Chapter 878: Chapter 489: Trouble Without Resistance
"Xiao Fei, take it easy on the road, and remember to come visit us next time you’re here!" Bai Xiaobin was enthusiastically waving goodbye to Yan Fei next to the bus stop sign opposite the Provincial City Zoo.
The warmth of his gesture was even more reluctant than Xu Xiaoyan standing beside him.
It was the third day of the National Day holiday, and Yan Fei finally couldn’t delay any longer—he had to return to Sancha River.
For two days, a group of friends had gathered to have fun together, but the most helpless among them was Yan Fei. The places around Provincial City that were worth visiting had all been explored more than once, especially since Miss Xu Xiaoyan began attending university.
Of course, now everyone was together just for the lively atmosphere; revisiting the same places didn’t matter—nobody would permanently avoid a place after only going there twice.
However, the problem was that Bai Xiaobin was just a tad too enthusiastic.
It was somewhat humorous when the first girl of Xu family returned home on the first day, she specifically advised him. In effect, she said that Boss Yan was young but had an unpredictable temper and was skilled in Kung Fu—arrogant and difficult to get along with. Of course, that wasn’t exactly how she put it, but the implication was clear. Basically, she advised the obedient child-like Bai Xiaobin to keep a certain distance from someone like Boss Yan.
The first girl of Xu family wasn’t wrong in her thinking; the two of them seemed like completely different types of people. Bai Xiaobin was a bit childish, spoke without a filter, and occasionally bragged.
If he inadvertently upset Boss Yan, who had a temper, it would be quite unpleasant. In fact, even if they really became relatives, given the way their relationship was developing, these two wouldn’t have much to do with each other in the future. At most, they’d only gather to make merry during holidays and festivals.
But she overlooked the immaturity of her boyfriend. When he heard her account, Bai Xiaobin’s interest in Boss Yan’s ’life experience’ grew immensely. During the two days of fun, he constantly pestered Yan Fei with questions.
This was similar to how things were at school: good students looked down on the poor students for not taking their studies seriously, yet sometimes they couldn’t help but envy the latter’s ’carefree ways’. Poor students might outwardly scorn those show-off good students in front of teachers, but no one really knew what they thought deep inside. Perhaps they were jealous of the good students’ academic achievements, envious to death!
Bai Xiaobin was the obedient type of student, someone who normally would have little in common with someone like Yan Sanfen. But after hearing a few of Boss Yan’s ’glorious deeds’ from the first girl of Xu family, his curiosity was piqued! Whenever he saw Boss Yan, he couldn’t help but come over to ask a couple of questions.
Xu Xiaoyan often went home during the summer vacation, and it was inevitable for the family to chat about Yan Fei. Xu Xiaoyan didn’t have much to say, for bringing up business matters could seem like boasting. They were just making idle chatter among family; discussing things others hadn’t experienced, like money earned, seemed pointless.
So, the stories usually revolved around Yan Sanfen infiltrating the enemy, learning to drive with a driver who smuggled crude oil, and wiping out those stealing and transporting the oil; or assisting patrols in capturing smugglers, thus acquiring a few tigers, golden eagles, and other wild animals.
When these incidents first occurred, Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan covered them up as much as possible; if they couldn’t, they’d make it sound as trivial as going out to buy soy sauce—basically, these matters were presented as if they involved no risk at all. The bad guys, upon hearing that he represented the forces of justice coming to capture criminals, would immediately surrender nicely, and the cooperation was outstanding.
But as time went on, the incidents became less recent, and there was less need to keep them secret. Sometimes, when Yan Fei chatted with the girl, the most she would do upon hearing about them was punch him a couple of times as punishment for the initial secrecy.
Many of these stories had already been told to tatters in Sancha River during casual conversations, with a myriad of versions existing. Everyone just listened without much surprise. From the time Boss Yan started catching a few thieves to nabbing several big robbers and busting an oil-stealing ring, nothing seemed extraordinary anymore. After all, Boss Yan was deemed capable and unstoppable, both brave and cunning—what couldn’t he achieve?
However, to someone who had always been a good child, these stories felt impossibly rich and thrilling. In Bai Xiaobin’s mind, he had positioned Boss Yan on the level of warriors like Yan Nantian—uttering the name would make heroes from all the mountains and rivers raise a thumbs up in approval, and even the righteous bandits amongst the white mountains and black waters would hasten to give him a wide berth.
As a result, Yan Fei felt terribly disheartened; even though he might not care about giving face to the first girl of Xu family, his wife was there by his side, and he had to endure any displeasure that arose! Fortunately, Bai Xiaobin was easy to fool—believing whatever was said, which allowed Yan Fei to keep his patience.
As for the reason he had to return to Sancha River so soon, it really had nothing to do with Bai Xiaobin.
He thought there wouldn’t be any issues at home during the National Day holiday, but on the very first day, he lost any semblance of peace. That day, he received a pager message from Heizi, saying that several people had come to the cattle farm looking to discuss supply issues.
Just buying beef wasn’t a problem, but these visitors seemed to have ill intentions. Yan Fei found a moment to call Heizi the day before to inquire about the specifics.
It appeared that the leader of the visitors hadn’t said anything particularly harsh, but two of his subordinates were openly impolite. They were even accompanied by officials from the city tax and business administration, implying that there was some strong-arm trading at play.
