Chapter 64: Personal

Chapter 64: Chapter 64: Personal
“I’m sorry, Isabella,” Elliot said. “Were you saying something?”

This was the wrong thing for him to say.

Isabella narrowed her eyes at her future husband, and her jaw clenched. She didn’t respond to Elliot’s question but ignored his outstretched hand. Isabella took Michelle’s hand and stormed away, pulling her younger sister behind her as she went.

Elliot stood there for a moment with his hands in his pockets, staring blankly at Isabella as she angrily slid open the patio door. Then, he looked back at me.

“This is the part where you go after her and beg her for forgiveness, or you can kiss your relationship goodbye,” I told him dryly.

“Yeah, dude, she’s right,” Axel said, still rubbing his throat where Gareth had choked him.

Without a word, Elliot sprinted up the patio stairs, calling out to Isabella, begging her to slow down even though she was already inside her house.

“Men,” I muttered under my breath, thinking of Gareth’s anger and Elliot in general.

“I know, right?” Axel came up beside me. “Men are the worst.” He shook his head with a self-deprecating smile.

Despite everything, I laughed. I liked someone who could make fun of themselves. But the smile dropped from my face with Axel’s next question.

“So, what’s up with you and Elliot?” he asked, his dark blue eyes studying my face. “I sense some chemistry between you guys. What’s the story there? Care to share?”

I froze. I shouldn’t underestimate Axel just because he liked to joke around. He was very perceptive and brave for being willing to speak to me after being threatened by his uncle.

As I met his gaze, my first instinct was to trust him. Axel was easy to get along with and seemed like he would make a good friend. A part of me wanted to confess everything that happened between Elliot and me—something that only Mindie knew.

But Isabella and he seemed to be close. I couldn’t risk confiding in him the truth. Axel might feel like he owed it to his cousin to tell her the truth, which would completely destroy Isabella. If that happened, Gareth wouldn’t hesitate to ruin my life.

I stared blankly at Axel and feigned confusion. “Me and Elliot?” I questioned it like the combination of our names was the most ridiculous pairing in the world. “There’s nothing between us. Sure, we grew up in the same pack, but he was only ever an acquaintance. I only truly met him when I first started working here.”

“Right...” Axel trailed off, still staring at me.

From the look in his eyes, I could tell he didn’t believe me. But, thankfully, he didn’t press me any further. I wasn’t the best liar, and I didn’t know if I could maintain the lie if he continued his questioning.

“I’m sorry for straining the relationship between you and your boss,” Axel added, referring to Gareth.

“Oh, you don’t have to apologize.” I dismissed him with a wave of my hand. “Besides, I’m not the one he injured, and we didn’t even technically do anything wrong. We were just sparring.”

“Is that all it was?” Axel murmured and stepped closer to me. My heart raced. “Just sparring? From where I’m from, we call it flirting.”

I swallowed nervously. Had I been flirting with him? It was true that I found him interesting and enjoyed talking with him.

“I hope that my uncle didn’t scare you away from me,” Axel continued, stepping even closer, until our faces were only inches apart.

I raised my eyebrows. “Why would I be scared? Your uncle threatened you, not me,” I pointed out. “Gareth said that he would take away his support to make you an Alpha.”

Axel shrugged. “Honestly, I don’t really care about being an Alpha,” he admitted, running a hand through his already tousled hair. “I am technically in line for the position, but that’s only because I’m my father’s only son, and my dad wants nothing more than for me to inherit his title. If I had it my way, I’d spend the rest of my life painting. And I’d be happier that way. I don’t want to be in charge of an entire pack. I already found what I love doing.”

We gazed at each other for a moment, and something passed between us. My heart warmed that he felt comfortable enough to share something so personal with me.

“Besides,” Axel continued. “I don’t need my dad’s money to get by. I’ve earned a decent living painting. I don’t want to depend on my family’s wealth or influence.”

Axel was being modest. From what I knew about him, he was making more than a decent living with his paintings. His art was so popular that he had to be sitting on a small fortune.

“So, my uncle’s threats don’t scare me,” he said. “He can’t do anything to affect my painting career, so I don’t really care about pissing him off.”

I snorted. “Axel, your uncle is the Lycan King. He is technically in charge of all werewolves. If he wanted to, he could ruin your life in seconds. I don’t think he’s a man who should be underestimated.”

He crossed his arms stubbornly.

“I held back when he threatened me so I wouldn’t hurt the old man,” Axel noted with a misplaced bravado. “If we had actually fought, rest assured, I would have come out on top.”

I giggled. “Right...” I trailed off, like he had done before.

We shared a grin, and I was surprised when I realized I did enjoy talking with him.

But after a moment, I remembered Gareth ordering me out of his house, saying that he would get one of his drivers to take me home. I needed to get going before I made him even angrier.

“I should go,” I said, heading over to one of the tables on the patio where I’d put my things.

As I zipped up my backpack, I felt a presence behind me. I turned, and my stomach swooped when I saw Axel five feet away, just staring intensely at me.

“What?” I asked.

Axel shrugged. “A guy can’t just enjoy the view?”

I flushed but turned around and continued to gather my things. As I took my phone from my backpack, Axel walked up beside me.

“Jasmine, can’t you feel that there’s something special between us?” he asked, his blue eyes on mine. “I’m not willing to walk away from what might be the best thing in my life.”

I paused and stared back at him. “Are you serious?”

“I want to take you out on a date tomorrow. Give me your number, and I’ll show you the best time of your life,” Axel promised. “No matter what my uncle says, I believe we owe it to ourselves to try to see where this goes. Don’t you think so?”

My mouth dropped open as Axel stared at me expectantly, waiting for my answer. How could he be so bold after Gareth had threatened his future position as Alpha and even his life?

The bigger question was, why did I feel so flattered? It couldn’t help but be secretly pleased with his genuine attempt to win me over, something that Elliot or Gareth never did. Sure, my wolf wasn’t purring with joy when I looked at Axel, but he was putting in the effort to romance me.

But was it smart to go out with him after witnessing Gareth’s reaction to us simply sparring? I could lose my job...

Don’t make this decision for anyone else. Go with your gut, I told myself.

An excited grin crossed my face, and I handed Axel my phone.

“Put your number in, and you can call me with the time you’re going to pick me up tomorrow night,” I said, shocked by my own bravery.
