Chapter 249: Chapter 247 What Are You Looking At?
However, Wen Wen was aware that even though he was getting stronger bit by bit, he really couldn’t be considered a superpower user.
A normal superpower user at his level of strength would be able to sense abnormalities, and upon advancing to the Assimilation Realm, might face a crisis severe enough to lose one’s self.
Yet, these were experiences Wen Wen had never had.
He trained with an extremely high intensity, only stopping after seven or eight hours; he had to do this to exercise his body because it had become too strong.
Wen Wen stood up, took a tissue to wipe the sweat off his forehead, and walked to the trash can to throw the tissue away.
"Eh... that’s not right, why did I walk over here to throw it away?"
Wen Wen was someone who disliked doing redundant things; he could have easily thrown the tissue into the trash can from the distance he was at before, so why did he make a point to walk over?
If it were an ordinary person, such a minute anomaly wouldn’t be given a second thought, they might not even notice it.
But Wen Wen was different; he was constantly struggling with losing control, so he paid close attention to his own state.
The moment a hint of abnormality appeared, he realized there was something wrong with himself.
"This town really isn’t right; even I am a bit disoriented... And there’s something off about the townspeople’s state too. No matter how strict management is, it shouldn’t be to this extent."
Suddenly, Wen Wen’s room door was forcefully pounded on.
"Save me, please save me!"
When Wen Wen opened the door, he saw a middle-aged man standing outside, disheveled and dispirited. This man was none other than Yuan Zhi, who had just fled from the church.
"You are Detective Wen, right? You’re a Demon Hunter, I need your help!"
Behind Yuan Zhi, the innkeeper was holding an oil lamp, calmly watching the two of them. In the glow of the fire, his face looked somewhat sinister.
Feeling uneasy, Wen Wen quickly ushered Yuan Zhi inside and immediately closed the door, blocking the innkeeper’s gaze.
"Speak up, who sent you here?"
Wen Wen did not believe that just any ordinary person could accurately find his address.
"A very tall and fat man, he said that only you could save me, I had no choice but to..."
The corners of Wen Wen’s mouth curled up, revealing a distorted smile, "Interesting, it seems they came for me... Tell me, what did you encounter?"
Since entering the town, Wen Wen had felt a subtle sense of discord; now that an actual issue had come knocking, he was much more excited.
Seeing Wen Wen’s smile, Yuan Zhi hesitated, but even if Wen Wen’s expression was frightening, it was still more comforting than those seemingly normal residents outside, so he chose to trust Wen Wen.
"It’s like this, I moved back here to live half a month ago..."
...
After listening to Yuan Zhi’s story, Wen Wen stroked his chin.
"If I hadn’t spent an afternoon in this town, I would have thought you were crazy, or that you had hallucinations, but now..."
Wen Wen was certain that there was indeed something wrong with the town!
He reached out, grabbing the broken pendant that was hanging on Yuan Zhi’s chest.
"You were unaffected by this town’s influence before, probably due to the protection of this pendant, but even the pendant has its limits, so it broke."
Hearing Wen Wen speak so authoritatively, Yuan Zhi looked at him with a hopeful gaze.
"Then... Detective Wen, can you get me out of here? If I stay here any longer, I might go insane."
Wen Wen nodded and said to Yuan Zhi with a smile, "That’s possible, but you can’t leave until everything is over..."
"Why?" Yuan Zhi asked, puzzled.
Wen Wen didn’t explain but instead stared at the bulging pocket, with a slight gleam in his eyes, he said, "I am a detective, and haven’t taken any cases recently... so... "
"Oh, I understand now."
Yuan Zhi pulled out a stack of money from his pocket and said to Wen Wen, "As long as you can get me out, I..."
Wen Wen snatched the money with one hand and said, "This will be enough, I guarantee you will be able to live a normal life from now on."
Yuan Zhi: "..."
Had it not been for the bizarre scene he had experienced before, and an Angel wanting to kill him, he might have even suspected Wen Wen was a conman.
Previously in Furong River City, all expenses for food, drink, and daily necessities were covered by Lin Zheyuan.
But after starting their journey, Wen Wen had no salary, and his car was quite a money pit, as just changing a tire recently had cost a lot of money.
Although Wen Wen still had plenty of savings, he couldn’t just sit and watch them dwindle, so he decided to go back to his old job as a detective and "help people out of disasters" in exchange for money!
As he was happily counting the money, Wen Wen’s expression suddenly changed, and he leaned over to peek out the window.
Down below, there were scattered lights of fire, a hundred or two townspeople gathered under the inn, each holding torches, looking sinisterly towards Wen Wen’s room.
Wen Wen licked his lips with his tongue and said with a tad of excitement, "Things are getting more and more interesting, someone’s making a move, huh? Come on, let’s go out and meet these people."
Then Wen Wen gestured, and Three Cubs climbed up his leg onto his neck.
"Wen, Detective Wen, are we really just going to go out like this?"
Looking at those townspeople outside, who were even more aggressive than before, Yuan Zhi’s legs trembled.
"Why be afraid when I’m here?" said Wen Wen nonchalantly, as if they were just ordinary people, and even if they had cheats, what could they really do?
"Can I... not go out then?" Yuan Zhi said as he stepped back.
"Hold on a moment."
Wen Wen took a piece of rope from the box, quickly tied a simple knot, then swung the rope around, and looped it over Yuan Zhi’s neck.
Yuan Zhi, unable to decide whether to laugh or cry, said, "Detective Wen, what are you doing?"
Without a word, Wen Wen yanked the rope and dragged Yuan Zhi out the door of the inn.
While leading Yuan Zhi along, Wen Wen shook his head: "Ah, why do I have to lead a man? If I were leading Hu Youling, how much more beautiful that scene would be."
As soon as they stepped out the door, all the townspeople stared at Wen Wen and Yuan Zhi with matching expressions, neither dispersing nor rashly approaching.
Yuan Zhi timidly hid behind Wen Wen, while Wen Wen looked completely natural. He would not change his behavior just because of others’ stares; that would hardly qualify him as a Pervert.
"What are you looking at? Never seen a handsome guy before?"
The town mayor walked out with a cane and said to Wen Wen, "Stranger, the man behind you is an unforgivable criminal, we want to take him to church for a trial, and you should not meddle."
Wen Wen cleaned his ear and asked, "Then, may I ask what crimes he has committed?"
"Lack of faith, discord in the family, greed, recklessness..." the mayor said without hesitation.
Wen Wen spat, "Pah, those accusations of yours, none violate the Federation’s criminal laws. Moreover, you are not law enforcement and have no right to judge others."
Although Wen Wen himself often took the law into his own hands in a vigilante fashion, when it came to accusing others, he felt not the slightest weight on his conscience.
