Chapter 103: Chapter 103 I’m Not Good-Looking, and I Have an Even Worse Temper

"I’ve deleted it, sorry," Qiao Rui spoke up again.

Pei Liyan glanced at Qiao Rui’s back, and a cold voice spilled from his thin lips, laden with immense pressure, "Show me your phone!"

Qiao Rui felt a chill down her spine at his words and turned her head to look at Pei Liyan, her gaze growing cold as well.

She said, "Mr. Pei, why should I show you my phone?"

"Because you’re lying!" the man’s tone was even colder.

"Mr. Pei is the one who has a habit of lying," Qiao Rui retorted.

"Were you eavesdropping on my phone call last night?"

Uh!

So, he suspected her of eavesdropping.

She had thought he suspected she was the Ruirui he was always thinking about.

Qiao Rui’s downcast eyes flickered but she didn’t engage him.

Pei Liyan swept her with a displeased glance and said with a stern voice, "I didn’t expect you to eavesdrop."

Indifferently, Qiao Rui said, "You can say whatever you like, but if you’ve been slighted by another woman, please don’t take it out on me. I can’t bear it, and I don’t want to."

That sentence, sharp as a spike, pierced straight into Pei Liyan’s heart, making his breathing hitch and strengthening his belief that she had overheard his phone conversation.

"Don’t eavesdrop in the future!"

Qiao Rui met his gaze unflinchingly, locking eyes with him before saying a moment later, "Mr. Pei, why don’t you consider moving out, or I can move out?"

"You’ve got some nerve!" Pei Liyan scoffed coldly, "Do you think you have any bargaining chips?"

"I have nothing to lose, unlike those who have shoes to worry about," Qiao Rui stated calmly.

"Is that so? Would you like to try?" Pei Liyan’s tone was icy.

With a calm demeanor, Qiao Rui stated word by word, "Mr. Pei, you’d best not threaten me. I’m not only lacking in looks but also in temper."

She spoke so calmly, yet each word seemed to carry shards of ice, chilling to the bone.

Pei Liyan was momentarily lost, his thoughts in disarray, those icy words flashing through his mind, clearly conjuring another face.

Unfortunately, that face only made him feel more stifled, having slept poorly the night before, a heaviness in his heart that he couldn’t shake off.

He intended to rebuke her but found the words tasteless upon reaching his lips.

Pei Liyan fixed his gaze on Qiao Rui, feeling a harsh sting in his heart.

The atmosphere in the dining room instantly solidified, as if one were in a freezer.

At that moment, Mrs. Feng came in with breakfast and was startled by their tension.

"Sir, Madam, the meal is ready. Please come and eat!"

"Right away." Qiao Rui smiled faintly, seemingly indifferent to the previous unpleasantness, but deep in her eyes, there was a touch of disdain and mockery.

Mrs. Feng glanced again at Pei Liyan.

Yet, with just a cold look from the corner of his eye, she quickly set down the breakfast and hurried out.

The atmosphere at the table remained tense.

Neither spoke.

Pei Liyan glanced at the silent Qiao Rui.

He could tell, this girl was not to be trifled with.

Her demeanor was clearly resistant, a reflection of her dissatisfaction and contempt for him.

Only then did Pei Liyan realize that this sixth young miss from the Qiao Family, from the countryside, was not as obedient as she appeared on the surface. She had a powerful presence despite her plain looks and definitely would not simply erase and accept being manipulated.

Qiao Rui quietly ate her breakfast, not mentioning the earlier incident or speaking a word.

Pei Liyan kept silent.

Twenty minutes later.

The silent breakfast finally concluded, and Qiao Rui got up, preparing to go upstairs.

"Stop," Pei Liyan spoke.

Qiao Rui paused.

Pei Liyan said, "As you wish, I’ll move out for a week."

Qiao Rui was startled. "Only a week?"

There was disdain in her tone, clearly resentful of the brief duration.

"Do you want to usurp the nest?"

"Let’s just forget I said anything." Qiao Rui tugged at her lip.

"Qiao Rui, do you really want to move out that badly?" Pei Liyan voiced her innermost thoughts directly.

Suddenly, Qiao Rui was taken aback.

He could actually tell that she wanted to leave at any moment.

Seeing her expression, Pei Liyan’s gaze sharpened as he looked directly into her eyes and continued bluntly, "Do you feel aggrieved being my wife?"

Qiao Rui snapped back to reality and openly said, "Yes!"

Pei Liyan suddenly frowned.

Her straightforward one-word reply really left him speechless.

He raised his eyebrow and counter-questioned, "No sense of security?"

Qiao Rui met his gaze. "That’s not it."

The man’s gaze suddenly intensified, piercing as he looked at her, his eyes burning.

Qiao Rui felt his gaze was too sharp, like a spotlight that could easily penetrate the heart.

"Oh? Then what is it?" He seemed very interested, persistently inquiring.

Qiao Rui fell silent for a moment before speaking, "Although we’re a sham couple, I still don’t like being cuckolded."

A flame flickered in the depths of Pei Liyan’s eyes, and his brows knitted tightly.

Qiao Rui’s gaze was candid as she said, word by word, "No one likes to be cuckolded, Mr. Pei. If you can’t keep your third leg in check, you shouldn’t restrain me."

"What do you want then?" Pei Liyan didn’t deny the fact of his infidelity.

"No matter what you think, I just hope this marriage ends soon, and I get my freedom back."

Her tone was indifferent, measured, calm, and gentle, without any special emotion, as if that was the way it was, she would not get angry, but she wouldn’t let anyone bully her either.

Pei Liyan looked at her, that plain face and those dowdy glasses somehow became much more pleasing to the eye.

He curled the corners of his mouth in a slight smile, yet his words were the coldest, "I’m sorry, Miss Qiao, but you seem to have misunderstood. This marriage between us is not for you and me to decide."

Qiao Rui was stunned by his words, and it took her a while to regain her composure.

Afterward, she smiled and said, "That’s true, the heart is never satisfied!"

Pei Liyan’s deep gaze fixed on her.

Qiao Rui turned and went upstairs, leaving the man behind. The conversation ended with "the heart is never satisfied."

It was unclear whether she was talking about herself or him, or whether they both had already sunk so deep into it that there was no choosing.

It was as if she was mocking him and at the same time, mocking herself.

Human nature!

While the abyss has a bottom, the human heart is unfathomable.

The Pei Family.

Pei Liyan appeared, his suit immaculate, not a wrinkle in sight, as though it were a brand-new product, its creases ironed to perfection, straight as a line.

And that pristine white shirt exuded a high-end sense of asceticism.

That sharply defined face, set off by the simple black and white clothing, looked even more aloof and noble.

Upon seeing Pei Liyan, Qiao Xiang’s dim eyes immediately brightened, and she stood up, greeting him with a smile, "President Pei, good morning!"

"Good morning!" Pei Liyan nodded lightly as he passed by the secretaries’ area and strode towards the president’s office.

Qiao Xiang followed closely behind, "President Pei, would you like something to drink?"

Seeing her follow, Pei Liyan spoke in a deep tone, "Secretary Qiao, you don’t need to do these things. Stick to your own duties, call Si Ran in."

Qiao Xiang was taken aback, her expression stiffening.

"Knock, knock, knock!" The knocking sounded at the door.

The next second, Si Ran’s voice was heard, "President Pei, your black coffee."
