Chapter 470: Chapter 165: The Fallen Gate (Pleading for Subscriptions!)_1
In the end, Yan Fei couldn’t get Comrade Old Wang to sign his invoice, so he helplessly left Comrade Old Wang’s office with his certificate and award.
Even as he walked out the door, he couldn’t help but voice a complaint, "You guys are the Forestry Bureau, yet you hire such an unprofessional person to guard the gate? He threatened me right behind your back, aren’t you ashamed? If anything happens to me, I am going to come looking for you!"
He was purposely making sure Comrade Old Wang wouldn’t have peace of mind even at his departure.
Comrade Old Wang was trying to explain from behind, "There are things about the Bureau you don’t understand..."
But Yan Fei had already left with his brother, and his wife and feigned deafness to Old Wang’s explanation.
Xu Xiaoyan still asked him, "Is this really okay?"
Yan Fei glanced back at the door of Old Wang’s office, "Didn’t you see, Old Wang is not the one calling the shots. He’s in a tough spot too, this is enough. Don’t you like those sables? We’ll raise them together for fun in the future! Just think of the rest as raising a dog to watch the door!"
"Brother, Brother, look! That guy inside is glaring at me!" Yan Chao pulled at Yan Fei, pointing at the window of the small security room at the gate.
When Yan Fei looked over, he saw the youngster he had just frightened, gesticulating threateningly at Yan Chao through the window. When the youngster noticed Yan Fei looking, he quickly withdrew and pulled the curtain over the window with a snap.
Yan Fei instantly grew angry and wanted to go forward and teach the youngster a lesson. His wife held him back, "Never mind, consider it giving some face to Director Wang. After all, he’s just a gatekeeper, he can’t do anything to us!"
"Just because he’s a gatekeeper, he thinks he can bite anyone he sees? Is he taking himself for a dog?" Yan Fei was still unhappy, but since his wife had advised him, he merely grumbled and didn’t proceed further.
When they reached the door of the small house, he noticed the key to the lock on the door was hanging there. He gave a sly smile, stepped forward and locked the door from the outside, casually tossing the key onto the roof.
The young man inside probably felt a little guilty, fearing that Yan Fei might come in and beat him up. So he didn’t make a sound when he heard the door being locked.
Yan Fei’s wife laughed and nudged him, "Look at you, being so naughty! You even tossed his key away, how is he supposed to get out now? You shouldn’t stoop to the level of a gatekeeper!"
She didn’t know that Yan Fei was even worse than what she thought — the lock he had toyed with wouldn’t work with any key anymore.
Yan Fei showed no sympathy, "So what if he’s a gatekeeper? If I don’t teach him a lesson, he’ll look down on people with his dog’s eyes! Did you see him earlier? He was even trying to scare a kid! How can I not discipline him?"
As he spoke, he looked at the gate and then said to his wife, "No way, he’s a gatekeeper, right? I need to tamper with this gate too. You go outside first..."
Once she was outside, he walked around the gate and tweaked the latch, then finally strutted out: "Let’s go, Xiaochao, I already avenged you!"
He really did take his revenge!
Only after they had left did the young man dare to come out. He pulled the door a couple of times before realizing it had been locked from the outside. Cursing profusely, he climbed out of the small window. Seeing the locked door, the guy chuckled to himself, muttering, "What a country bumpkin! Thinking that locking the door would mean I have no other tricks, idiot! Doesn’t he know I have a spare key?!"
He climbed back in to fetch his spare key, inserted it into the lock with practiced ease, but it wouldn’t go in; tried a couple more times immediately, but still, no luck...
Looking down, he saw the keyhole was misaligned, making it impossible to insert any key. Instantly furious, he stomped his foot and cursed, "Clever boy, well played!"
He climbed back into the house once more, emerging this time with a screwdriver, muttering threats as he worked on the screw of the door knob, "Little punk, I’ll remember this! Wait till next time, see how I’ll take care of you. If this time I had to change a lock because of you, next time I won’t let you through the door..."
As if this wasn’t enough, in the midst of his fury, a car pulled up outside. He didn’t have time to fuss over the house door lock, instead rushing to open the main gate.
With key in hand, he ran up to the gate, the lock wasn’t broken this time and with a click, it opened. He was ready to pull the latch and open the door when he couldn’t get the latch to budge...
