Chapter 651: Chapter 306 - Digging a Pond, Chai Ji’s Doubts_2
He then went to catch a few more old turtles. The old turtles are great, their best feature being that they look just like any ordinary turtle, regular folks wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Even the slight variations wouldn’t draw anyone’s attention. As for their larger size, it’s not an issue. No matter how big they get, they start off small, so just catch the small ones.
He had planned to catch a few fish too, but had no place to keep them. He had dug a small pond next to the greenhouse, but then he piled up the cow dung too close. When it rained, the rainwater mixed with the dung and flowed into the pond. The water is now fine to irrigate the land but it’s disgusting to put fish in.
It seems he will have to build a better pond in the future. He will start that project tomorrow. He can keep some fish in there and won’t have to lie about catching them from the river anymore.
After eating and drinking to his heart’s content, he sat in the cave of Vegetable Garden Island, staring blankly at the shimmering sea. Suddenly, an idea sprang to mind. Pondering for a moment, he grew excited.
He then picked up his axe and chopped down a few medium-sized trees. He tied them together with vine to make a simple raft.
After preparing the raft, he casually killed a small dinosaur, tossed the raft into the sea, and then placed the dead dinosaur on it.
The freshly chopped trees were still brimming with moisture. With the weight of the small dinosaur on it, the raft partially submersed in the water. The dinosaur’s blood hadn’t dried up yet and soon the nearby seawater was tinged red.
Evening waves weren’t big. The small raft bobbed up and down in the sea with the dead dinosaur on it. Yan Fei was a patient man, he just kept staring.
It wasn’t long before a group of sharks swam over. The leading shark bit into the raft with such force that when it retreated, Yan Fei could see a tooth left on the raft.
The little dinosaur was, however, dragged into the ocean by that attack and quickly swallowed by another shark.
It seemed that the method he had just thought of was viable, even if the sharks weren’t the target he was looking for. But for the next attempt, it might be different. He didn’t have much time now, there was no need to test it again. He would act earlier next time, after making the necessary preparations.
He woke up early the next day and saw a young woman staring at him as she pulled at his ear. Seeing that he was awake, she said angrily, "Yan Xiaofei, didn’t you say that you were going to sleep next door? Why did you sneak into my bed in the middle of the night?"
Yan Fei was instantly alert, then put on a puzzled face, "I don’t know! I was sleeping next door. Maybe I was sleepwalking... Is it dawn? Didn’t you say you wanted to see the trees and roses I planted? Get up and go check them out..."
"Hmph!" The woman glared at him. "I’ll let it go this time, but we’ll settle this later! Hurry up and get out, I need to get dressed..."
Yan Fei promptly rolled out of bed, threw on some clothes, and ran, "I’m going to prepare breakfast!"
When the woman passed by the kitchen after getting ready, she coldly snorted at him, then went to look at the roses. There wasn’t anything worth seeing. It had only been a few days since planting, there were no flowers.
When Yan Fei finished preparing breakfast and called the woman back, there were three small sables leading the way, and two large guard dogs following behind her, what a sight. Standing at the door, she threatened Yan Fei, "I’ll let them sleep in my room next time. If you dare to sneak in again, they’ll bite you..."
Yan Fei ignored her threat and called, "Get ready to eat! We’ll go work at the cattle ranch after eating. And I’ll be bringing a few people back later. We’re going to make a small pond here, catch some fish and put them in when we get the time, so we won’t have to go to the river every time we want to eat fish."
The woman felt that her threats were making her seem flustered. Pretending to be angry, she snorted coldly and started eating.
After breakfast, Yan Fei took the woman to the cattle ranch, had her organize some accounts, and then went to the construction site. Ma Yongming wasn’t there, so he approached the construction worker named Da Song whom he was familiar with, "The pond over there can’t be used anymore. I plan to make a bigger one, for irrigation and temporary fish storage. How many things do we need? I’ll have Heizi pull them in with the tractor."
After asking him about the size of the pond he planned to build, Da Song made his calculations and said directly, "There will be people delivering bricks and sand in a while, even if there’s some leftover, it should be enough. Have you dug your pond yet? If not, while we’re here, we can grab some cement and take it over."
Hearing Da Song’s plan, Yan Fei agreed and asked him to call Heizi to drive the tractor over. He then went to dig the pond.
He was halfway done by the time Heizi arrived with the tractor, hauling all the supplies. He asked them to replant the watermelon seedlings he had dug up and put them somewhere else, and to unload the cement and get it ready.
With some help, the pond construction was going smoothly. They had almost dug it all out by the time the sand and brick delivery arrived.
The work officially began as soon as they finished unloading everything.
When it was almost noon, Yan Fei’s pager beeped. He pulled it out to take a look, attracting the envious eyes of Heizi and the others, and laughed, "It’s a message from my wife, saying that the phone has been installed at our place. It’s true what they say about things getting done quickly when the mayor’s involved!"
