Carrying a Jurassic on me -
Chapter 980 - 527
Chapter 980: 527
"Boss Yan, busy again? Sorry to disturb you, but I wanted to ask, are you free this morning? I’d like to come over to discuss something." Just as they say Cao Cao and Cao Cao arrives, the voice on the phone was Xiao Qin, who had just left yesterday.
"Oh, so the tiger is loaded on the truck, huh?" Yan Fei asked, barely hiding his impatience. "It’s not about to arrive already, is it?"
There was a moment’s hesitation from Xiao Qin on the other end before he said with a pleading tone, "Well, there’s been a bit of an accident on this end, better I tell you in person when I get there! I’ll be able to make it in an hour and a half, is that ok?"
Yan Fei had a fairly good impression of Xiao Qin from yesterday, but today’s call was so inconvenient that he didn’t bother asking more, "Alright, give me a call when you get to our bridge, I’m not sure where I’ll be at that time. That’s it, I’ve got other things to deal with, hanging up now."
He casually hung up the phone and tossed it aside, then, like a hungry tiger rushing out of its cage, he pounced on Xu Xiaoyan, who was seizing the opportunity to hurriedly put on her clothes.
Young men and women who hadn’t tasted the forbidden fruit were especially fond of such contact tinged with taboo, truly like glue and unable to stop themselves. On one side, a person fierce as a wolf or a tiger, and on the other, someone halfway between resisting and accommodating, so much so that when the phone rang again, the two of them realized that the hour had passed all too quickly.
After a series of vague affirmations over the phone, they wrapped themselves up in their desire once more, before finally they started to hastily dress and get out of bed in a frantic scramble.
When Xiao Qin stepped out of the car with a look of distress, Yan Fei was already neatly dressed and standing at the door waiting, "What exactly happened? It’s not that your people have caused some kind of trouble again, is it?"
Xiao Qin’s expression flickered uncertainly for a moment before he said, "This time it wasn’t someone stirring up trouble on purpose, it’s just that, well, it’s hard to explain. The cage we switched the tiger into was substandard, we didn’t tranquilize it, and one of the workers got too close and got injured by the tiger..."
It’s no wonder Xiao Qin was embarrassed to say it outright; it was indeed a bit shameful and difficult to articulate.
Everyone had oversimplified the task at hand; seeing the tiger every day in the park, it became routine, and they started to think it was no big deal. After all, the tiger only looked a bit bigger than a large dog, was always underfed, and lacked energy, hanging around looking as wilted as under-watered crops.
So when switching cages for the tiger, they didn’t even bother with a tranquilizer, just placed the cage at the entrance, lured the tiger in with meat, then bang—the lock fell into place, and they thought all was well.
The tiger had been born and raised in another zoo before coming to Wan City Zoo. It had a relatively mild disposition and lay quietly once inside the cage, without causing trouble.
What everyone had overlooked was that the space at the zoo was a bit tight, and the backup cage hadn’t been used for so long that parts of it were worn, making it somewhat unprofessional.
As they were carrying it to the main entrance, there were a few steps to navigate. The workers made a mistake, nearly sending the cage tumbling down the steps.
The tiger was startled by the sudden jolt, and just at that moment, a worker directing the operation rushed to stabilize the cage. Needless to say, the startled tiger swiped through the cage at him with its paw.
The workers were all wearing protective gear, and though it wasn’t especially professional, it was thick enough to provide some defense. Even if the tiger struck out, the iron mesh of the cage wasn’t just for show—at least for the most part.
It was just the worker’s bad luck that the part of the mesh closest to him was rusted. When the tiger swiped in alarm, the mesh tore open like a broken fishing net, and its paw "contacted" the worker.
Of course, every cloud has a silver lining. The incident proved that making the workers wear an extra layer of "protective gear" was essential. After all, regular clothes would offer no protection against a tiger’s claws.
Although the injured worker wasn’t seriously hurt, the incident reminded everyone that the tiger was being transported for mating purposes, and perhaps our preparations for what to do afterward had been insufficient.
It wasn’t long before everyone agreed that the tiger couldn’t be sent over after all.
