Chapter 79: The Beginning of the Scandal
Chapter 79: Chapter 79: The Beginning of the Scandal
April, one of Zhou Yun’s most significant jobs was the VX fashion show.
The venue for the VX fashion show was set in a modern art museum.
Renting this museum was a hefty expense, but what shocked the industry even more was not just inviting Zhou Yun as a guest model, but also bringing in Song Chi.
Zhou Yun had known for a while that Song Chi would come.
Zheng Xiaowen’s relationship with Victor’s editor-in-chief Chen Ting was profound, and Chen Ting felt indebted to Song Chi. After crunching the numbers, they were all from the same small circle. This fashion show was VX’s debut in the Mainland China market and held extraordinary significance; Song Chi would undoubtedly be there to support the event.
This inevitably meant Zhou Yun would be associated with Song Chi again.
Zhou Yun reminded Zheng Xiaowen, "Just don’t let the rumors about me and Song Chi overshadow you. Make sure your team suppresses our trending topics."
Despite being extremely busy today, Zheng Xiaowen still devoted a significant amount of time backstage to confirm every last detail.
Upon hearing Zhou Yun’s reminder, Zheng Xiaowen said, "Don’t worry, Mr. Chen has already contacted Weibo in advance."
Zhou Yun didn’t expect that Chen Fusi could also pull strings with Weibo.
He was so mysterious, yet seemed to have connections everywhere and could hold a conversation with anyone.
She waited backstage, changing clothes, and getting ready for hair and makeup.
Apart from her, Zheng Xiaowen also invited Wen Xi, currently the top supermodel in the country.
Naturally, Wen Xi was responsible for opening the show.
Now, Wen Xi rarely walked domestic runways, or to be exact, rarely walked in fashion shows at all. A supermodel of her calibre, even at a friend cost, demanded a sky-high fee for an appearance—she wouldn’t emerge lightly, and if she did, it was for the opening or closing of a major show. However, Wen Xi was famously willing to support domestic brands and Chinese designers, so her presence here was not unusual.
Editors from major domestic fashion magazines were also in attendance, which was the result of many people’s efforts.
With these heavyweights in attendance, the show’s prestige was undoubtedly elevated.
It was now all about the reviews of the show.
Zheng Xiaowen had confidence in her designs, and so did Zhou Yun.
As a guest, Zhou Yun was the second-to-last to appear.
Looking at herself in the mirror, she nodded in satisfaction.
Applause from the audience indicated that the host had probably taken the stage.
Zhou Lan and Zheng Xiaojue conducted a final check on Zhou Yun, while stylists and makeup artists backstage were busy touching up the models.
This was Zhou Yun’s first experience of the backstage area of a runway show, and it was nothing like the organized chaos she had imagined; it was as disorderly as a ball.
Tall models dressed in elaborate outfits hurriedly prepared for their turn, with accessories issues cropping up one moment and high-heeled shoe dilemmas the next.
Zhou Yun wasn’t sure if this was normal, but upfront, Wen Xi had already taken the lead and walked out.
A burst of enthusiastic applause followed.
That applause was for Wen Xi.
Zhou Yun took a deep breath and said to Zhou Lan and Zheng Xiaojue, "I’m suddenly feeling nervous."
"It’s fine, even if you fall over, it doesn’t matter, you’re not a professional model," Zhou Lan bluntly responded.
Zhou Yun: "Then I’d be embarrassingly notorious."
"Then don’t fall," Zhou Lan said, "Relax, you got this."
At this point, Zheng Xiaojue lifted Zhou Yun’s phone, "Sister Xiao Yun, Song Chi sent you a message."
Initially, Zhou Yun’s phone was in Zheng Xiaojue’s care.
When Zhou Yun checked it, Song Chi’s message read: Good luck, don’t fall later.
Zhou Yun replied: Don’t be a jinx.
Song Chi said: If you fall, I’ll be the first to snap a photo and mock you on Weibo.
Zhou Yun: Get lost.
She handed the phone back to Zheng Xiaojue and turned away.
The actual runway walk was quite brief, typically lasting only about twenty minutes for the models.
Soon, it was Zhou Yun’s turn.
She stepped backstage, taking a deep breath.
Someone counted down for her. "Three, two, one, go!"
Zhou Yun stepped forward, took a couple of steps, made a turn, and a long runway appeared before her.
The sides and front were shrouded in darkness, with their silhouettes faintly visible.
Bathed in white light on the runway, Zhou Yun, like a proud swan, posed with hands on hips and walked slowly forward to the rhythm of the music.
She had been worried that if she saw Song Chi, she might burst into laughter.
But once on the stage, she realized she had worried for nothing—if she didn’t concentrate on distinguishing each person’s face, she wouldn’t even know where Song Chi was.
And she had no intention of looking for Song Chi.
In this moment, she was like the queen from the Divine Country, draped in gold-trimmed white chiffon, wrapped in moonlight.
There seemed to be cheers and applause in the distance.
Zhou Yun was unfazed, moving slowly and with resolve to her mark, where she slightly turned, and a cool smile unfolded on her austere visage.
It wasn’t warm or approachable, but it conveyed a sense of distance.
As if the queen of the Divine Country had graced you with a distant glance.
That smile wasn’t neighborly, instead, it felt like heavenly grace.
She turned around to walk back.
She could hear someone in the audience calling her name but didn’t know who.
All the way backstage, Zhou Yun finally heaved a sigh of relief.
Zheng Xiaowen was waiting for her there with a warm embrace.
"Xiao Yun, you truly are my best spokesperson."
Zhou Lan captured this moment with her phone.
After all the models had walked, Wen Xi was to lead them back onto the runway.
Although Zhou Yun could have skipped the final parade, she insisted on participating; the brief catwalk had given her an unexpected thrill.
With vigorous applause from the audience, Zheng Xiaowen took the stage as the fashion show concluded.
Her eyes were red with emotion and excitement as she delivered a speech thanking many.
There, Zhou Yun stood behind her, proud.
After the show, VX prepared afternoon tea for all the guests, the setup spread across the lawn outside where everyone mingled and chatted. Zheng Xiaowen, undoubtedly the star of the event, greeted every single person.
Zhou Yun appeared after changing her clothes, instantly drawing much attention. People marveled at how surprisingly steady her runway walk was and praised her outstanding performance. Zhou Yun wasn’t sure how genuine the compliments were but exchanged pleasantries with a laugh and a smile.
The outcome was a successful round amongst the editors of major domestic fashion magazines to show her face.
Between endless pleasantry exchanges and photo ops, Zhou Yun found it strange not to have seen Song Chi at all.
It was only upon meeting Zheng Xiaowen did Zhou Yun discover Song Chi had left early due to his busy workload and other commitments awaiting him.
Somehow, upon learning that Song Chi had already departed, Zhou Yun felt a tinge of disappointment.
Taking a sip of her drink, her phone suddenly vibrated twice.
It was a message from Song Chi: What a pity you didn’t fall; don’t disappoint me next time.
Any trace of Zhou Yun’s disappointment vanished instantly, and she tersely replied with a "Get lost."
