Chapter 852: Chapter 474: A Dime Mulberry Son
Looking at the sun-drenched, bleached pavement in the middle of the street, people sheltering under the trees on the sidewalks felt exceptionally refreshed and clear-headed.
Coming out of the hotel lobby, Miss Xu Xiaoyan first laughed heartily without a care, and even mimicked the way the injured man struggled to speak, giggling foolishly for a while.
However, she started to worry after not walking far, "Yan Xiaofei, do you think he’ll come after us once he comes to his senses?"
Yan Fei dismissed such concerns, "Why would he come after me? He was the one looking for trouble and insulting others – that’s his own problem. I’m already being kind by not holding him accountable. Besides, who saw me touch him?"
The hotels in Provincial City might be high-end, but they hadn’t reached the level of installing ’sneak-peek heads’ everywhere—’sneak-peek heads’ was Yan Fei’s nickname for surveillance cameras.
A trip to Japan indeed taught him some useful new knowledge, such as understanding what surveillance was—a presently quite ’high-tech’ thing that was crucial for someone like him who could ’disappear’ at any moment and occasionally transform into a flying bird.
As for the incident just now, Yan Fei was no longer angry.
The world is like this, a person walks down the street, not provoking anyone, and yet might still get bitten by a mad dog that springs out of nowhere. If the bitten person has no power, they just have to accept the loss silently. But if the bitten one is capable of knocking out a few of the dog’s teeth, why should they tolerate such a mad dog? At the least, by knocking out some teeth of that mad dog, you reduce future bites and indirectly benefit society.
The girl, hearing Yan Fei’s righteous words, held back what she was about to say.
Seeing her hesitate to speak, Yan Fei simply suggested, "It’s still early. The forest park is not far ahead. Why don’t we go have some fun there before heading back?"
The forest park in Provincial City was originally a forest farm established in the early years after the founding of the country to prevent wind erosion and for afforestation. It had been converted into a park just four or five years ago, with many of its sceneries still quite primitive and not many frills. It wasn’t very bustling yet, but it had the advantage of being serene.
Of course, for the frugal Miss Xu Xiaoyan, the appeal lay in the park’s vastness, the abundance of places to wander, and the fewer opportunities to spend money, which was a significant advantage.
On the periphery, there were some people from nearby areas enjoying the cool air, but as the two went deeper, they encountered fewer and fewer people. Noting the lesser crowd, Yan Fei gradually moved closer to the girl, eventually reaching out to hold her hand.
The forest was tranquil, the noise of the cicadas only enhancing the quietude, and the birds’ songs adding to the solitude.
Because it had originally been a forest farm, there were quite a few birds living there. Listening to the birds and watching the figures hopping through the trees, the girl soon forgot the unpleasantness of before, joyfully wandering about with Yan Fei.
Actually, this was the best time for the forest park. In a few years, once the nearby commercial districts developed, the number of visitors would rise, and the park would start to commercialize. If it were twenty years later, due to rising property prices, this forest park spread over thousands of acres in the city would become too valuable and be completely flattened.
As Yan Fei held her hand and they walked along, the girl noticed him making faces toward a certain spot. Following his gaze into the woods, she suddenly blushed.
Clearly, they weren’t the only ones who knew about this intimate environment. Deep in the woods, a young man and woman were obliviously locked in an embrace. They hadn’t noticed anyone approaching, and it seemed that although they had not yet been bold enough to use the sky as a blanket and the ground as a bed, transforming into a pair of Mandarin ducks right there and then, it could be just a matter of time.
With a flushed face, the girl pulled Yan Fei away toward another spot, only to turn around and see him smirking. Recalling the possibility of taking a different path earlier, where she had intended to follow the stone pathway up to a higher spot, it was this rascal who had suggested they go this way. She quickly caught on, "Yan Xiaofei, aren’t you naughty? Did you know about this place beforehand?"
"Hahaha..." Yan Fei laughed loudly, his attempt to cover up the truth making it all too apparent. "I honestly had no idea."
This was the very picture of protesting too much!
When the girl heard his loud laughter, she glanced back in that direction. Her eyesight was sharp enough to see that those two were swiftly parting, with the woman seeming to be adjusting her clothing.
"Hmph!" Annoyed, the girl gave the mischievous guy a few hard twists.
"Ow ow ow... that hurts..." Yan Fei exaggerated his display of pain, grimacing as if it really did.
After walking a good distance, the girl’s blushing face finally returned to normal. "You deserve the pain, hmph!"
"Yeah, I deserve it!" Yan Fei nodded repeatedly. "Shall we find a place to sit down then?"
The girl immediately saw through his obvious intentions, recognizing the shameless nature of his proposal, "In your dreams..."
Unfortunately, there are some things that one can pick up without any formal instruction—like Yan Sanfen’s persistent badgering. He whined and coaxed the girl with sweet words and, within moments, he had charmed her into the woods.
After some time, the girl’s voice echoed from deep within the forest, "Oh no, Yunyun and the others said they’d come over for dinner tonight. We better hurry, or we’ll be late! What if they go looking for us and can’t find us?"
"It’s fine. We’ll take a taxi back. It’s quicker than the bus, and we’ll make it in time," Yan Fei’s voice rang out.
