TALA’S POV

Hiding behind the path that led to Mount Chugach Jail, I waited for Hunter to appear after Everest gave me the intel that our mole in the Golden Pack shifter had given us. He had also informed me that Lobo Aria had a private meeting with Ralph Isla and Boris Carter last night. Hunter was unhappy as he barged into the offices and left angry. The whole enforcer office and members kept away from him, as he had been in a foul mood since then.

The truth was, I had for years my wolf sensed that Hunter was my mate. At first, I was angry and cursed at the moon gods for the destiny they bestowed upon me. But when I left the enforcers and sought the protection of Lucian, I realized Hunter was already deep in Lobo Aria’s clutches. Hence, I had made a mental note to help him. Especially since lately, Lobo Aria seemed to overlook Hunter by using the mangy wolves for his benefit.

"And where the fuck is he?" I cursed after an hour of waiting.

"Why are you following me?" I heard Hunter’s voice reach my ears.

"I am not" I turned around and found Hunter leaning by the tree looking bored with a rack sack on his back.

"Tala, I am not in the mood for any games or jokes today. Go away, " He said and turned around to leave.

"You know, felt the mating call for so many years. Yet I held back. " I spoke up to him and saw how his body stiffened at my words. I had decided to hit directly at him with my words and not beat around the bush.

"What are you talking about? " He turned around, feigning innocence, and demanded.

I smirked at him as I sat down on the meadow and then chuckled, " Did you suppress your wolf? Is that why he never makes a move or what ?"

"Watch your mouth lil gal" Hunter growled at me as his hands fisted at his sides.

"I have been watching my mouth all my life, but since I came under Lucian’s protection, I feel free. So I will not hold back," I informed Hunter.

"If you are here to taunt me, just know that am not interested, " Hunter chuckled. " I have no patience for anyone today, tomorrow, or even the day after.

"Even for me? "I raised an eyebrow at him.

He remained silent as he watched me, and then he turned and walked away. I stood up and rushed after him as we walked up the mountain. I was surprised that he allowed me to follow him all the way. The fog picked up and the sunset and the chilly night air pushed in.

I could tell Hunter slowed down as we approached the caves that led deep into the mountain.

"I am camping here for the night, "Hunter announced and dropped the rack sack by one of the trees as he disappeared into the woods. I walked to the tree, slid down, and leaned on the rack sack as I waited for his return. I closed my eyes and pulled my coat around me to chase away the cold that surrounded me.

"Have you no sense of place? How can you just sleep anywhere?" I heard Hunter’s voice reach my ears.

I sat up and the sight that greeted me was a fireplace that Hunter had set up. He was roasting chicken and there were two water bottles placed beside me.

"Did you fall asleep?" I spoke out loud.

"You did, "He responded as he continued to roast the chicken.

"How is that possible? My wolf never lets me sleep anywhere, "I retorted.

"That is because it knows you are safe with me, "Hunter whispered.

I felt the words rake my body, and I looked away in embarrassment. I stood up hurriedly and then turned to leave and Hunter’s growl stopped me, and shot. "I am going to do woman’s business. Do you want to accompany me?" I sneered as I strolled into the woods.

Once I reached a distance, I used my power to nudge my wolf. " Elisha wake up "

"What is it? Elisha yawned.

"Why the fuck did you fall asleep? "I demanded.

"We are next to our mate. Why would we be worried? " Elisha asked.

"Stop it. I don’t want to be mated to him, "I seethed.

"Impossible. He is our mate. You have been running for too long and today you showed up yourself next to him, "Elisha pointed out.

"I am only here under orders to investigate. I need to distract him so that Everest can access the prison, "I defended myself.

Elisha just snickered and went back to sleep. I stood in the cold for a minute and then rushed back to where Hunter had set camp. I found that he had placed the chicken on what looked like a plate and cut the meat into pieces. I sat down and he handed it over to me as he picked one and chewed slowly.

We ate silently and once done; I picked up the bottle of water and drank it, welcoming the cold that burnt my throat.

"You will achieve nothing if you follow me," Hunter said.

"How sure are you?" I smirked.

"You are here to distract me so that your team can access the prison" Hunter laughed. "But it’s impossible to access it. The place is a fortress since Lyal is in prison."

"I am just here to annoy you" I retorted "No need to be so uptight"

"I would urge you to go back. If Lobo finds out you followed me, things will not end for you," Hunter stated.

"You will never allow him to hurt me, "I smirked, and our eyes clashed in the dark.

"What the fuck do you mean? I am only loyal to Lobo Aria, " Hunter asserted.

"You would rather die than let him lay a finger on me. " I grinned and tilted my head up to challenge him.

His eyes blazed at me and he snickered, " Why now? You always pushed me away and never showed interest in the fact that we are mates. "

"It’s never too late, and I will not allow my mate to be my enemy. " I leaned back on the tree and watched his eyes follow my movements.

"Is that why you are here, Tala Elijah? To save me from myself?" Hunter chuckled.

I stared at Hunter’s mouth and bit my lip as I responded, "I wonder if you can be saved. "

"What are you doing? " Hunter whispered as his eyes remained glued on my lips.

"Pushing your buttons. " I unzipped my jacket and rubbed my neck seductively.

Hunter’s intake of breath and curse was exhilarating as he stood up hurriedly to run away. I was not going to let him off as I grabbed his arm and in the next instance, Hunter had me pinned on the ground in a flash and he got on top of me.

"Stop," He growled at me and I tried to push my legs around his waist but he was too strong and pinned my legs on the ground.

"Why" I lifted my head to him and attempted to press my lips on him and he evaded it and the kiss landed on his cheeks.

"Tala, please don’t do this. I already spent years holding back since you showed me that you never wanted to be my mate. Why are you doing this? Do you want me to betray Lobo? That will never happen," He growled and then pushed off me.

I lay on the ground as he stared down at me while his eyes blazed, but amidst the darkness, I could see the blush on his cheeks.

"I wanted to confirm if I can affect you," I responded. Raising my hand, I informed him, "Pull me up"

He hesitated for a moment but then grabbed my hand to pull me up. I pulled him down, and he already anticipated my move and remained stoic. I smiled and allowed him to pull me and we stood staring at each other as I held on to his hand.

"Listen, I know I am hard-headed and impossible to deal with. But everyone in my family already noticed how you watch me and the awkwardness between us, "I told him as I moved closer and stood staring up at him. "I can feel your stares though I pretended to ignore you, but it seems that the fact that you are starting to doubt Lobo Aria makes me want to protect you"

"I am an enforcer, Tala. What is there to protect about me? " He responded, but the rasp in his voice made me press myself closer to him.

"What should I do?" I snaked one hand around his neck, pulled him down, and pressed our lips together. The action made me moan and Hunter’s growl rumbled in his cheek. We stood like that for what seemed like forever, but then Hunter stepped back and pushed me away.

"Lobo Aria will never let us be," Hunter stated. "And for that reason, I made peace with watching you from a distance. Get to sleep, tomorrow go back to your family, they will protect you better than me. "
