After roaring, Yan Fei didn’t even look at the young man. He just stood there, scanning the two-story courtyard. He was searching for the person who had left them thirty yuan - the leader who entrusted them with the ’temporary’ care of a tiger, as Yan Fei had come to think of him.

Out from the toilet on the other side of the courtyard, a flustered figure emerged. Seeing Yan Fei, he called out, "What are you doing here? What was that tiger’s roar just now? You didn’t bring a tiger with you, did you?"

"I came to ask when you’re planning to retrieve the tiger. I didn’t bring it with me. This guy didn’t believe me, so I executed a tiger’s roar to prove I have been raising one! Now look at him, what a state! What does he do for a living? How can he work at the Forestry Bureau with such little courage? If he ever encounters a real tiger, it might just scare him to death!"

Who else could Yan Fei recognize at the Forestry Bureau other than Ma Yongming’s father-in-law?

Without responding to Yan Fei’s comment, Comrade Old Wang snapped, "Your roar scared me so much, even in the restroom! And he standing so close to you, how could he possibly be fine?"

It is understandable why Comrade Old Wang was so agitated. He was squatting just before the roar, and nearly fell into the toilet due to the sudden scare.

He then rushed over and slapped the young man’s face lightly, "Xiaosun, Xiaosun, snap out of it! What’s the matter with you?"

Xu Xiaoyan too, was worried sick, fearing that this might have induced some problem in him. She softly asked Yan Fei, "Will he be okay?"

Yan Fei reassured Xiaoyan, "Don’t worry, my roar has faded away. As long as he’s not deaf, it’s not my problem. He deserved it for not believing me when I said I was going to mimic a tiger’s roar..."

After Comrade Old Wang slapped the young man numerous times, he finally snapped back to reality. However, his eyes were still filled with terror. He looked at Comrade Old Wang and asked, "Director Wang, what just happened to me?"

Seeing he was alright, Comrade Old Wang didn’t respond to his question. Instead, he scolded Yan Fei, "You can really mess around, aren’t you afraid that you might induce some kind of trauma?"

Yan Fei completely ignored his remark and instead asked, "So, you are the director? I thought I was looking for the guy who left thirty yuan! It’s great to find you instead. You guys have had me take care of these tigers for so long, when are you going to deal with them? You gotta give me some kind of update!"

Comrade Old Wang glanced at the bystanders in the courtyard, then turned his back to them and loudly stated, "It’s okay, nothing to worry about. This is the man who assisted us in capturing the criminals involved in illegal wildlife trade last time. He’s been helping us take care of some protected animals. He’s just here to ask about the situation. Everyone, get back to your work!"

Then he turned back to Yan Fei and said, "Let’s go to my office." Saying so, he walked towards his office with his hands behind his back. Yan Fei was about to reluctantly follow, when the young man, seemingly recovered from the shock, stood up and glaring at Yan Fei said, "Boy, this matter is not over yet, just you wait!"

Yan Fei looked back at him, gave him a once over and scoffed, "Shouldn’t you go change your pants first?"

Looking down he noticed a large wet patch on his pants, still warm. How did this happen?

Once he realized what had happened, he covered his wet pants and ran towards the security room at the gate. There were still quite a few people in the courtyard who had not gone back into the office. Initially, since everyone was quite far away, they might not have noticed that he had wet his pants. But his attempt to cover the wet patch just drew everyone’s attention and incited smirks from the crowd.

Yan Fei followed Comrade Old Wang into his office, visibly annoyed at the pretentiousness of the older man. However, as soon as they walked into the office, Comrade Old Wang’s attitude changed completely. He enthusiastically greeted Yan Fei, "Come on in! Would you like a drink?"

Yan Fei responded dismissively, "No need, we brought our own." He then took out some tomatoes from his basket and handed one to Xiaoyan and the kid. He then turned to Comrade Old Wang and said, "Hurry up and decide what to do with the tiger. Oh and, this is the bill! Check if there’s any problem with it, if not, settle the account!"

Comrade Old Wang, in response to Yan Fei’s words could only respond with a resigned sigh. The one who owes money is the real boss these days. Even as a county bureau, if we owe someone a favor, we can’t possibly keep our heads high!

He reluctantly said, "Alright, alright, I apologize. I was a bit hasty just now and my manners were bad. Please forgive me. Now, does that sound good? It’s not that I blame you. But you understand, we are the Forestry Bureau. You came here and scared the daylights out of the gatekeeper, causing him to wet his pants. How bad does that sound when it gets out?"

