Chapter 332: Chapter 332: Standing by Idly

Mrs. Song originally intended to take a nap, but after receiving this call, her sleepiness vanished instantly.

She immediately called her husband, Song Huaisan. "Did you hear about the matter with the Liu Family?"

"I heard," Song Huaisan replied. "This is targeting our Song and Liu families. The Shen Family is untouched, and now the entire Liancheng is laughing at us."

"Laughing at us for what?" Mrs. Song exclaimed.

"They’re saying that we tried to climb high, latched onto the Shen Family, but they don’t even give face to the Shen Family. Now, they’re taking aim at us everywhere just to humiliate us," Song Huaisan said angrily. "The whole city is mocking our Song Family. I’m wondering if we really made a mistake!"

"How could we possibly be wrong?" Mrs. Song screeched.

"We arranged for Song Xun and Shen Shuyi to get engaged. Who knows whether that was right or wrong?" Song Huaisan said. "What I’ve heard through the grapevine is that someone wants to humiliate us."

"Nonsense!" Mrs. Song cursed. "I arranged for my own son to marry, what does that have to do with anyone else?"

Suddenly, a thought flashed through her mind. Someone was targeting her because of her son’s marriage.

Why would they do this?

The motive was not simple.

Someone must have a purpose for doing this.

Who stands to benefit?

Muyu? Huo Chenxi?

In an instant, these two names popped into Mrs. Song’s head.

Song Muyu wanted to deal with the Song Family? No, she didn’t have the capability.

What about Huo Chenxi?

Mrs. Song immediately said to her husband, "Do you still remember that Huo Chenxi who appeared at the engagement banquet?"

"What about him?" Song Huaisan paused. "You suspect he’s involved?"

"Could it be possible?" Mrs. Song retorted.

"Impossible," Song Huaisan flatly denied. "He doesn’t have that much power. If he did, do you think the Shen Family would have agreed to let their daughter marry your son? She’d have been married to him long ago."

"Then who could orchestrate such a grand move?" Mrs. Song thought Song Muyu didn’t have the capability either, nor did her friends seem likely to have such ability.

"If I knew, would I still be sitting here waiting?" Song Huaisan said firmly. "I’ve used so many connections to find out even a little bit of information. Whoever’s behind this wants to send us a message—that forming an engagement with the Shen Family was a mistake."

"This is absolutely not a mistake," Mrs. Song said resolutely. "It’s the perfect choice."

"Siyun," Song Huaisan sighed. "Do you still think so, even now?"

"I will believe it until my dying breath," Mrs. Song said with unwavering determination. "You can’t blame this event for happening just because you couldn’t deal with the challenges."

Song Huaisan paused. "Fine. Since you believe it’s the right choice, we’ll stand firm and see it through."

"Endure to the very end," Mrs. Song gritted her teeth. "I refuse to believe that the combined strength of the Song Family, Liu Family, and Shen Family can’t hold out."

"It may just be the Song and Liu families," Song Huaisan said with a cold laugh. "The Shen Family is sitting on the sidelines and doesn’t care if we live or die."

"No, that’s not possible. I’ll contact Shen Shuyi," Mrs. Song said regretfully. She hadn’t seen Shen Shuyi today and was already disappointed.

Moreover, she’d heard from Song Muyu that Shen Shuyi was aware of her and Song Xun’s arrangement. This was the perfect chance to probe the situation and figure out what was going on.

So, she hung up and called Shen Shuyi.

The line was busy.

Shen Shuyi was on the phone.

At that moment, Shen Shuyi was answering a call from her father, Shen Mingfan.

"Shuyi, have you heard about the Song Family’s matter?"

"Dad, I did." Shen Shuyi’s expression had already calmed down as she replied over the phone. "If the Song Family asks you for help, just refuse. There’s no reason to get involved in this mess."

Shen Mingfan was momentarily stunned. "What happened?"

"Dad, the situation is very unclear right now. Acting rashly to help may drag the Shen Family down as well. Although I know this engagement was impulsive on my part, I still understand my role as a daughter of the Shen Family. Of course, the Shen Family comes first," she said.

Upon hearing this, Shen Mingfan grew delighted immediately. "That’s my daughter—pragmatic in a critical moment. Very good, I’m reassured."

"Dad, my future mother-in-law has been calling me. If I’m not mistaken, it’s likely because she wants our Shen Family’s help."

"Alright, you go handle it," Shen Mingfan said.

Shen Shuyi hung up the call but did not rush to return Mrs. Song’s calls. Instead, she set the phone aside.

Mrs. Song called three more times, two of which the line was busy, and the third went unanswered.

Mrs. Song felt a pang of anxiety and her expression grew grim.

Shen Shuyi was deliberately ignoring her calls.

She hung up and tossed her phone onto the sofa.

Mrs. Song grew increasingly exasperated. Shen Shuyi was clearly upset, but she couldn’t let the matter go.

Mrs. Song didn’t rush to call again, choosing instead to wait patiently.

Soon, Shen Shuyi returned her call.

"Auntie, you called me?"

"Shuyi, Auntie wanted to apologize to you today. I didn’t raise my son well, so I wanted to call and comfort you," Mrs. Song said.

"Auntie, I’m fine." Shen Shuyi’s tone was calm. "I’ve come to understand Song Xun’s temperament. Today, I went to visit your daughter in the hospital. She seems to have misunderstood me. I was hoping you could help clarify that I was merely checking in on her."

Mentioning Song Muyu only fueled Mrs. Song’s anger, and her tone hardened. "That disrespectful girl! Don’t pay attention to her childishness."

"I won’t hold it against Muyu," Shen Shuyi said with a laugh. "I understand it’s hard for her to accept my engagement to Song Xun for now."

"Shuyi, you’re so considerate," Mrs. Song said with a smile. "Shuyi, you already know she wasn’t born to me. We raised her, but she has opinions about us. I won’t dwell on her. Right now, you and Song Xun are a family."

The implicit message was that Mrs. Song only recognized Shen Shuyi.

"Thank you, Auntie," Shen Shuyi said. "I understand."

"So, Shuyi, given the current troubles for the Song Family, could you talk to your father about looking into it for us?"

"Auntie, my father surely sees this as his own matter to handle. But you know, Song Xun and I are only engaged for now. Muyu did say one accurate thing—I currently don’t have the standing to represent Song Xun or the Song Family."

Mrs. Song froze, immediately understanding her meaning. "We’ll start arranging your wedding right away."

"Thank you, Auntie," Shen Shuyi replied, her tone neutral.

After hanging up, Mrs. Song realized something—Shen Shuyi wasn’t so easy to handle either.

Narrowing her eyes, she dialed Song Xun. "Song Xun, I don’t care what you have to do. You and Shen Shuyi must get married and register the marriage immediately."

Receiving the call, Song Xun thought his mother had gone mad.

He laughed and said, "How about I let Dad handle it?"
