang from the bed and grabbed a little black dress off a hanger. “This dress is perfect. He’s going to be here soon, you have to get ready.”

I stared at the short, low-cut dress. “I bought that like a year ago on an impulse. Don’t you think it’s too revealing for a first date?”

“No, not at all,” she answered and smirked. “It will showcase your long legs and impressive cleavage.” She wiggled her eyebrows. “Show the girls off!”

That made me burst into laughter, and I relaxed just slightly.

“You can wear a jacket over the dress if you want,” Mindie suggested.

After a little more convincing, I caved. If I could trust anyone’s judgment about fashion, it was my best friend.

Quickly, I showered, shaved, and dried my hair.

But when I put the dress on and saw how much of my tanned legs and the tops of my breasts I was showing, I began to have second thoughts about Mindie’s outfit choice. Did this revealing dress give off the wrong impression? I wasn’t looking for one steamy night with Axel.

I didn’t have time to pick out another dress, though. I curled my long hair and put it up in a half-ponytail, finishing the look with a small white bow.

When I walked back into my room, Mindie whistled with delight.

“Wow! You look gorgeous!”

I blushed. “Thank you.”

Since I usually didn’t wear much makeup, Mindie helped me. My anxiety rose with every second.

Once my friend finished off my makeup, I spritzed on my favorite perfume that always reminded me of strawberries.

Mindie took me by the shoulders and made me face my full-length mirror. When I saw myself, my mouth dropped open.

I looked...beautiful.

Mindie had given me a smoky eye and red lips to go with my skimpy black dress. The look automatically gave me more confidence. I found myself standing straighter, and most of my nerves disappeared.

“I should trust you about fashion more often,” I admitted.

“That’s what I’ve been saying!” she said, and we laughed together.

“Thank you for staying with my mom while I’m on my date,” I told Mindie and squeezed her hand.

“Of course, girl. Anytime,” she answered. “You can repay me by living in the moment and not getting stuck in that pretty little head of yours during the date. Give Axel a chance. He might just end up surprising you.”

I nodded and chuckled, but then frowned when I thought of my mother, who was already asleep in her room despite the early hour.

“I‘ve been scared to leave her alone because things aren’t going great with the lawyers.”

“She can’t find anyone to help bail your dad out of prison?” Mindie asked.

I shook my head no and swallowed down my sadness. I didn’t want to end up crying and ruining all the work she’d done with my makeup.

“Each day that passes, she grows more depressed,” I whispered.

“Oh, Jasmine. I’m so sorry.” She gave me a tight hug.

Our moment was interrupted by my doorbell ringing.

My stomach swooped. “He’s here,” I whispered, turning to the door.

“Wait, your shoes!” Mindie handed me my strappy black heels.

After I shrugged on my white jacket, I was ready.

I let out a slow breath to try and calm my racing heart. When I opened the door, Axel’s eyes widened. A grin blossomed across his face as his gaze roamed over my body.

“You look amazing, Jasmine,” he muttered, seemingly shocked by my appearance.

“You do too,” I admitted.

Axel looked dashing in a fitted black suit and black undershirt. His brown hair was artfully messy, and his blue eyes glinted with excitement. Even in my high heels, my date was still at least a foot taller than me.

He offered me his arm, and I looped my arm through his. We walked to his sleek black car, and he opened the backseat door for me, making me blush.

In the car, Axel introduced me to Max, his future Beta.

“Nice to meet you, Jasmine.” Max grinned. His eyes were a vibrant shade of green, and his smile was friendly. “Axel hasn’t stopped talking about you since yesterday. I’ve never seen him get this way about a girl.”

I went an even deeper shade of red.

“Max, if you don’t start driving us soon, the restaurant is going to close before we get there,” Axel joked.

On the drive there, Max continued to talk about how obsessed his future Alpha was with me, but Axel took it in stride. Surprisingly, I felt relaxed and enjoyed their friendly banter.

When we arrived at the restaurant, Axel opened my door and offered his hand to help me out of the car. Butterflies erupted in my stomach when he kissed the back of my hand.

I shouldn’t be surprised by how romantic he was. Axel was an artist, after all.

At the hostess stand, he used his connections to get us a private booth in the back.

“Right this way, sir,” the blonde hostess said, eyeing Axel appreciatively. But she paused when she spotted me. Her eyes narrowed a little as she studied me.

I knew no one would expect someone as low-status as me to be with Axel. The hostess probably thought I was only after his money.

But I wasn’t going to let her judgmental behavior ruin my night.

With my head held high, I walked through the crowded restaurant with my arm looped through Axel’s.

Yet, the hair on the back of my neck stood up. Someone was watching me.

I glanced to my left discreetly, and my stomach plummeted when I met the gaze of the last person I wanted to run into tonight.

Elliot.
