Chapter 479: Chapter 174: Comparing Patience_1

"What kind of nonsense are you blabbering? I’ve never heard of raising tigers. Are you guys here to make trouble?" Those who had come with Yan Fei found the young man’s words hilarious, but the people of Houfang Village were getting frustrated.

Raising pigs and cows, sure, but tigers? Isn’t this clearly trying to stir up trouble?

Deep down, they had an inkling that these guys were indeed here to cause chaos! Just because they lived far from the town, didn’t mean they were completely out of touch with current affairs. How could they not know that there were no tigers in Sancha River Township?

And it wasn’t as if no one from their village had ever gone to the cattle farm for drinks. It wasn’t that there was no one who could recognize Yan Fei.

They were making a scene not only because they reckoned the local leadership wouldn’t let things escalate, but also because they felt that since the cattle farm could decide who gets a cow and who doesn’t, why not them?

Exactly for this reason, as quite a few days of the New Year were still left and there wasn’t much work to be done in the fields, people were free. They believed that by going there and making some noise, the chance of getting a little extra could very well land in their hands. What a good deal! They had no qualms about it! After all, if poverty alleviation was the goal, they were also poor. Why shouldn’t they be helped first?

In reality, nobody was a fool. Not everyone might understand the full situation, but at least a good part of them grasped what was going on!

But with the arrival of these "victims" they felt a little fearful - of course, this had a lot to do with the presence of the few gigantic tigers.

"Why do you say we came to make trouble? We genuinely wanted to ask if you guys are raising tigers!" The young man who had shouted earlier said with a smirk. "Besides, we were just passing. Surely your village won’t even let people pass through, right? That would make no sense, right?"

"Right!" The one who shouted in agreement was not a resident of Houfang village, but a young man standing behind him.

"Every time your tigers pass through, our hens don’t lay eggs for days, and you say you’re not troublemakers..."

"That’s right, our cow is pregnant! What if it gets scared and something goes wrong?"

"..."

The people of Houfang were all talking at once, creating quite a commotion.

The young men who had come with Yan Fei, claiming passing through as their reason, kept insisting that they were merely passing through. The more they repeated it, the more fluent they became, completely forgetting their initial query about raising tigers, consistently denying that they were causing trouble.

Yan Fei found it all rather uninteresting. The eastern sky was already whitening, dawn was nearing. He walked over to a few houses near the threshing ground, sat down next to a wall, like an old farmer basking in the sun, entertained by two small black bears near him.

A few tigers lazed around him, appearing as lethargic as he was.

The current commotion lacked any sort of leadership. Even some villagers who were ignorant about the real situation kept arguing, this was just a waste of time.

The one asking about raising tigers was being referred to by Tian Dafu as Big Brother Zhuang, and the one who kept agreeing with him was his little brother Xiaozhuang. The brothers were like comic duo, one would make a statement and the other would flatter him, quite high-spirited they were.

The crowd on the other side was growing restless. Though they had the advantage of numbers, the presence of tigers restrained them from making rash actions. Besides, those dozen or so young men didn’t look like easy opponents. In Sancha River dialect, they appeared to be tough characters - and these people weren’t even from the same village. Even if they decided to fight and regardless of the outcome, it would lead to conflicts with more than one or two villages. Anyone with common sense would consider the consequences.

It’s peculiar how these people don’t fear the leaders of their township, they even picket the township government’s gate at the drop of a hat. However, when dealing with villagers, they refrain from causing offense.

More and more people were gathering, old and young alike. Many children ran out to see the tigers only to be dragged back home by their elders. It was quite the spectacle.

Of course, the number of young men on the opposite side was also increasing and as the conversation became more heated, everyone seemed to be armed, looking ready to break into a fight over the slightest dispute.

"Roar..."

Just then, the tiger roared again.

Even the window paper trembled, and the crowd instantly fell silent.

As Yan Fei leaned against the wall, contemplating the situation, he looked at the houses behind him. Despite being built of tiles, they still had a wide eave like old houses - the eave was supported by large wooden pillars coated in red paint.

The red paint seemed to have been there for a good while, windows still covered with paper, probably the old brigade headquarters - where the village meetings were held. The term ’brigade’ was used during the cooperative society period.

The brigade headquarters are usually built at the entrance of the village. This village was located at the back, which implied that the back of the village might have been the front before. It indicated that when they used to go to the market, they used to leave from this side, probably towards a different place. Now, since it was annexed by Sancha River, the marketplace was changed to the town of Sancha River.

Perhaps that is the hometown sentiment? Depending on which township the village belonged to, the villagers were habituated to going to that town’s marketplace.

While he was lost in these thoughts, people on the other side were getting worked up.

Initially, the uproar was caused by their insistence that bringing tigers was a bid to cause trouble. But once everyone calmed down, the problem shifted to ’please take those tigers away.’

But Yan Fei remained silent, and the group of young men who almost began to brawl understood that the timely roar by the tiger was a signal to stop the impending fight.

In that case, they decided to continue arguing, or to ’reason’: the village is yours, even the land is yours, but you can’t deny us a short rest; that’s unheard of. After all, we are all from the surrounding area, ever heard of any village that doesn’t even let non-residents rest at the outskirts?

Anyway, they started making irrational arguments. As long as Yan Fei didn’t say it was time to go, they found all sorts of reasons to stay.

Unfortunately, the village was not initially part of Sancha River Township, and hence, didn’t have many relatives around - that’s the way it was in rural areas, they respected their own township, daughters were married off and sons married women from within their township, it felt safer knowing each other’s background well, and it was even convenient to solve any issues that arose.

Because of this, they weren’t very familiar with the people from the villages of Sancha River Township, there were hardly any who could strike a conversation with those young men.

In reality, this ruckus was leading nowhere, Yan Fei was even too lazy to listen to it.

Not until a group of neatly dressed people hurried out of the village - they looked like the respectable folk of the village. Finally, here came the village representatives.
