Chapter 797: Chapter 427: The Fake Beggar_1
The matter was simple. That fake mute had undergone ’interrogation’ for two days under Dang Wenzheng and his station mates. Everyone had forgotten the man needed to eat and drink, only focusing on trying all different kinds of interrogation methods, leaving the man utterly exhausted. After all, any ordinary person would not be able to withstand it for two days, even lasting half a day would have them applauded as a ’hero’.
The station was not heavily staffed, but there was a handful of enthusiastic volunteers, unpaid and off the books, waiting to be called upon whenever additional manpower was needed. In short, there was no shortage of people, everyone took turns, no need for breaks.
Just now, a temporary recruit seized the opportunity when the interrogated man was trying to drift off to sleep. He took a gong and struck it beside the man’s ear.
Don’t ask why a police station has such a thing, they genuinely have everything. The gong’s origin was just as simple. In this rural place, there would frequently be sellers of Ancestral Divine Medicine, most of whom went unregulated. But some just took things too far to be endured. Making medicinal concoctions with arbitrary replenishing traditional Chinese medicine, turning them into pills with honey, was one thing, arguably harmless, but cooking this stuff on riverbanks, in clear view of others, was just not right.
So, that’s how a gong ended up in the possession of the police station.
It was a very good gong, it had been there for who knows how long, not even needing a dusting, still working wonders. With a resounding strike, the sleeping fake mute suddenly perked up and blurted out, "Brother Ba!"
"Brother Ba, you parrot! Call him Brother Sen; your Brother Ba is sleeping next door!" The young man who struck the gong, Xiao Sen, laughed at this outburst. The gong rang continuously for quite a while, stopping only when his wrist began to ache. "I can’t do this anymore, I need a break. Let Laoba come and help you out. Be careful, this man is said to be quite cunning. I’ll call someone else over right away."
That being said, he ran next door and woke up a young man who was sleeping, "Laoba, that kid just called you, hurry up!"
The one they were calling Laoba was a cop off the books, he sprang up in an instant. "Who called me?"
Xiao Sen explained the situation, another person in the room who was resting also laughed half awake. "Be quick, the man thinks you’re a spy, this is him asking for a report. You might get an award for this, hurry! The next time we divide the beef, we can use this merit, and Xiao Fei will have to give you two more catties..."
Those who called Yan Fei by the nickname Xiao Fei were close acquaintances, this fellow was Dang Wenzheng. He couldn’t hold up any longer after two exhausting days and came here to rest. It was just a casual conversation, but after he said those words, he turned over, ready to sleep again.
But he couldn’t fall asleep, feeling like he had forgotten something. After a while, he suddenly woke up with a start, muttering to himself, "Damn, could the man be from Japan?"
Everyone else had fallen asleep, no one answered his question. The more he thought about it, the more likely it seemed. He got dressed, lifted the mosquito net, and ran outside to wake up Xiang Changqing. "Old Xiang, do you remember when Xiao Fei said those investors from Japan who came last time were malicious?"
The two discussed for a bit, thinking it unlikely, but on the other hand, if it were true, they’d have quite a problem on their hands.
Sancha River was a backward small town. They’d been living there for over twenty years, and apart from the Japanese they’d seen at cattle farms this year, the only other time they’d seen Japanese were the actors playing roles in movies about the Tunnel war.
Although whenever Japanese were mentioned, it was almost always followed by cursing, they always felt it was something far removed from them.
Dang Wenzheng remembered something else and said to Xiang Changqing, "Old Xiang, do you remember when we began to catch this man? He just stood there playing dumb, and when I was about to handcuff him, I casually mentioned that he was a spy, and that’s when he pushed me and ran."
Xiang Changqing was immediately startled, "A spy? Why didn’t you mention this before?"
"That was just an offhand comment. Isn’t he here snooping around Xiao Fei’s ranch? Regardless of which ranch sent him, isn’t this what spies do?" Dang Wenzheng honestly replied.
In fact, had he not had these suspicions, he would’ve totally forgotten the matter. Foreign spies and the likes were things that were out of the reach of a small-town police officer off the books.
"Let’s go, wake everyone up. I think this man won’t last much longer, let’s all put in a bit more effort. If he really is a spy, then it’s a big deal." Xiang Changqing said as he walked out.
Dang Wenzheng was still rubbing his chin in thought, watching him leave and quickly following. He muttered, "It can’t be, right? Is being a spy worth so little, even our poor place has one..."
After waking everyone up, Xiang Changqing thought for a moment, left some instructions, and summoned Lin Baoguo. When it came to things like these, better safe than sorry. If it were really a foreign spy, a small police station like this could turn into a time bomb, something they certainly could not handle.
When Lin Baoguo and Xiang Changqing came along, they hadn’t even reached the interrogation room yet, but they could already hear the noise inside—people shouting things like ’little devil’ and ’spy’. This was what Xiang Changqing had instructed them to do—to scare the man. If the fake mute was another ranch’s scout, no amount of courage would make him agree to being labelled as a foreign spy. If he was ’framed’ as a spy and still didn’t confess, then there was a high likelihood that it wasn’t ’framing’ at all.
As Lin Baoguo entered, the bunch who were making a racket became somewhat sheepish. The weather was still quite hot in the early hours, let’s forget about being dressed neatly. The group of men didn’t care about appearances, they all felt caught in the act by the station chief, and were uneasy!
Lin Baoguo gave everyone a smile, "You’ve all worked hard the past few days. When Boss Yan comes back, we’ll have to get him to treat everyone!"
The main purpose of saying this was to console everyone. Not getting sleep in this kind of weather, in the middle of the night, was indeed tough on these unprofessional people. It would be his failure as the station chief if he made everyone feel uneasy.
Seeing everyone relax, Lin Baoguo turned to the fake mute and said sternly, "You better think carefully. Everything you’ve suffered so far has been very simple. Now, we suspect that you’re a foreign spy, if you don’t confess, we will resort to harsher methods!"
In reality, it was questionable whether the fake mute could understand him at this point. After enduring so long in the heat, his lips were pale and his eyes were lifeless. He seemed out of it—truth be told, Lin Baoguo was regretting putting pressure on everyone to interrogate him intensely the past two days. The group was desperate, and he felt they had gone too far.
