Chapter 292: Chapter 13: Searching for Wang Dafu_1
"Hello, I’m trying to find out if you know a teacher named Wang Dafu at this school?"
"Wang Dafu? We have a teacher with that name? I have no idea. Do you know which department he belongs to?"
"I don’t know. I just know his name is Wang Dafu, and he published an article called ’On Cow Dung’ in the Agriculture and Technology magazine two months ago."
"Oh dear! That’ll be hard to find! I’m also new here and not familiar with this. You’d better ask someone else."
"Alright, thanks anyway..."
"..."
"Hey there, I’m trying to find someone. Do you know of a teacher named Wang Dafu at this school? He published an article in the Agriculture and Technology magazine two months ago."
"Huh? Are you sure he’s in our school? I’ve been here for three years, and I’ve never heard of a teacher named Wang Dafu."
"He must be! The name Provincial Agricultural University was written at the end of the article!"
"Can I see the article?"
"Oh, I saw the article in a magazine in the library, and they don’t allow the magazines to be taken out."
"You might have a hard time finding him. With so many professors, lecturers, and teaching assistants in this school, he might even be a relative of a faculty member. The quality of the article you mentioned seems not high-level. Many people can write articles like this, he could even be a student. You should keep asking others! Sorry, I can’t help you."
"Okay. Thanks anyway! I’ll keep asking around."
"..."
On the first Friday of the new academic year, a ’student’, dressed ’modestly’ and wearing black-rimmed glasses, showed up at the gate of the Provincial Agricultural University early in the morning.
This student was on a mission to find a teacher named Wang Dafu.
The same conversation was repeated hundreds of times throughout the morning, but unfortunately none of the students knew a teacher named Wang Dafu.
Even those who looked like teachers were questioned by the bespectacled student, but to no avail.
Therefore, the bespectacled student—Yan Fei felt perplexed. How could someone that was able to publish an article in such a prestigious magazine remain so unknown? This was entirely different from what he had imagined!
Originally, he thought that anyone he asked about Wang Dafu, would respond with something along the lines of, "Ah! You’re looking for Professor Wang Dafu? He is quite a big shot at our school..." Then, they would lead him to Wang Dafu, feeling very proud to have such a figure at their school.
Then, given that he is a university professor, he must be willing to impart knowledge and solve doubts. No doubt that if he went to ask for guidance, the professor would help clarify his questions.
But he encountered a significant setback from the start.
How could nobody know about this big shot who had published an article in a magazine? This was really strange!
He had secretly returned the magazine—he had stolen it from the library, and standing near the front gates armed with this contraband while looking for someone seemed far too blatant. He was pretty sure he wasn’t that reckless!
Although he remembered the content so that he could relay it in detail whenever asked, he still couldn’t find any information on this Wang Dafu.
What’s more, one student seemed to look down on him, saying that there were many people who could publish articles in that kind of magazine and that it didn’t have to be someone from our school.
Yan Fei really wanted to pull that student aside and ask how many articles he had published in a magazine.
From Yan Fei’s perspective, anyone who could have their words printed and published in a square and formal typeface in a publication was undeniably a big shot—be it a magazine, newspaper, or book.
And yet, this big shot in his mind was being accused of pretending to be affiliated with Provincial Agricultural University, which annoyed him.
Soon, class time arrived. Seeing that there weren’t many people coming and going at the entrance of the campus, Yan Fei decided to venture into the university to continue his inquiries.
After wandering around, he noticed a place and silently scolded himself for being a fool. He thought for a bit before heading back to the library to continue his duty - copying books.
There weren’t many people in the campus during the morning, and the ones present were either hurrying somewhere or tucked away in a corner with a book. Yan Fei felt it would be inappropriate to disturb them, so he decided to wait until noon!
As he was engrossed in copying, his pocket suddenly beeped loudly, startlingly noticeable in the quiet library.
Quickly, Yan Fei reached into his pocket and silenced his electronic watch, hurriedly finishing the last part of his copying. He put the book back on the shelf, took his notes, and left the library.
Standing at the entrance of the university canteen, he boasted to himself confidently: Now I refuse to believe I won’t be able to find Wang Dafu!
I was foolishly asking people at the university gate this morning, it certainly wouldn’t have as many people as here!
Although it’s not time for school to be out yet, there are already students who have no classes, starting to trickle in for their meals. Undoubtedly, there will be more people when classes finish.
After asking a few students and finding no leads, and seeing people in a hurry to get their food, Yan Fei decided to step to the side, refraining from questioning those entering for their meals.
When the school bell rang signalling the end of classes, students started flocking into the canteen. After a while, people started to slowly trickle back out. That’s when Yan Fei resumed his quest to find Wang Dafu.
Despite his repetitive monotonous conversation, all he got was a shake of a head. However, there were many passionate students who asked their friends to help him inquire. At some point, he even had a group of fifteen or so students surrounding him, but all were oblivious to who Wang Dafu was.
"Hey, that’s not the way to search for people. Wang Dafu could be a pen name you know? With your way of asking, it’d be tough to find. It’d be better for you to ask the magazine publisher directly!"
While he was busily asking people, one of the students who overheard Yan Fei’s incessant questioning advised him.
"Ask the magazine publisher? Would they know?" Yan Fei asked, looking puzzled.
"Can’t say for sure, you mentioned that it was in a magazine from two months ago, it might be hard to find now. But it’s definitely more promising than asking one by one here. If the magazine publisher can check it out for you, they might be able to get hold of the author’s mailing address. Once you have the address, finding the person should be easy, right?" The student offered his explanation to Yan Fei.
"Could something from a few months ago still be found?" Yan Fei confirmed again.
"As long as you search, it could be found. At least monetary transaction details could be checked from the Finance Department. Think about it, they wrote the article, the magazine publisher couldn’t possibly not pay royalties. If they paid, they certainly must have kept a record! Consequently, this author’s information must be obtainable."
"Okay, thanks! I’ll go and ask. By the way, the address of the magazine publisher is the one written on the magazine, right?"
"Of course! But when you get there, be polite, sensitive. The people there, they might not be that accommodating..."