Based on Xiao Qin’s description, Yan Fei’s tiger was like a household dog, easily restrained with just a chain. Now, sending this tiger over in a rush without even preparing tranquilizers, who would dare to put a chain on it once it arrived?
And seeing this dispirited tiger all day, everyone was a bit worried. Once they got there, they’d heard that the place didn’t even have any protective measures, what would they do if something actually happened?
There’s a saying, "ask not for achievements, but for an absence of mistakes." The more they thought about it, the less they dared to transport the tiger carelessly.
They couldn’t really interfere with how Yan Fei raised his tigers, but once the tigers from their zoo were transported out, if any issues arose, everyone would be responsible.
Hearing Xiao Qin stumble through the explanation of the events, Yan Fei just laughed, "You guys... Aren’t you just idly worrying about nothing? I already told you that all you need to do is bring the tiger over; leave the rest to me. How many fierce animals does your entire zoo have? Can they even compare to what I have here?"
With his face already flush with shame, Yan Fei’s words made Xiao Qin’s face turn even redder.
Seeing this, Yan Fei didn’t feel it right to say more, so he asked, "So why are you here now? What are you planning to do about this situation?"
"The zoo’s idea is to have you deliver the tiger. After all, we have a tiger enclosure, which would be more convenient," Xiao Qin said meekly, and then quickly added, "Don’t worry, the zoo won’t let you do it for nothing. There’s a hardship fee; we’ll give you two thousand yuan for making the trip, just to make sure you’re not working for free."
Two thousand yuan?
Yan Fei opened his mouth, looking at Xiao Qin’s anxious face, and felt a bit too embarrassed to say what was on his mind.
Truth be told, two thousand yuan wasn’t a small sum, equating to three or four times the salary of zoo staff. But the amount also depended on who you were talking to. Telling someone worth tens of millions to walk the tiger over and offering two thousand yuan as a hardship fee did feel a bit like ignoring the value of their time.
No matter how well or poorly the zoo managed other matters, at least they hadn’t sent the wrong person this time. If they’d sent an old pro who could’ve laid out a well-spun tale of apparent profound understanding, given Yan Fei’s temperament, the deal would’ve definitely fallen through.
But bring someone Yan Fei considered to be honest, and he couldn’t bring himself to be too hard on them. For him, leading a tiger on a walk really wasn’t such a big deal, perhaps a bit showy but nothing more.
After a moment’s thought, he said, "Alright, give me the two thousand yuan. Mosquito legs are small, but they’re still flesh. It’d be foolish to pass up free money. By the way, remember to pay for the road toll later. We’ll cover some gas money, but don’t expect me to foot the toll as well."
Upon hearing his agreement, Xiao Qin’s face broke into a big smile, but his expression quickly turned puzzled, "Some gas money? What do you mean?"
Yan Fei was also taken aback, "My car can’t move without fuel, can it? Have you ever seen a car that doesn’t burn gas?"
"Your car?" It finally dawned on Xiao Qin. "No need, no need, our zoo has arranged transportation. It’s already waiting; as soon as you agree, I’ll call them, and they’ll be here in just over an hour. We’d already agreed on this before, and it’s embarrassing enough for us to back out now; we can’t ask you to spend more. Oh, can I use your old-school mobile phone to make the call? The vehicle will arrive in an hour."
"Wait here, I left my phone inside the house," he said, darting into the house and slamming the door shut tight.
Then he paused upon seeing the situation inside, "Hey, aren’t you already dressed? Why aren’t you going out?"
Inside, Xu Xiaoyan was sitting on the bed, neatly dressed. When she saw him fumbling with the door, she felt a bit guilty, "There’s a stranger outside. It’d look bad if they saw that I’m just getting up now!"
Yan Fei couldn’t help but laugh, "Just go out. Who’s going to know you just got up? My phone is thrown on the bed; hand it to me. Xiao Qin needs to use it to call for the vehicle, we’ll take the tiger over this afternoon."
"It’s on the nightstand, grab it yourself." The girl, feeling guilty as if she’d done something wrong, thought his point made some sense. Standing up, she prepared to follow him out but then stopped, "You go out first, I’ll come out in a bit."
This girl must be really self-conscious!
