Chapter 914: Chapter 501: Not Alone

Yan Fei had to explain to his wife, or rather, deal with her indignant outburst, just as the two guests who had just left were starting to feel rather depressed.

Driving straight to the Yellow River not far outside the city, they took an exit near the bridge, then started to follow the directions on the note he had written.

At some point, the road ahead just ended. It wasn’t exactly true that there was no path; there was always a small trail to walk on, but it wasn’t passable by car.

They got out of the car and continued on foot, the younger man still grappling with Yan Fei’s actions: "Uncle Wang, I can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong. Doesn’t this count as a heroic breach of law? He..."

"What about him?" The middle-aged man interrupted. "While it’s true that using martial skills to break the law is not right, there’s also a phrase that goes ’an act of chivalry’. His record is very clear. Do you think he would have done this if those people hadn’t provoked him first?"

"But that he reacted this way after being provoked..." The younger man faltered. "Anyway, I just feel that it’s quite inappropriate!"

"Inappropriate or not, it’s already done!" The middle-aged man said with a laugh, patting his shoulder. "He’s quite a well-known figure in the local area now, a boss earning tens of millions a year, and he regards millions in cash as ill-gotten gains and won’t take a penny of it. That could be considered the spirit of chivalry, right? Have you ever seen any illegal or disorderly actions in those documents about him?"

Seeing the young man reflect, the middle-aged man waited before continuing: "None, right? Not only that, but hasn’t he done quite a few things that could be regarded as eliminating harm for the people? Although some methods might be excessive, he’s still a young man, even younger than you, so a bit of temper is normal. If he were really capable of handling everything with perfect restraint, then we would need to be more careful."

"As for what he will do in the future, his business will grow, and the business he’s in, I’ve looked at it, probably has some little secrets; haven’t you seen it attracting the attention of foreigners? His business seems to be making money faster than theft; unless he goes completely out of his mind, when his family’s business grows large, he’s certainly not going to behave outrageously. Think about it, if you had such a profitable business, would you get involved in other things?"

The young man seemed to muse over this. Clearly, what the middle-aged man had said was somewhat different from what he truly felt. Obviously, he said one thing to the young man, but what he thought inside was something only he knew.

After a while, the young man couldn’t hold back any longer: "Those Japanese are really impressive. We didn’t notice anything ourselves, but they spotted Boss Yan first. So cunning! But Uncle Wang, do you think that bizarre building collapse was caused by Boss Yan?"

"Whether it was or not, what’s the difference? The ones who died were all conniving Japanese, they died in vain," said the middle-aged man indifferently. "The injured one was a traitor; he got what he deserved!"

The young man couldn’t help but smile: "I wouldn’t have guessed you’re an Angry Youth, Uncle Wang."

Uncle Wang’s usually calm expression showed a rare hint of dissatisfaction: "Angry Youth? Has that term become outdated? It hasn’t been many years since the atrocities. How many mass graves appeared across the nation, with tens of thousands of corpses in Jinling City, and in those martyrs’ cemeteries, the countless unmarked graves of unknown heroes, are they all forgotten by the younger generation now?"

After pausing, he spoke each word deliberately: "Forgetting history means betrayal! There are things that we may not talk about, but we must still remember them in our hearts."

The young man fell silent.

It had only been a few generations. The elders who had witnessed those events still break into tears when they recall those days. Yet some people had indeed forgotten, just as Uncle Wang had said!

There are things that should not be forgotten. The slogans of friendship have been chanted for so long that they can make people truly forget hatred. They even let people forget that there are still surviving ’comfort women’ around.

Slogans need to be shouted, but there are things that really need to be remembered.

Naughty children who forget the pain once their wounds have healed are often the ones who get hurt the most.

"We’re here, that should be the place. Three willow trees by the riverside, followed by a small forest in the back. All poplar trees, .counting from this side, twenty-three in a row!" Perhaps feeling the atmosphere between them was somewhat heavy, the middle-aged man pointed out the landmarks to the young man as they came into view.

The young man looked up, his eyes somewhat bewildered: "Uncle Wang, you really have keen eyesight. I can barely see it clearly; looks like I really need to get glasses."

The middle-aged man smiled, patting his shoulder: "Let’s go! We still have a way to go!"

Indeed, there was a way to go; with nothing in the fields, one could see exceptionally far from where they stood.

As they walked, they kept looking around, and as they got closer, they became even more certain that this was their destination. Upon this realization, the two, already tired from their journey, breathed a sigh of relief.

The young man complained: "Isn’t this just giving us a hard time? Why haven’t the others arrived yet?"

"They should be here soon, don’t worry," the middle-aged man reassured him as he took out a pack of cigarettes, lit one, and led the way. "Let’s keep going; we’ll rest when we get there. We’ll have to carry things later, and these old arms and legs of mine need some exercise too!"

"Uncle Wang, you really should smoke less for the sake of your health!" the young man advised, following him, probably aware it was a futile effort, then continued, "Actually, what I said earlier, it wasn’t that I had any objections to Boss Yan. It’s just that he seems too omnipotent, managing to gather so much evidence without leaving a trace. If he decided to do something else, who could stop him?"