On a closer examination, he was absolutely livid. The door latch had slightly curved at both ends. The iron gate was homemade without any standard specifications. The latch was just a rod, flattened at one end and at the other end, a hole for a lock. Now with both ends slightly bent, even without a lock, the latch couldn’t be pulled out.
Although the latch itself wasn’t thick, roughly as thick as a thumb, it was a tough steel pipe which had been welded. Straightening it out now was a problematic task, difficult to hammer it straight.
By now, the person in the car had been honking for a while. The young gate keeper had no choice but to sheepishly go out and explain the situation.
He would have been delighted if Yan Fei was there. The person in the car happened to be that ’Thirty Bucks’. Realizing that the gate couldn’t be opened anytime soon, he got out of the car with an impatient look and walked in. Of course, he didn’t forget to reprimand the young man before entering, ordering him to fix the gate quickly.
The young gatekeeper even complained that it was the person who took care of the protected animals who had damaged it. But ’Thirty Bucks’ didn’t care who broke it! He felt guilty, knowing that Yan Fei was coming, and fearing that Yan Fei would ask for some conditions. He just scolded the young man, "As a gatekeeper, you’ve let someone ruin the gate like this, do you even have any sense of responsibility?"
So, with his pride wounded, the gatekeeper sent away ’Thirty Bucks’. He then climbed back into his cabin through a window, found a large hammer, and got ready to smash the hell out of the gate!
"Whack..."
"Hey hey hey..."
"Bang!"
The series of sounds, especially the final ’bang’, made a big ruckus, startling quite a few people in the office.
’Thirty Bucks’, who had not entered the office yet, turned his head to see the young gatekeeper standing amidst the dust with a bewildered face, holding the hammer. In front of him, lay the fallen gate.
The first sound came when he hit the latch with the hammer, the ’hey hey hey’ was his startled exclamation as he saw the gate falling and tried to runaway, and the last sound, of course, was the noise of the iron gate hitting the ground.
At that moment, Xu Xiaoyan was helping Yan Fei to put vegetables from the basket into the kitchen. When the basket was nearly empty, she noticed four steel rods at the bottom, rusted at both ends and shiny in the middle from friction. She asked puzzled, "What are these? What are you using them for? Isn’t it heavy carrying them in this basket?"
Yan Fei explained with a sly smile, "Well, these are from the gate’s axis. I was just thinking, if the gatekeeper can lose even this, how can the leaders of our compound bear it?"
Upon hearing this, Xu Xiaoyan was speechless. After a while, she finally said, "You should put them away, don’t let your parents see. If they knew about your mischief, they’d surely scold you!"
"Ok Ok!" Yan Fei nodded in agreement.
When his parents returned at noon, Yan Fei had even cooked lunch.
During the meal, he shared some of his recent plans with them. Now his matters had become too complicated for his parents to offer any advice. After some thinking, his father finally advised, "When buying the cattle, just be careful. Don’t spend all the money at once. As the family business grows bigger, there will be expenditures here and there. Always keep a sufficient amount of money handy, in case there’s an emergency and we need money."
This was not a problem, there was no chance for all the money to be spent in one go.
Once it was time for his parents to go work, they quickly made their excuses. Father had to go to work, and mother had to take Xiaochao to school for registration, which was opening alongside factories and preschools.
In the evening, when they returned to Sancha River, Heizi who had been watching the greenhouse all day, was thrilled to see them. From afar, he ran to greet them and curiously asked, "How did it go, how did it go? How did the Forestry Bureau respond? Did they give us any money?"
Yan Fei handed him the certificate and award. After a look, Heizi expressed his disdain, "Just this, nothing substantial?"
Xu Xiaoyan explained, "This way they won’t dare to take away these animals. From now on, we’ll keep a proper account every month. Even if they decide to take away these animals, they’ll have to compensate for our feeding costs first."
"So, when that time comes, they will compensate however much we claim?" Heizi looked unconvinced. Thinking for a moment, he added excitedly, "Then instead of noting down pork and fish in the future, we’ll write it as beef. We’ll start slaughtering cows now since we don’t have any pigs left. The three tigers and two bears eat the most. We’ll note down sixty to seventy kg of beef per day, which isn’t much. The rest of the five eat less, we’ll not bother calculating for them and they’ll have to consider our services free. Let me calculate how much we would have for this month..."
Seeing him daydreaming about exploiting the Forestry Bureau, Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan, who had been busy all day, ignored him and went into the kitchen to prepare dinner.
