Chapter 796: 426: There’s a situation_1

"Accountant Xiang, you’re back quite early today?" Xiang Rui had just entered the small courtyard on the women’s bicycle that she had bought when she first got married to Lin Baoguo. She was greeted by a smiling middle-aged woman.

There was a hint of impatience in Xiang Rui’s eyes as she nodded at the woman. "Yes, I’m back to cook for Old Lin!"

Indifference from Xiang Rui didn’t seem to bother the woman, who remained enthusiastic. "Oh, you brought back beef again? The treatment at your work place is truly incomparable."

"Yes!" Xiang Rui had already reached the entrance of the bicycle shed. She parked the bicycle, swiftly locked it, took the key, and picked up the beef. Ignoring the woman, she walked towards her own house.

Inwardly, she felt both annoyed at the woman’s presence and a little smug about it.

That woman was disliked in the courtyard because her husband worked in the Family Planning Bureau and had a small amount of authority. Not only did she take advantage of minor gains, she also publicly treated the courtyard as her own, placing her junk anywhere she pleased, and loved to gossip and spread rumors.

When Director Wang was transferred from the police station a while back, the woman was envious of Lin Baoguo, who became the head unexpectedly. Who knows how much harm she did by speaking ill of the Lin family behind their backs? Moreover, any topic of conversation would invariably lead to comments about her husband being a police station chief. As if Xiang Rui used Lin Baoguo’s position as the chief of the police station to bully her.

Honestly speaking, one of the reasons Xiang Rui disliked working at the Family Planning Bureau was because of this woman, who assumed that since Xiang Rui could work there, she could become an official employee and would eventually need to beg for her favor.

Some people are indeed like this; you don’t necessarily have to be provoked by them to find them annoying. If there’s such a person who constantly flaunts their superiority and yet always positions themselves as the victim in any situation, seeking to gain the upper hand and suppress others, just seeing them is like seeing maggots in a toilet.

However, ever since Xiang Rui stopped working at the Family Planning Bureau, such situations gradually disappeared. This happened because one time, she expressed her dissatisfaction when she saw that woman treating the corridor as her own home and planning to block part of the corner with wooden boards to store honeycomb coal.

Old-style buildings did not have wide corridors. If you block half of it to store honeycomb coal, the space is limited to human traffic only, making it inconvenient to carry items. Let alone if someone needs to move large items upstairs, it would certainly become troublesome. Just imagine, this woman is occupying everyone’s space. Asking her to move the honeycomb coal would make it seem as if you owe her a huge favor. Who would be okay with that?

Upon hearing Xiang Rui voice her discontent, the woman’s defense was as usual, "Your man is the police chief," implying that it gives Xiang Rui a right to say anything. This angered Xiang Rui so much so that she didn’t have a good meal for days until she grumbled to someone about it at the cattle farm.

Following that, Heizi didn’t utter a word before instructing some ruffians to ’accidentally’ step on this woman’s honeycomb coal, throw a dead snake into the shed in her yard (which was a shared space), and have a minor ’casual’ conflict with her son, who was about to get married, on the street.

A series of these incidents reduced the woman’s arrogant demeanor significantly. Some situations are like this, where it’s impossible to reason things out. The majority of people in this courtyard work in various small departments in the rural areas. The woman behaved shamelessly and no one could do anything about her. However, a small time ruffian was able to perfectly solve the problem.

At first, Xiang Rui thought that what Heizi and the others did was rather excessive, and that she would surely leave a bad impression on the neighbors in the courtyard. Little did she expect that after this incident, the ’bullied’ neighbors’ relationship with her family improved significantly.

Unexpectedly, ever since her ’status’ in the courtyard improved, even Lin Baoguo’s work has become much easier - there’s truth in the saying that many hands make light work. Although these neighbors didn’t possess much power, people power is a formidable force!

Upon entering the house with the beef, Lin Baoguo was swaying the child, with the child’s grandmother cooking in the kitchen. Xiang Rui delivered the beef to the kitchen, and the old lady’s face blossomed into a smile, "Oh dear, Xiao Fei has done it again, he got you to bring back beef!"

Xiang Rui smiled and said, "Mom, you forgot. He’s currently showing off his girlfriend in Hong Kong, and he’s not home."

The old lady’s laughter became even brighter, "Right, right, right, silly me. Hong Kong is wonderful, it’s important for them to see the world and make money. It’s so nice of Xiao Fei, he still remembers to get you to bring some beef back home for Xiao Bao while he’s not around..."

Xiang Rui was speechless at the old lady’s self-deception. "Xiao Bao" was the child Lin Baoguo was holding, who couldn’t even walk straight. Could a kid that young eat beef? While Yan Fei was instigating the old woman in favor of Xiang Rui to work at the cattle farm, this seemed to be the excuse the old lady latched onto.

