Chapter 208: Chapter 206: The Real and Fake Zheng Feng
Wasn’t my uncle just standing here? Why would there be a call from him?
Startled, Li Dazhuang consoled himself, "Seeing his condition, it’s possible he lost his cellphone on the way. Maybe someone found it and is calling me."
Li Dazhuang said to Zheng Feng, "Hang on a second, I need to answer a call."
Strangely enough, the manic Zheng Feng didn’t try to stop Li Dazhuang from answering the phone. Instead, he watched quietly with a hint of a cold smile in his eyes.
"Da Zhuang, you left your wallet at my place. Do you want to come back to get it?"
A familiar voice came through the phone, and upon hearing it, Li Dazhuang felt a bone-chilling coldness.
That voice was also his uncle’s.
But if the gentle voice on the phone was his uncle’s, then who was this person in front of him?
If the crazed Zheng Feng in front of him was real, then who was the one on the other end of the phone?
"No, no need, just leave it at your place; there’s nothing important in there."
As Li Dazhuang spoke, his teeth chattered. He could barely control his emotions.
On the other end of the phone, Zheng Feng offered eagerly, "All your money is here, along with your house keys. It’s so late; are you planning to walk home? Tell me where you are, and I’ll bring it to you."
Li Dazhuang stiffly declined, "Really, there’s no need, I..."
"Be good, listen to me. I’m coming to find you now. Wait for me on the road."
After saying that, the Zheng Feng on the phone hung up, not giving Li Dazhuang a chance to refuse.
As soon as Li Dazhuang put down the phone, Zheng Feng knocked it out of his hand, grabbed his wrist, and started sprinting with him.
"How about it, you realize the situation now, right? Something has been impersonating me all this time, and no matter how I act, no one ever notices - except for you."
"But why are we running?"
Li Dazhuang’s wrist hurt from the grip, and he was also worried about his phone. If he had it, he could call the police.
"Do you know who was the last to notice me?"
"Who?" Li Dazhuang asked, breathless.
Zheng Feng said solemnly, "It was your aunt. The day after she noticed something was off, she was killed by that thing. I can’t let you follow in her footsteps."
His aunt was dead?
Wasn’t she supposed to have gone back to her parents’ home?
Li Dazhuang was frightened and didn’t resist, letting Zheng Feng drag him along for a while.
But as they ran, he started to notice something was amiss. Why were the lights around them getting fewer and the area more secluded?
Moreover, during the run, he could never see Zheng Feng’s face!
The uncle on the phone might have been problematic, but was this uncle beside him truly without issue?
So, Li Dazhuang quickened his pace, got in front of Zheng Feng, and when he saw Zheng Feng’s face, his heart nearly stopped.
He was grinning maliciously!
At that moment, Li Dazhuang remembered. It was with that same expression that Zheng Feng had once bitten a rat to death!
Li Dazhuang struggled desperately, but whether it was because of Zheng Feng’s immense strength or his own exhaustion from running, he couldn’t break free from the grip.
The hand was like a pair of pliers; no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t move it even slightly.
"Uncle, you’re hurting me, let go," Li Dazhuang pleaded.
Zheng Feng replied, "Can’t let go, if you let go that thing will chase after us."
Despite what Li Dazhuang said, Zheng Feng showed no intention of letting go and didn’t answer him, only focused on dragging him forward as they ran.
If this went on, maybe ’that thing’ wouldn’t even need to chase them down; Li Dazhuang might just drop dead.
So, he steeled his heart and bit Zheng Feng’s hand hard, making Zheng Feng let go, and then he started running back.
Now, he couldn’t trust either of his uncles; being on his own was the safest.
Zheng Feng cursed and chased after Li Dazhuang once again.
After running for a while, an exhausted Li Dazhuang was about to exit the alley and reach a more crowded area when suddenly a figure emerged, blocking his way back.
"Why are you running like that, in such a hurry? I’ve come to bring you your wallet," said the man.
He was neatly dressed, spotless, and smiling—it was the Zheng Feng who had said he would follow out earlier.
"Da Zhuang, don’t get near him, he’s a monster!" yelled a haggard and somewhat manic Zheng Feng from behind.
The neat Zheng Feng seemed not to hear the frantic words, smilingly said, "Da Zhuang, why do you look as if you’ve seen a ghost? You’re so grown up, yet you still have such a small courage."
Li Dazhuang, pointing at the deranged Zheng Feng, screamed in a twisted tone, "There, there... there’s someone who looks exactly like you, can’t you see him?"
The neat Zheng Feng looked carefully but seemed to see nothing, and he said to Li Dazhuang with confusion, "It’s just us two here, how could there be another person who looks like me? You were the one talking about finding me a psychologist, maybe it’s you who has the problem."
Just the two of us...
Li Dazhuang covered his head, now on the verge of collapse, tears and snot streaming.
He could no longer tell which was real and which was fake.
But he had to make a choice; if he chose wrong, he would pay the price.
In the end, Li Dazhuang chose to walk toward the neat Zheng Feng, because the disheveled Zheng Feng felt too frightening just now.
And now, he was beginning to suspect that the haggard Zheng Feng didn’t exist at all, that he was a figment of his imagination, perhaps a symptom of his own psychological issues.
Ever since the fire at the Furong River Amusement Park, he had felt that his memory was odd, with strange images flashing through his mind. Maybe that’s why he thought something was wrong with his uncle.
The more he thought this way, the more relaxed Li Dazhuang felt. Even if he had truly gone mad, what of it? At least there wouldn’t be two uncles to face...
The neat Zheng Feng’s face broke into a smile; he waited for Li Dazhuang to come closer, planning to give him a surprise.
However, just then, Li Dazhuang suddenly remembered, would he remain as calm as the neat Zheng Feng if he faced a crazy uncle?
Absolutely not!
And moreover, after being dragged so far by the disheveled Zheng Feng, how could the neat Zheng Feng know where he was and manage to arrive just in time?
Whether the haggard Zheng Feng had issues, he was unsure, but this tidy Zheng Feng, there must certainly be something wrong with him!
On either side of the pitch-dark alley stood a Zheng Feng, silently watching Li Dazhuang, trapping him, unable to escape.
Li Dazhuang slowly squatted down, his brain feeling as if it was about to explode, desperation flooding his thoughts.
"Since you don’t want to choose either of us, why not choose me?"
Another voice came from above him, but Li Dazhuang hardly reacted, perhaps because he had already been scared to the limit.
He blankly raised his head, only to discover someone sitting on the dimly lit lamp behind him.
This person was dressed in a white robe, swinging their feet cheerfully, a face of irreverent amusement plastered with a smile.
It was Wen Wen!