Some time later, the two of them emerged from the woods. Yet their expressions were entirely different—one was smug and satisfied, while the other followed behind with a flushed face, too embarrassed to lift her head.
By the time they returned home, Ji Yunyun and Zhou Peipei had already been waiting a while. They had thought the two were busy with registration until this point. However, when they opened the door, the sharp-eyed Ji Yunyun suddenly exclaimed with surprise, "No way! Is the registration place in some out-of-the-way spot? It couldn’t possibly be in the middle of nowhere, could it?"
The guilt-ridden Miss Xu Xiaoyan immediately answered, "What middle of nowhere? It was inside a hotel. They were organizing a big conference; how could they possibly choose an obscure location?"
Zhou Peipei also noticed what Ji Yunyun had seen, her face twisting into a derisive smile, "Oh, really? Do they grow wild grass inside the hotel? Is it a hotel located in a primeval forest? Otherwise, why have the two of you come back all dusty and disheveled?"
The moment one of the girls subconsciously glanced down at her clothes, Zhou Peipei couldn’t maintain her sneer anymore. She and Ji Yunyun wrapped their arms around each other, laughing so hard they couldn’t stand straight.
Only then did Xu Xiaoyan realize she had been played and, fuming, pretended to hit them both. Ji Yunyun, who was struggling for breath from laughter, said, "You two had us waiting at the door for nearly twenty minutes, and now you want to hit someone? Even if you kept us waiting, the least you could do was clean up any evidence before coming back! Hero Yan, you’re showing off the mulberry seeds on your clothes. Are you flaunting that you both went off to your own little sweet world?"
When Xu Xiaoyan turned to look, it was indeed true. Evidently, Yan Sanfen had been too proud to shake off the dirt when he came back, and what was even more telling was the presence of a mulberry seed that he’d brought back on his clothes.
Because of that mulberry seed, the girl was the butt of jokes by those two women until dinner was ready. It could truly be said that the tragedy was sparked by a single mulberry seed...
Luckily, the girl still had control over the cutlery, or there was no telling how much longer those two would have laughed at her!
After dinner, Yan Fei stood up to tidy up a bit, "I better hurry back and bring over the photos. Tomorrow is the last day, and I need to get the photos to them quickly so they can make the promotional materials."
The two women knew that business was important and had planned to take their leave, but Yan Fei had no intention of buying a ticket or taking the bus, so she quickly stopped them, "No need, no need. You two keep playing! I run back and forth often; no need for anyone to send me off."
Yan Fei flew all the way back to Sancha River and then paused, considering that going down now might not be right. She had mentioned going for registration in the afternoon, and now she was already home. Normally, the journey by bus wouldn’t be this quick. So she simply patrolled the airspace around, then headed straight into the dinosaur world for some fun.
Once there, she first checked on the two kidnappers, only to find that now there was only one left. The other, who had been injured and uncared for, eventually couldn’t hold on to life. However, that kind of person’s death was no loss; one less didn’t matter.
The one still alive had been frightened and had seemed calm at the time, but now he had become exceptionally skittish, trembling at the slightest rustle. When Yan Fei appeared at the cave, he immediately scurried into a corner, clutching his head and shivering.
Yan Fei was puzzled; the man had been fine during the wee hours interrogation, so how had he turned out this way after just a day?
Such questions, however, were destined to go unanswered. No one knows how a person might react after being traumatized. Maybe at the time, he had thought he was dreaming? Now that he was awake, with his only companion turned into a corpse, he had become like a terrified bird.
After some thought, Yan Fei decided to take him to the grassy valley—now, with this slightly off-kilter individual, there were six people there.
Seeing the man scream at the sight of the black cattle, calling them monsters, Yan Fei instructed No.1 and No.2 Coolies, "This guy comes from a big city, from Hong Kong, and committed the same kind of crime as you two did. However, he took a stroll among a group of dinosaurs, and now he’s a bit unstable. If he gets better and can work, let him do something; if he doesn’t get better... then just throw him out!"
Although the valley was sealed off, there was still a place to take care of someone—originally, there was a small river flowing out from the valley. Yan Fei wasn’t foolish enough to block the river to seal off the valley entrance; the chaotic space underneath was left untouched, and the small river was unaffected.
No sooner had she finished speaking than the trembling man shouted out, "I’ll work, I’ll work, just don’t throw me out..."
Though still shivering, he rushed forward to take a shovel from a Japanese man and warily began cleaning up cow dung.
Yan Fei couldn’t help but laugh, "Well, looks like he’s not too far gone. Let’s leave it at that. If he can work, keep him around; after all, he speaks Mandarin, which is better than the other three. Speaking of which, have they learned our language yet? Tell them to hurry up, and if they don’t get it soon... throw them out as well."
Turning to look at the valley, Yan Fei felt a touch of melancholy. The land here was all cleared and ready to be planted with grass seeds, and soon another batch of seeds would arrive to plant the entire valley.
Now that these cattle had come in, it was a hassle. He didn’t want to build cowsheds here, but these animals were fat and sturdy, bred to be Breeding Bulls, and he couldn’t bring himself to just slaughter them.
