Chapter 38: 38.
The dimly lit room was silent except for the faint hum of the computer in front of Augustin. His fingers danced across the keyboard, typing in rapid succession as streams of data flashed on the screen. He was focused, brows furrowed in concentration, eyes locked on the monitor.
Leclair, sitting in his wheelchair beside him, watched with a keen eye. His face was calm, but there was a sharp intensity in his gaze as he studied Augustin’s every move.
"How much longer?" Leclair’s voice cut through the quiet, low and measured.
Augustin, without taking his eyes off the screen, replied, "Just a few more minutes. Whoever this guy is, he’s good at covering his tracks."
Leclair nodded thoughtfully, his hands clasped together in his lap. "He’d have to be, given the mess he walked into. Saving Adrian like that... no one does something like that without a motive."
"Agreed," Augustin muttered, his fingers pausing briefly before he hit enter. The screen flickered, and finally, a profile appeared. Augustin leaned back slightly, studying the information. "There. Got him."
Leclair wheeled closer, his eyes narrowing as he took in the details. "So, who is he?"
Augustin’s lips pressed into a thin line as he read through the man’s background. "His name is Isaac Shaw. Part of the Shaw family."
Leclair’s expression darkened. "Of course. The Shaws."
Augustin nodded, his voice grim. "The Shaws have always kept to themselves, running in the shadows of high society. They’ve got their hands in everything—politics, business, and especially the underworld. Isaac Shaw, however, isn’t just another heir to the Shaw fortune. He’s known to operate on the fringes of society, working with a covert group that’s been at odds with both Lady Sachel and the Hudel family for years."
Leclair frowned. "So, he’s a vigilante?"
"Something like that," Augustin confirmed. "From what I can gather, Isaac doesn’t work for the Shaws in the traditional sense. He’s more like an enforcer—a ghost that takes matters into his own hands. The Shaw family keeps him at arm’s length, but they benefit from his actions. It’s no wonder he intervened that night. He wasn’t there for Adrian. He was there for someone else entirely."
Leclair leaned back in his wheelchair, contemplating this new information. "And yet, he still saved Adrian. Why?"
Augustin shrugged. "Could be convenience. Could be a message. Either way, it’s clear that Isaac has his own agenda. The Shaws have always been unpredictable, and if Isaac is involved, it’s going to complicate things."
Leclair remained silent for a moment, his mind racing. The Shaws were an old family, as powerful as they were ruthless. They had managed to stay under the radar for years, but their influence was undeniable. If Isaac Shaw was acting on their behalf, it meant that the game was far more dangerous than they had initially thought.
Finally, Leclair spoke, his voice steady but laced with resolve. "We need to know more about Isaac. What he wants, why he’s interfering, and what his connection to Lady Sachel is. If the Shaws are involved, we’re going to need to tread carefully."
Augustin nodded, his eyes still on the screen. "I’ll dig deeper. I’ve already hacked into some of the Shaw family’s communications. It’s not easy, but I’ll get us more intel soon."
Leclair glanced at him, a small smile playing on his lips. "You’ve always been the best at this, Augustin."
Augustin smirked, his gaze softening as he looked at Leclair. "You flatter me, love. But I’m not the one pulling the strings here. The Shaws are dangerous, and Isaac Shaw... he’s something else entirely."
Leclair sighed, rubbing his temple. "We’ve dealt with worse."
"True," Augustin replied, leaning back in his chair. "But Isaac Shaw is a wildcard. He’s not playing by the same rules as Lady Sachel or the Hudels. His motivations are personal, and that makes him unpredictable."
Leclair nodded in agreement, his mind already working through the possibilities. "Do you think we can use him? Turn this situation to our advantage?"
Augustin considered this for a moment, his eyes narrowing in thought. "It’s possible. But it’s risky. We don’t know what he wants yet, and until we do, we’re playing with fire."
Leclair tapped his fingers on the armrest of his wheelchair, a thoughtful look crossing his face. "If Isaac is a threat, we need to neutralize him. But if he’s an ally, even a reluctant one, we need to find a way to bring him into the fold."
"That’s a fine line to walk," Augustin said quietly. "And it’s one that could blow up in our faces if we’re not careful."
Leclair met Augustin’s gaze, his expression serious. "I trust you to make the right call."
Augustin smiled softly, reaching out to touch Leclair’s hand. "I won’t let you down. We’ll figure this out."
Just then, the door to their private study creaked open. Ethan stepped inside, his usual calm demeanor betrayed by the slight tension in his shoulders. He glanced between Leclair and Augustin before speaking.
"Did you find anything?"
Leclair and Augustin exchanged a glance before Leclair responded, "Yes. We found the man who saved Adrian. His name is Isaac Shaw, part of the Shaw family."
Ethan’s brows furrowed. "The Shaws? What do they have to do with this?"
"We’re not entirely sure yet," Augustin explained, his tone measured. "But Isaac isn’t working directly for the Shaws. He’s part of a shadowy group that operates on the fringes of society. He’s dangerous, but we don’t know his full intentions."
Ethan crossed his arms, clearly frustrated. "So, what do we do now?"
Leclair’s eyes narrowed, a calculating gleam in his gaze. "We gather more information. Isaac Shaw may be a threat, or he may be an opportunity. Either way, we need to understand what he wants before we make our move."
Ethan didn’t look entirely convinced. "And if he’s a threat?"
Leclair’s voice was cold and resolute. "Then we deal with him. Swiftly."
The room fell into a heavy silence, each of them lost in their own thoughts. The discovery of Isaac Shaw had complicated things, but it also presented new possibilities. If they could uncover his motives and figure out where his loyalties truly lay, they might be able to turn the situation in their favor.
After a moment, Ethan sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Fine. But I don’t like this. Adrian’s been through enough already."
Leclair nodded in agreement. "We’ll protect him. No matter what."
Augustin leaned back in his chair, watching the interaction between the two brothers. His gaze flickered between them, noting the tension in Ethan’s stance and the determination in Leclair’s eyes.
As the conversation died down, Augustin returned his focus to the computer. There was still more digging to be done, more secrets to uncover. And as much as he trusted Leclair, he knew that the path ahead was fraught with danger.
Because Isaac Shaw wasn’t just a threat. He was a storm brewing on the horizon, and when he finally made his move, it would change everything.
