Chapter 642: Chapter 631: Guardian of the Mining Disaster

Wen Wen’s lips curved up, becoming somewhat interested in this underground mine, "Tsk tsk, the doom of death... I’d like to see what could bring about my doom."

The monster that was translating for Wen Wen stood eagerly by, hoping for Wen Wen’s praise.

But Wen Wen simply waved it away back to the Sanctuary, thinking that if it wanted praise just for translating a single sentence, what rewards could he offer when they really needed to work hard?

Then Wen Wen snapped his fingers, activating the Poker General’s power, making his body as thin as paper, and slipped through the crack from where the sounds originated, following the noise to find what was hidden there. A person involved wouldn’t be of any help.

The mine shaft was complex and intricate, like a giant maze; without that mysterious sound, Wen Wen would have found it difficult to find the right path immediately.

He ventured here alone, having sent Tao Qingqing to deal with other cases in the city. This hunting incident involved two beings of the Disaster Upper Order; she wouldn’t be much help.

...

After a tortuous journey, Wen Wen stealthily made his way down dozens of meters below ground to a naturally formed underground cavern. Any ordinary person who accidentally entered might lose themselves forever in the darkness and then become food for some creature lurking there.

Within a vent of this cavern, a humanoid creature covered in black slime held a microphone, calling out energetically. It’s voice, modified by the horn to sound eerily deep, carried up into the mineshaft above.

"Arasha~ Asibale~~"

Occasionally, it would clear its throat to ensure it could articulate every syllable clearly.

Wen Wen, thin as a cicada’s wing, appeared silently behind it, quite speechless at this sight.

He had thought that the source of the sound would be something cursed or perhaps a powerful monster that had been sealed. He hadn’t expected it to just be some fool yelling...

The situation felt just like those science documentary programs Wen Wen had watched as a child that started like horror movies with fancy, pointless narratives, only to end in a comedic anticlimax.

For example, a man would bleed for no reason, yet blood could be drawn from his body, turning out to be from gum bleeding;

A mysterious flying stick appears in the sky, covered over three episodes, only to be a moth;

A man supposedly abducted by aliens wakes up in another province, only to find the man has psychological issues...

After dismissing the ridiculousness in his mind, Wen Wen began observing this mysterious creature. Its physique was similar to that of humans, but its body was covered in a foul-smelling black liquid, the black footprints most likely belonging to creatures of its kind.

The creature’s strength was not formidable, only at the Disaster Level, but it seemed to be a social creature since Wen Wen sensed many similar presences nearby and faintly others in the distance.

After thinking for a moment, Wen Wen drew out a runes longsword and tapped it on its shoulder. As for why not use his hand, of course, it was because he disdained the dirtiness of the creature.

The black creature, mid-yell and exuding ferocity, turned its head only to see the paper-thin Wen Wen holding a dagger at its shoulder. Its eyes showed fierce brutality, then it rolled its eyes and fainted, the whites of which were possibly the only white parts of its body.

"I haven’t even asked anything yet, and it fainted just like that... Oh, I forgot to turn off Pokerization. But given its faint heart, it is unlikely to be any evil creature."

Wen Wen summoned a stream of water to rinse off the microphone he had picked up and discovered it was a Superpower Item. Its sole ability was to make the spoken voice have a certain effect, either eerie and terrifying or holy and elegant, similar to the phantom colored cigarette holder; it was useless but fun.

"This thing is quite interesting, I’ll play with it first..."

If the Monster turned out to be harmless, Wen Wen might even return the microphone, but if it was problematic, then it would naturally become Wen Wen’s spoil of war.

Following that, Wen Wen described the Monster’s appearance briefly in the Demon Hunter community, and offered a reward of a hundred Demon Hunting Coins, hoping that some Demon Hunter who recognized this Monster could provide him with information about it.

Then, Wen Wen turned off the Ranger Terminal and looked deeper into the pit, where faint shouts that Wen Wen could not understand emanated, indicating a battle was happening based on the energy waves.

The fighting side and the black guy lying on the ground looked very similar, while the atmosphere of the other side was very strange, resembling the black Monsters but also like Plant Monsters.

Avoiding the black Monsters on the road, Wen Wen easily reached the direction of the battlefield, where there were about twenty black men-like Monsters fighting with a group of strange beings, all wielding weapons.

They were shouting in a strange language that Wen Wen could not understand.

The core of these Monsters consisted of some already shattered human skeletons, with something similar to mushrooms serving as their flesh, while roots wrapped around their bodies outside, forming a hard shell that resisted the attacks from the black Monsters.

The combination of mushrooms and plants made Wen Wen sure that these creatures were linked to Dr. Feng.

"Could he really be here?"

"No, wait... If he were here, these weak black Monsters wouldn’t be able to withstand it at all. Dr. Feng probably just left some arrangements here, then sat back and waited for these setups to take root."

As Wen Wen observed, he saw a black Monster being overpowered by a Plant Monster and dragged into a dark ore mine, where there seemed to be no light at all, yet Wen Wen’s eyes could still see very clearly, as this was not a purely light-less environment like the Underground Labyrinth.

Plant roots burrowed into the body of the black Monster, and shortly after, the plants took root and sprouted within the black Monster’s body, converting him into an existence just like the other Plant Monsters.

"The human bones, it turns out, are those of the black Monsters... It seems this battle is an internal conflict among Monsters and does not involve humans. Perhaps I shouldn’t get involved."

Just as he prepared to sit back and watch, Wen Wen’s Ranger Terminal vibrated with a response to his earlier inquiry.

He opened it and quickly skimmed through the top few uninformative, nonsensical responses, focusing only on the last long response.

This type of Monster mostly appears in the Golden Eagle District and the US-Canada District, known as Ore Ghosts, formed naturally from the souls of miners who died in mining accidents. They originate from the human bones buried underground, and the black fluid on their body comes from the impurities of the underground.

Before a mining accident occurs, miners usually report seeing these Monsters, and there are two theories about them: one is that they are Guardians of the miners, warning them of imminent danger through their intimidating behavior before disasters strike; the other theory is that they create mining accidents and revel in them, as they always appear at the scene of disasters.

Wen Wen turned off the Ranger Terminal and whispered, "I know what to do now."

The Ore Ghost that had frightened the miner, was indeed using this microphone to scare the miners, but it was also because of its intimidation that no human injuries had occurred here until now!