Not only that, but the grandparents of the child in this family had a good impression of the "good kid" who had previously delivered "chicken soup". Now, they were even more supportive of Yan Fei and would not tolerate people talking ill of him - including Lin Baoguo and his wife.

After leaving the kitchen, Xiang Rui quickly forgot about the minor incident and whispered to Lin Baoguo, "Xiao Fei has signed another contract in Hong Kong. He called today to say that we should continue buying cattle at the station!"

Lin Baoguo, cradling his child, pondered for a long time before replying, "He told me about that yesterday. You’re inquiring about the fake mute caught in the station, right? Now he’s talking, but it’s all nonsense. His accent isn’t local, and he insists he came because he saw our news and came to gather information. He’s absolutely unreliable."

Wan City isn’t exactly a developed area, and to be honest, even the locals don’t care for the programs aired on the Wan City Television Station. The dramas aired have been repeated hundreds of times on other channels, and besides the ads, there is nothing else. Moreover, the ads are frighteningly monotone, all selling some sort of medicine — ones for treating crops, or astonishingly miraculous medicine for people to consume.

The locals jokingly say about the TV station, "This station is savvy. With it around, there’s no need to go to a hospital for any illness. Just consume the medicine advertised on it and you’ll guaranteed to recover. If it can’t cure you then you’re certainly doomed. You can even buy the pesticide advertised and drink it, reducing the burden on your family."

Despite the jokes, everyone understands that the problem lies in the outdated technology. The lack of accessible television stations forces people to watch such a shabby station. Even the advertisements are crudely made. All the medicine sellers just find an elder from the village and hand them a script to recite, "I’ve tried many kinds of medicine before, none of them worked. But once I started using so-and-so, the effect was really good!"

The background scene remains the same throughout. A person standing in a field carrying a bucket of medicine, the latter half of the script slightly tweaked. When advertising pesticide, the person would say, "After treating the front, even the seedlings in the back have turned green and grown well. The pests fell away in droves, every one of them dead..."

For medicine intended for human consumption, a minor script change suffices, "I’ve had this chronic condition for years. But after three days of consuming this medicine, my whole body felt much lighter. After half a month, I’m completely cured. Now look, I can even carry a bucket of medicine to treat the crops..."

To simplify, one scene is used for multiple scripts, effectively repurposing the same advertisement for the station. Is it realistic to expect even foreigners to watch such a station? It’s practically a daydream. Besides, there’s no chance of receiving this station from outside!

Of course, it can’t be ruled out that someone might have watched it by chance, but the fake mute can produce several non-local accents. Even a fool could tell there’s something fishy going on.

"There are so many of you at the station, can’t you handle him? It’s almost two days already, and you can’t even get any information out of him? Sometimes you need to stop being so stubborn, let them use some measures if necessary..." Xiang Rui subtly encouraged, her mind no longer on the TV station matters. She had come back to inquire about this issue, and after hearing Lin Baoguo’s explanation, she began to persuade him softly.

Lin Baoguo wryly smiled, "I told you already, can they actually interrogate him properly? I bet they didn’t hesitate to use their methods, otherwise, he’d probably still be pretending to be mute! Now that he’s rambling in various accents, it’s clear he’s trying to stall until we have no choice but to let him go!"

"Don’t release him. Let him try stalling for two months, in the end, he’s just a foreigner." Xiang Rui said fiercely.

What she said was spot on. Whenever the local police caught a thief from the town, even when the thief was released after half a month of detainment, the townsfolk still continued with their chatter. But when it comes to a stranger, regardless of whether he’s a beggar or a fugitive, the chatter only persists for a day, and now nobody even brings it up. In such situations, the police aren’t afraid to detain him. As long as he can hold up, what’s the issue with keeping him for an additional two months? Are they expecting the locals who saw him being captured to come forward and vindicate him?

"That’s the only thing to do. There’s no other way. As long as he can endure." Lin Baoguo, also out of options, found some consolation in the fact that the man couldn’t even prove his identity, providing an excuse to keep him detained for a longer period.

After exchanging a few words, the couple dropped the topic. Xiang Rui understood that not only did the cattle station want a quick resolution, but Lin Baoguo was also eager. Detaining someone without any clear reasons certainly wouldn’t put his mind at ease!

After eating, Lin Baoguo made a round at the station, reminding everyone to step up their efforts, before heading back to rest.

In the early hours of the morning, there was a knock at the door. Seeing the room light up, Xiang Changqing’s voice was heard from outside, "Director Lin, there’s a situation. Could you come out?"

Lin Baoguo immediately sped up, grabbed his clothes and ran out as it was easy to dress in the summer, "What happened? Did the man start speaking?"

These few days, the station only had this one matter, Lin Baoguo didn’t think anything major could happen aside from this.

Xiang Changqing initially nodded his head, then shook it. That was still the case. After seeing this, Lin Baoguo decided to shut the door, put on his shirt while striding out, "Let’s walk and talk, what exactly happened?"