Yan Fei disdained him, "Are you still the Forestry Bureau? Where is your thirty yuan guy? Look at the bill and see how much I spent on raising the tigers for you!"

The mention of the thirty yuan finally registered with Comrade Old Wang. He nodded in understanding, "That was one of our leaders. He’s not here today, but I can make the decision." He then took the bill, but was taken aback once he glanced at it, "So much money? Are you ripping us off?"

Congratulations, you got it!

Yan Fei silently agreed but aloud he said, "Just look and you’ll know what’s on it! The tigers are all grown now, and there’s also a bear. They have a massive appetite. How much meat do you think they collectively consume in a day? I haven’t even included the cost of vegetables I feed the bear! Out of season veggies are not cheap you know!"

Actually, Comrade Old Wang, being part of the Forestry Bureau, could see the ’legitimacy’ of the bill. Yan Fei was still explaining: "The tiger has grown another size. I’ve been feeding it until it’s several tens of pounds heavier than when you last saw it. You won’t believe it until you’ve seen it for yourself."

Old Wang was torn between laughter and tears: "I trust you, how can I not? I’ve heard about you using the tiger to chase people off..."

Yan Fei asked: "What are you going to do about it?"

Old Wang looked helpless: "We’ve applied for it, but the local zoo can’t take in so many animals at once. Besides, according to your bill, it’s hard to afford them. Even if you sold me, I couldn’t afford it!"

Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t help but say: "You’re the Forestry Bureau, aren’t you?"

Comrade Wang explained: "Our tiny county bureau has only a few people. The total salary of all of us is even less than your bill."

The girl was puzzled: "Can’t you ask for funds from the city?"

"What kind of explanation do you want?" Comrade Old Wang looked depressed. "I’m just a deputy and can’t make decisions! How about I give you a certificate that proves the tiger is entrusted to you by us?"

"Just a simple certificate?" Yan Fei was growing increasingly dissatisfied with his attitude.

"That’s the only authority I have! If you insist on money, how about we see how much I can fetch if you sold me?" Great, both of them have backed the deputy director into a corner and he’s starting to play dirty.

Yan Fei was left speechless, he never expected this seemingly serious man to play this card?

"How can just one certificate suffice? What if I develop feelings for them while raising them, and then you suddenly come and take them away? I wouldn’t get anything, right?" Yan Fei had thought it through, and made his request clear. "You have to write that we are allowed to charge admission like a zoo, and that we can take them to perform. Otherwise, we can’t afford to just raise them. And you have to state that if you come to take them away in the future, you must make up for the feed cost."

The performing part was added in at the last minute. He thought that not allowing the townspeople to see the tiger wouldn’t work, kids would surely sneak in to see. He considered just parading them around town every so often so that once everyone’s seen the tigers, they’d lose interest.

For now, Old Wang just wanted to send him away, so he thought for a moment and said: "This is not my decision to make, I have to ask for advice. You wait here for awhile, I’ll be right back."

Once he left the room, Yan Fei realized that the man responsible for that thirty-dollar incident was his leader, the proper director. He said that the leader was not there just now, but he turned around and said he was going to ask for advice. It seems he just lied to Yan Fei - Yan Fei suddenly felt his conditions were too mild.

While thinking about adding more conditions, he heard Old Wang making a phone call in the next room. After having a conversation with someone on the phone, Old Wang went to another room and came back with a piece of paper.

Since he had been consulting over the phone, Yan Fei didn’t blame him. He took the paper and glanced over it. It was more or less a statement that the Forestry Bureau had entrusted Comrade Yan Fei from Sancha River Township to take care of certain protected animals, and listed quite detailed information about the animals.

After finishing reading, he handed it to Xu Xiaoyan: "You help me check it, how does it look?"

Xu Xiaoyan read it through word by word and pointed to one of the sentences, whispering to Yan Fei: "This ’discretionary’ part is not good, it has to state that they will pay the actual feeding costs according to the situation. Yan Fei didn’t care for things that had no actual value. He had no intention of taking it originally, but seeing that there was a big red seal on it, he reconsidered and accepted it. He didn’t even bother to say thank you.

Yan Fei wanted Old Wang to sign the bill, but Old Wang would rather die than sign.
