Chapter 702: Chapter 347 Beep Beep Beep from the Pager_1

The next day, as Yan Fei had predicted, after having breakfast at the hotel, he and The Sixth Miss Guo’s party were just preparing to leave when they saw that tomboy sitting in the hotel lobby. As soon as she saw them, she eagerly bounded over: "Big brother, where are you off to play today?"

Behind the tomboy, her brother and sister-in-law were helplessly standing up with embarrassed but resigned smiles.

Yan Fei was in a different mood today and didn’t get impatient seeing the tomboy. Instead, he smiled quite happily, gesturing towards the front desk: "We’re heading back today. We’ll leave as soon as they check out."

The tomboy looked disappointed: "Aw? You aren’t staying to play longer?"

"We are busy at home; we need to get back to work." Yan Fei responded, "Don’t you need to go to school? Why are you out playing at this time?"

"I’m not in school anymore!" the tomboy explained. "I’ve already been accepted into a pilot high school program, so I don’t need to prepare for exams anymore. All I have to do is wait until school starts."

After saying that, she glanced nervously behind her and then whispered, "I didn’t tell them that you were the one who saved me; they still don’t know! Since that incident, I haven’t been able to sleep well, so they took advantage of a business trip to bring me out to play."

After speaking to each other for a while, Yan Fei quickly said goodbye to the girl as the others had finished checking out.

The girl was clearly reluctant to part, "Big Brother, I will write to you and call you, remember to reply to me!"

Yan Fei nodded but before he could answer, the pager in his bag started beeping.

He looked at it and saw that it was a call from Boss Wang, the guy who was building his house in the Provincial City.

Using the phone at the front desk, he called Boss Wang back. After exchanging brief pleasantries, Boss Wang said: "There’s a pair of stone lions in the Old City that nobody wants right now; I was wondering if Brother Yan was interested? They’re three-meter-high Ming Dynasty lions, only 5,000 each, 10,000 for both!"

Yan Fei thought for a moment and asked: "Is this price cheap or expensive? Aren’t these supposed to be at the entrances to business enterprises?"

"Price-wise, this is a clearance sale; it can’t get any cheaper." Boss Wang said. "The key thing is the size, it’s a bit too big. Even the stone lions at the entrance of the Provincial Committee are only two meters high. These are over three meters high. Who would want to trouble themselves with them? If they were just over a meter high, this pair of Ming Dynasty lions could sell for up to ten or twenty thousand. But now, they’ve been sitting there for two years without a buyer. A friend asked me to find a buyer, so I thought I’d check with you!"

"Is the three-meter measurement the total height? I’ve seen those stone lions; they usually have a base underneath. If you count that, wouldn’t it be as tall as a single-story building? Would that look good in my courtyard?" Yan Fei asked.

"Don’t worry, I wouldn’t have asked you if I hadn’t thought it looked good. It definitely won’t look out of place next to the house we’re building for you. If you have time, you can come over and take a look. If you buy this thing and keep it, it might even appreciate in a few years. It may not be convenient for enterprises to use it, but it’s okay for your own home. If you don’t want it later and find a good buyer, you won’t lose money!"

"I’m in Gao City right now! I can’t go there for now. If you think it’s a good buy, then do so, and I’ll pay you when I get back. You can rest assured; I won’t give you a dime less!" Yan Fei was very straightforward.

However, the coincidence was that if Boss Wang had mentioned these two stone lions before he came to Gao City, he definitely wouldn’t want them, no matter how cheap—even if they were free— what was the point of cluttering up his yard with these things?

But after spending a day in Gao City, he had seen many impressive stone lions and when they were placed alongside ancient buildings, they didn’t seem out of place at all; instead, they complemented each other beautifully. After seeing so many, he felt that having two stone lions to go with the house he was going to build would be quite appropriate.

Actually, upon reflection, all the ancient buildings had similar features, including that ancient building in Sancha River Town; it was just that he never paid much attention to them.

Having successfully made the sale, there was a note of elation on Boss Wang’s end: "No problem at all. The truth is, I would love to have these if I wasn’t short on cash and had somewhere to keep them. Oh yes, this is technically property of the Provincial Museum, so you’ll have to come to sign some paperwork, including for all those bricks, tiles, and wood. When you come, we can try to negotiate the price and hopefully, save on shipping. This thing is so big that we’ll have to loop in through the outer ring to haul it to your place, and the shipping isn’t cheap!"

"Thank you, then. You can arrange it! When the time comes, just let me know in advance how much it will cost. I’ll be there in a few days to take care of the paperwork you mentioned." Yan Fei immediately agreed. He doesn’t care; if the shipping cost is too high, he can manage it himself without having to pay a dime.

After inquiring about the progress of the construction project, Yan Fei hung up the phone.

Just as he was about to let out a breath of relief and leave, the pager rang again.

He looked again and saw that it was Comrade Old He from the Agricultural University.

As soon as he called, Old He’s loud voice came over: "Little Yan, I’m planning to squeeze in a visit to your place in a few days. Prepare some good food and drink for me, or I’ll stay at your place without leaving!"

"Fine by me!" Yan Fei answered without hesitation. "Will a basin-sized Old Turtle do? Do you dare eat a meter-long giant salamander? Is a hundred-catty Yangtze Sturgeon enough? If not, I could slaughter our eight hundred catty tiger waiting for you! If you want bear paws, we have a couple of black bears. Just as long as you’re up for it, I can get you anything. I’m just afraid that the older jianghu folks get, the more timid they become. I might get it and you won’t dare to eat it!"

"There’s nothing I wouldn’t dare to eat, as long as you can get it, I can eat it!" Old He’s voice got even louder. "I had no idea you were so secretive! Enjoy being a king in your little part of the world, huh? Alright, alright! You wait; I’ll be there in a few days. Rest assured, there’s nothing you can offer that I won’t dare to eat! If there is and I don’t dare to eat it, I’ll call you ’Master’ from now on..."

"That’s settled then. I’m always ready for you! Remember, we agreed—whatever I come up with, you eat, no backing out..." Yan Fei said with a hearty laugh, teasing him.

After a friendly quarrel with the old man, Yan Fei was even more relieved.

It’s true what they say about men being boys at heart! Old He, who’d seen it all in his life, was incredibly laid-back, apart from his hobby for collecting things. He made an excellent friend. If only phone calls were easier now; if everybody had an old school mobile phone and call rates were cheaper, it would definitely be fun to chat and tease each other on a regular basis.
