Chapter 669: Chapter 317: Kneeling and Admitting Guilt_1
Seeing the murderer sobbing desperately, brandishing a knife in a drowning desire to die, Yan Fei simply kicked the knife out of his hands and knocked him over.
Originally intending to immediately fetch the knife, he remembered that it was a murder weapon and would be used as evidence. Thinking quickly, he snatched a handful of hay from the side, twisted it into a rope, and used it to tie the knife to the handlebars of his bike.
Throughout all of this, the man remained sprawled where Yan Fei had floored him, crying and wailing without cease.
Once the knife was secured, an impatient Yan Fei kicked him again and snapped, "That’s enough crying. You’ve done your deed, and only now you regret it? Get moving! I’m a busy man! Hurry up and get to the police station!"
"I won’t go. Give me back my knife so I can die here..." the man laid on the ground unmoving.
"If you don’t get up, I’ll break your arms and legs and haul you to the station on my bike, got it?" Yan Fei didn’t bother with pleasantries. "You’re not even afraid of dying, but you’re afraid of going to the police station?"
He was dealing with a murderer who was lazing around, and Yan Fei was not one to lose his temper. He walked over and dragged the man up from the trench.
The sun was already high in the sky, and as it beat down on him, it seemed to jolt the man completely awake. He glanced at the sun and drearily plopped onto his butt again, saying, "I’ve killed someone..."
"Right!" Just as Yan Fei had parked his bike and saw the man collapse onto the ground again, he felt a twinge of annoyance. "Come on! Go to the station and confess honestly. If you show some remorse, you might even get a life sentence. Behave yourself inside, and there might be a chance for you to see your parents again. Don’t overthink it, let’s get to the station first!"
The man was still very young. Marriage in the rural areas happens early, so his parents weren’t likely to be very old yet. If he behaves and doesn’t get sentenced to death, there’s a real chance for him to return. But at this stage, the man couldn’t care less. After Yan Fei had spoken, he just stood there, dumbfounded, until Yan Fei called him again and he got to his feet, his face a picture of confusion.
"Come here, get on the bike!" Yan Fei could see the state he was in and didn’t bother asking for his opinion. He simply barked out his orders.
Surprisingly, when Yan Fei spoke to him like that, he seemed to listen. He climbed onto the back seat in a daze, and then Yan Fei straddled his bike and set off.
He hadn’t pedaled far when there was a hissing sound from the bike’s tire, followed by another hiss. It was deflated.
The bike once belonged to a guy named Ma Chao, who abandoned it in a cattle yard once he got a motorcycle. It came in handy for anyone who needed it. Yan Fei didn’t expect it would break at such a crucial time.
Annoyed, Yan Fei turned to the confused-looking man and said, "Get off, come and lift the bike for me. Look at my rotten luck!"
The man, clearly not in his right mind, didn’t oppose and heaved the bike onto his shoulder. He started to stagger forward.
The spot where Yan Fei had found the man wasn’t far from the village. Not long after they started down the path, the village came into view. As they got closer, the man turned to Yan Fei and said, "Boss Yan, can I go into the village for a bit?"
"What do you want to see there?" Yan Fei asked, puzzled. But hearing the man address him as Boss Yan, he knew the man had regained his senses.
"I need to bow my head in apology. I caused all of this by drinking. I’ve wronged people, and I need to apologize..."
"You want to go into the village now? Aren’t you afraid they’ll beat you to death?"
"Even if they beat me to death, I deserve it. Since I have to face the music at the police station anyway. Let me go!"
"Alright, go on ahead then! If anyone tries to fight you, I might be able to intervene..."
The two of them kept walking towards the village, one in front of the other. Before they even reached the village, people had already spotted them. It was inevitable that someone recognized them and shouted, "They’ve caught the murderer..."
A crowd surrounded them in no time. Yan Fei stepped forward, leading the way. Some people recognized him and initially hesitated to approach.
But Yan Fei didn’t plan on staying. He had spotted the rundown police Jeep not far from the entrance of the village. A couple of motorcycles were parked beside it, two of them obviously from the cattle yard.
In just a minute, the police had darted out of the station. Old Ou and Heizi were also present.
Dang Wenzheng and another officer tried to apprehend the murderer but Yan Fei shrugged them off, "Forget it, this guy just sobered up. He wants to go apologize to the dead man’s family. He’s not going to run, just let him go!"
As he was a murderer, the man didn’t seem particularly evil on a day-to-day basis. So, Yan Fei decided to fulfill his minor request.
Seeing Yan Fei had spoken, Lin Baoguo, who had followed them, kept quiet. He nodded at Dang Wenzheng and the officer to let the man pass.
Heizi and Old Ou came over and Heizi whispered to Old Ou, "As soon as I saw the Golden Eagle, I knew Brother Fei was here. Look, with Brother Fei here, everything is resolved in no time!"
Old Ou agreed, nodding in appreciation.
The rest of the people didn’t question Yan Fei on how he found the man. Instead, many people were looking up at the Golden Eagle in the sky.
This pair of Golden Eagles had become Yan Fei’s signature. Most of the time, if the eagles were spiraling above somewhere, that meant Yan Fei was nearby; they were like spotlights.
There was an overwhelming surge of emotion in the village. The man, already resigned to his fate, simply walked ahead. Upon hearing the news, the son of the deceased ran over and gave the man a flying kick.
While attacking the man, he cursed, "Tell me, how did I wrong you before? You turned mad over two taels of liquor! Did my parents ever offend you when you visited our house? You bastard..."
He spewed insults as he kicked, and the receiver of the blows barely put up a fight after being knocked down. He just let himself be hit.
Yan Fei didn’t intervene, and even when Lin Baoguo tried to step in, he stopped him.
After a few kicks, the young man slumped onto the ground crying and cursing all the while. It was then Yan Fei decided to step in and comfort him, "Enough, he was drunk when he did all this. He tried to commit suicide by cutting his arm, but he was so drunk he missed the right spot and didn’t die. He came here to apologize for his wrongs..."
"I don’t want his apology, tell him to leave, to get out of my sight! Will my parents come back if he apologizes? If he was upset, he should have taken it out on me! What business did he have at my house..."
Seeing the way things were going, Yan Fei kicked the beaten and battered man on the ground, "Satisfied now? He doesn’t even want your apology..."
Lin Baoguo signaled Dang Wenzheng to take him away. The man had only stumbled a few steps when he managed to snap out of it. Struggling against the police, he dropped onto his knees. Facing the still-sobbing young man, he started to bow his head in apology, his cries unintelligible.
After finishing his bows to the young man, the murderer turned to the direction of his house, banging his head against the ground. When the officer finally dragged him to his feet, his forehead was dripping with fresh blood.
Just as he was about to be put into the police vehicle, the man struggled again and knelt towards his village, banging his head several times before the police finally bundled him into the car.
If he had known this day would come, he wouldn’t have done what he did in the first place.
