Chapter 206: Chapter 304: Plague Doctor
Wen Wen rubbed his head in frustration. He had listened to Li Dazhuang’s narration, a tremulous spiel with no useful substance.
To put it bluntly, he had no rock-solid proof that his uncle’s matter was related to supernatural powers.
"This is going to be difficult for you. You don’t know what’s wrong with your uncle, but you’re sure there’s something wrong?"
"Nowadays, the principle is to presume innocence. Mere suspicion is useless."
Li Dazhuang gave a bitter smile. He didn’t want it to be this way either, but aside from the scene where his uncle killed the rat, he truly hadn’t discovered any evidence of abnormality.
In front of him or anyone else, his uncle remained the same person he always was, showing no signs of odd behavior.
What made him determined to seek Wen Wen’s help was the look he once caught in his uncle’s eyes.
That gaze wasn’t about looking at a person, but at food!
"Forget it, no matter what, I’ve got to meet your uncle. I can’t make up my mind without seeing for myself."
Actually, Wen Wen was rather inclined to believe Li Dazhuang, mostly because he knew Li Dazhuang to be rather unlucky...
Therefore, Wen Wen decided to see Li Dazhuang’s uncle, Zheng Feng, for himself.
However, he couldn’t just go over as he was. It was not possible to go straight there and announce he was a Demon Hunter. So, he decided to disguise himself a little.
He told Li Dazhuang to wait and headed to a pharmacy open 24 hours to buy a stethoscope to hang around his neck and inexplicably produced a pair of glasses from somewhere.
Paired with his white lab coat, at a glance, he really did look somewhat like a doctor.
Lastly, he took out a small pouch and rummaged through it, soon finding a psychologist’s ID badge to hang around his neck.
When working as a private detective, he would occasionally need to disguise himself, and the identity of a psychologist made it easier to gain the trust of criminals with mental issues. Therefore, Wen Wen always kept fake IDs on hand.
Um...
It wasn’t just a psychologist, his bag contained IDs for a police officer, a university professor, a Federation agent, a military officer... and so on, a whole collection of credentials.
This was a necessity for a detective... maybe.
"Let’s go, take me to see your uncle," Wen Wen, having completed his transformation, said to Li Dazhuang.
Li Dazhuang, witnessing Wen Wen’s rapid metamorphosis into a man of drastically different demeanor, could not help but gape. You’re practically performing a magic transformation show.
"What are you spacing out for? Lead the way."
Arriving at the doorstep of Zheng Feng’s home, Wen Wen knocked politely. After several knocks with no response, Wen Wen’s eyebrow twitched, and he began to knock harder, ready to dismantle the door if it didn’t open within a minute.
Hearing the thumping sound, Li Dazhuang, shivering behind Wen Wen, worried that bringing him here might harm his uncle.
"I’m coming, what’s the matter, trying to tear the house down?"
Zheng Feng opened the door, looking displeased at the authoritative-looking Wen Wen and the sheepishly grinning Li Dazhuang.
"Da Zhuang, what are you trying to do?"
"Uh... Uncle, this is the new psychologist I found for you, Wen..." Li Dazhuang said in a meek voice.
Zheng Feng scowled deeply, speaking displeasedly, "Do I look like I need you to find me a psychologist? And if you’re going to find one, at least find someone who looks professional. This man seems even more hot-headed than me."
Wen Wen stepped forward in front of Li Dazhuang, speaking with righteous conviction, "Sir, you may question my character, but you cannot question my professional integrity."
"I have treated many patients with severe psychological issues. After my treatments, none of them harmed others again. Instead, they studied together and made progress together."
Mr. Wen wasn’t lying, what he referred to as his patients were indeed the monsters within his sanctuary.
They truly were learning together, making progress, and wishing they could strangle Mr. Wen...
Seeing Mr. Wen’s expression, Zheng Feng hesitated, thinking he might have hurt Mr. Wen’s feelings.
But Mr. Wen took advantage of his momentary distraction to slip into his house, brazenly making himself comfortable on the sofa.
Since the man had already entered, Zheng Feng didn’t try to expel him anymore and sat opposite Mr. Wen, intending to deal with him swiftly.
"Doctor Wen, let’s get straight to the point, shall we? I really don’t have a mental illness, nor do I need your help. You can leave now," he said.
Mr. Wen didn’t respond, his nostrils flaring slightly, detecting a scent of blood in the room, human blood!
So, he stood up and said, "That smells delicious."
Then, he walked over to the kitchen, stopped at the doorway, and peered inside, his pupils suddenly constricting.
Zheng Feng quickly followed Mr. Wen and said, "Mr. Wen, please be mindful, this is my home."
He looked quite displeased, questioning if this so-called Doctor Wen was professional at all; he might as well call him Plague Doctor instead.
"My apologies, after taking on this child’s commission, I came straight here without having dinner..."
Li Dazhuang curled his lip, thinking it was a dubious claim, as when they had first met, this man reeked of alcohol.
Relieved, Zheng Feng said, "This is deer bone soup I’ve stewed. Would you like to try it?"
"No, no, no, during treatment, I don’t take anything from my patients, not a needle nor a thread."
Mr. Wen declined gracefully, saying he would never consume food of unknown origin while handling a case that might involve supernatural events.
Still, the soup did have an odd aroma, unlike typical pork, beef, or mutton.
If it was deer bone, it would be plausible, considering Mr. Wen had never eaten deer meat before.
He resumed his seat on the sofa and spoke with the calm tone often used by psychologists on TV: "Regardless, I’m here to treat you. Please, tell me your situation."
He secretly snapped his fingers, invoking the power of the Guile Tree Spirit, and if Zheng Feng were a perfectly ordinary person, he wouldn’t now refuse Mr. Wen’s request.
Sure enough, Zheng Feng’s tone softened, and he truly placed himself in the role of a patient, starting to recount his story to Mr. Wen.
"It began two months ago when I was returning home in a thick fog and accidentally collided with something, losing consciousness."
Seeing his cooperation, Mr. Wen considered him less of a suspect, but if the Guile Tree Spirit’s power were ineffective, it would prove Zheng Feng was not an ordinary person.
However, if the Guile Tree Spirit’s power did take effect, it couldn’t establish there was no issue, after all, he could be pretending.
"Could you describe what the fog was like?" Mr. Wen asked, squinting his eyes.
Zheng Feng paused, unsure why Mr. Wen would be interested in an ordinary fog.
"It was very dark that night, and I couldn’t see clearly, but it seemed like there was something drifting in the dense fog. Furong River’s air really needs to be addressed," he said.
"It was quite frightening, so I hurried along and that’s when I hit something. By the time I woke up, the fog had already cleared."
Mr. Wen’s eyes gleamed for a moment, something drifting in the fog...
Could it be the Gray Mist Layer?
