Chapter 794: Gong Baoding’s Predicament
Chapter 794: Chapter 794: Gong Baoding’s Predicament
Dense, dark clouds smothered the moon and the stars.
By the swamp’s edge, far from any human trace, darkness fell so thickly that one could not see their hand before their face.
In the center of a foul-smelling mud pit lay a half-dome rock, over five meters high and coated in slime, with several holes of varying sizes that resembled a nest of some creature.
Dozens of blurry shadows rapidly circled the rock, their bodies seemingly wrapped in a thick layer of mucus that, combined with the darkness, appeared exceedingly strange.
This nest had only appeared in this location for a few days, yet no living creatures were left nearby, all sufficiently large animals had become nourishment for the growth of these shadowy figures.
But now, these tyrants of the stinking mud pit were on high alert.
A red gleam appeared on the horizon, and a searing malice locked onto the nest behind them.
As the red gleam drew near, light returned to the area, a bird’s cry echoed around, and the shadows finally saw what the red gleam was.
It was a flame bird, with a wingspan close to ten meters and a long tail made of flames!
The flame bird carried an astonishing heat, distorting the air around it.
The shadow creatures hastily assembled, positioning their bodies in front of the nest, and spewed toxic mucus at the flame bird.
This mucus was highly toxic and nearly impossible to remove once it adhered, orders of magnitude more disgusting than the glue traps for rats.
But the flame bird neither dodged nor flinched; all the mucus evaporated from the heat before even making contact, turning into pungent smoke.
Then the flame bird, ignoring the shadows poised as if for a significant battle, rapidly flew past them. The shadows it grazed burst into flames and turned to ash with cries of agony.
The flame bird crashed directly into the rock nest, and the mucus on the rock caught fire like gasoline, instantly igniting.
Within the roaring flames, the flame bird soared into the sky, circling the rock a few times and occasionally flapping its wings to intensify the blaze. The tremendous heat soon dried out the stinking mud pit.
After only a few seconds, a fierce creature ablaze with fire broke free from the rock nest and lunged at the flame bird, trailing flames.
It was a desperate attempt, but to the flame bird, it meant nothing.
The flame bird simply extended a claw, seizing the monster and pinning it to the ground. The claw’s temperature rivaled that of a branding iron, and it didn’t take long before the creature was at death’s door.
Moments later, the flame bird’s body dissipated into the air, and in its place stood a somewhat slovenly middle-aged man.
That man was Gong Baoding.
He was the leader of the Hunter team in the nearby city, and this swamp was within his jurisdiction.
Gong Baoding sighed, "When I heard that a Disaster Level Sticky Shadow Beast matron had appeared, I had a bit of hope, but... you’re simply too weak."
The Sticky Shadow Beast glared at Gong Baoding with resentment. It was only hiding here to give birth to its young.
This man hadn’t even bothered to give a warning before attempting to annihilate them all, and now he was blaming it for being too weak?
However, the Sticky Shadow Beast had no chance to retort; Black Chains slithered from Gong Baoding’s hands like living things, binding the Sticky Shadow Beast matron. Then, both the creature and the chains vanished, as it was now contained within the Sanctuary.
The chains also encircled Gong Baoding, and he entered the Sanctuary, arriving in the Disaster Area.
Normally, when he passed through here, the irredeemable monsters would constantly heckle him, or hurl obscenities his way.
But today, these monsters were very quiet, all staring at a mirror as if they were anticipating something.
Without the harassment of those monsters, Gong Baoding was happy to enjoy the peace, and he quickly came to the cell of the Sticky Shadow Beast, starting to record the monster’s information on the card at the entrance.
Listing the basic information of the monster at the entrance isn’t a mandatory requirement of the Sanctuary, but most Containment Officers adhere to this rule, Wen Wen being an exception.
Name: Sticky Shadow Beast Matron
Level: Disaster Lower Order
Abilities: Reproducing Juvenile Sticky Shadow Beasts, Jetting Mucus, Shadow Concealment...
Remarks: The Juvenile Sticky Shadow Beasts birthed by this creature are comparable in strength to half a domestic goose, but they can parasitize humans and other sufficiently large creatures’ shadows through mucus, drawing nutrition from their hosts’ shadows.
After draining their hosts, the Juvenile Sticky Shadow Beasts will become Adult Sticky Shadow Beasts, whose strength is of Weak Disaster Level, but the adults won’t act independently and will only guard beside their matron...
Many monsters or Containment Items have derivatives, and the strength of these derivatives can sometimes be even less than that of a regular human, so the Sanctuary also has a set of classification for the strength of these monsters.
The strength of a person is equal to that of two dogs, and the strength of a dog is equal to that of two geese, although not very scientific, this measure has some reference value, although it does look somewhat odd.
After entering all the information, Gong Baoding felt a surge of strength flow into his body—this was the Sanctuary’s feedback for his act of capturing the monster.
Unfortunately, such feedback was no longer of any use to him.
The feedback gained from capturing monsters could only help Gong Baoding approach a breakthrough faster by saving him some time he would otherwise need for accumulation, but it wasn’t enough to lift him to higher levels.
Being the first Containment Officer to join the Sanctuary, Gong Baoding had long become a Mid-Tier Superhuman and had already touched the bottleneck of the Upper Sequence.
But if he wanted to advance further, the slight improvements from capturing monsters were utterly insufficient.
He needed an opportunity for a breakthrough, which could be a special encounter or an opponent of equal strength, but such opportunities were not easy to come by.
As the person responsible for a city, Gong Baoding’s current strength was more than enough to crush the various sizes of monsters that usually appeared, and his district rarely had monsters that he found troublesome.
Moreover, he had to fulfill his duties as a captain and couldn’t simply leave to seek battles with other powerful monsters.
For this reason, he applied for the Ranger exam, aiming to become a Ranger.
However, the exam schedule for Rangers was fixed, and finding a replacement team leader would also take some time.
In other words, Gong Baoding would have to remain in his current post for several more months at least.
Nevertheless, having been stuck at a certain realm for many years before he became a Containment Officer, Gong Baoding could wait a few more months.
"Slovenly Ghost, you just caught a monster too, what a coincidence."
"Eh... this monster is really ugly."
A petite figure clad in a Black Robe stood by Gong Baoding’s side, looking at the Sticky Shadow Beast Matron with disdain as she spoke.
In her hands, she held a large bucket of popcorn provided for free by the Sanctuary, stuffing her mouth while nudging Gong Baoding with her elbow, handing him a packet of pickles.
The Sticky Shadow Beast covered its face, wishing it could find a crack to crawl into.
It was truly just at home giving birth, so why was it suddenly captured and brought here, only to be called ugly...
