Chapter 301: Chapter 299 Lethal Enticement

Finally, after wasting two notebooks, Wen Wen confirmed that out of all twelve runes, he was only able to carve three of them.

They were the first two runes of unclear meaning, and the one related to ghosts.

Then, Wen Wen looked towards the giant egg with a burning gaze.

He had never been so eager to obtain something. Even if he couldn’t pass the Ranger exam, it didn’t matter as long as he got the egg.

If he could upgrade the Sanctuary to Catastrophe Level, or even gain Catastrophe-Level strength in reality, then he would indeed be standing at the pinnacle of the Superpower World.

Wen Wen still remembered that the two previous occasions that led to the upgrade of the Sanctuary involved it absorbing Catastrophe-Level or even higher levels of energy.

Then, could this giant egg, being a Catastrophe-Level Containment Item, possibly lead to another upgrade of the Sanctuary?

Wen Wen was quite optimistic about this prospect; he had even imagined the scene of him possessing Catastrophe-Level strength.

So, with a slight nervousness, he materialized the Catastrophe Gloves, and as Wen Wen anticipated, the gloves craved the egg.

Next, he carefully brought his completely blackened right hand close to the massive barrier.

The immense energy tried to repel Wen Wen’s invading hand, but the barrier, capable of vaporizing monsters, couldn’t affect the Catastrophe Gloves in the slightest.

Finally, Wen Wen’s right hand stopped amidst the trembling of the barrier, as immense amounts of energy began surging into the Catastrophe Gloves.

However, after only absorbing for a second or two, Wen Wen sensed that the Catastrophe Gloves seemed to be trying to warn him.

"Warning, why the warning... isn’t this exactly what it desires," he muttered.

After a brief moment of reflection, a cold sweat instantly covered Wen Wen’s forehead, and then he immediately forced the Catastrophe Gloves to stop absorbing.

Wen Wen whispered to himself, "There’s something wrong with my thinking; how could I have completely overlooked this!"

Just a simple thought was enough to realize that the gloves were absorbing the energy of the barrier, and if the barrier was completely drained, the Catastrophe-Level Containment Item inside would be released!

Even if this egg-shaped Containment Item didn’t retaliate, Wen Wen couldn’t contain it himself because the upgrade of the Sanctuary would likely take at least a month, and considering the special nature of Catastrophe Level, it could take even longer.

Of course, the bigger possibility was that even after completely draining it, it would not meet the requirements for an upgrade!

And like that, Wen Wen would be unwittingly releasing this Catastrophe-Level Containment Item, potentially brewing a major Catastrophe!

Having calmed down, Wen Wen began reconsidering his recent actions, realizing that his thought process had been influenced since the moment he saw the Containment Item.

"All I could think about was maximizing benefits, wanting to evolve the Sanctuary faster, but I overlooked too many problems... That was very dangerous."

Wary, Wen Wen gave the giant egg a careful look; it appeared to be what was influencing his thoughts, trying to get him to release it.

Standing before the egg, he said ominously, "I don’t know if you can understand me, but since you dared to trick me, you will pay a price one day. I will come back for you, release you and find you a new home, one I believe you will like!"

Having said that, Wen Wen turned and walked away.

Staying in the vicinity any longer might subject him to further influence.

Since the item had tried to trick Wen Wen into attacking the barrier, it clearly knew that he had the power to break it, so Wen Wen wasn’t afraid of revealing himself in front of it.

...

Outside the Underground Palace, within the base, more than thirty Demon Hunters were resting or entertaining themselves in the lounge, having already passed the exam.

At this moment, 157 superpower users had emerged from the Underground Palace, but only thirty-two had remained.

Seventy or eighty people had completed the tasks of the Underground Palace, but most of them were persuaded to leave due to failing the first two parts of the exam.

The results of the first and second parts of the exam, requiring collective analysis by specialists, had only been released ten hours earlier.

The reason Demon Hunters were allowed to proceed to the next parts of the exam wasn’t that they had passed, but because their performance needed long-term analysis.

So, unless it was immediately clear that they couldn’t pass, they were all allowed to take part in the third part of the exam.

Those who failed the third part might have been unsuited to an environment without an aura, or not skilled in dealing with physically strong monsters, and some simply had bad luck, encountering several Disaster-Level monsters.

But whatever the reason, failure meant failure.

Whether it was luck or strength, Rangers would have to deal with much more complex situations than this, and if they couldn’t adapt here, they had no business being Rangers.

Of course, they could come back next year; the Hunters Association didn’t limit the number of times one could take the exam.

After all, every year, the Ranger exam participants would help the Association deal with some accumulated troubles...

Outside the door of the Underground Palace, a small pavilion was set up with a table and chairs under it. On the table, there were snacks like peanuts, edamame, roasted peanuts, and spicy stir-fried clams to accompany the liquor.

The blue-haired superpower user and Xun Qing sat there, drinking and chatting.

Xun Qing burped the taste of peanuts and glanced at the time, sighing, "There are thirteen hours and twenty minutes left until the deadline. There are still twenty-nine people inside, twenty-one of whom we assigned cleaning tasks. The remaining eight people..."

"Among the remaining eight, if there are no dark horses... then they probably won’t make it back. Let’s hope they get lucky," said the blue-haired superpower user, spitting out a clamshell.

Xun Qing used a stack of documents to wipe his hands and, flipping through them casually, said, "However, there’s a young man named Wen Wen who used a recommendation from Bing He. It’s said that he reached the Assimilation Realm in less than a year. It would be a pity if he were lost in there. I hope he gives me a surprise."

"There are always outstanding new talents every year, but very few ever become a pillar of the Association."

The blue-haired superpower user threw cold water on the sentiment. Before he was stationed at the base, he had seen too many rookie Demon Hunters die.

Suddenly, the blue-haired superpower user’s eyebrows twitched, and he crunched on the final clamshell with a twitching mouth.

"What’s wrong, is there trouble?" asked Xun Qing anxiously. There were many dangerous things detained here, and it would be terrible if something went wrong.

The blue-haired superpower user’s expression relaxed, and he swallowed the bits of shell, saying to Xun Qing, "It’s nothing, the barrier shook a little, probably that thing trying to come out again. Happens a few times every year, no big deal."

Reassured, Xun Qing relaxed, and the two continued their banter, waiting for the exam to end.
