Chapter 293: Chapter 14 Daring to Run Faster Than Me_1

For Yan Fei, someone who could casually publish an article in any magazine was akin to a big shot.

So, in his eyes, the editorial department that could publish a magazine was an incredibly sacred place. Anytime he thought about it, he felt sure the people therein were extremely knowledgeable, possessing a near omniscient capability. Otherwise, how could they have the right to decide what articles to publish?

So, before Yan Fei visited the editorial department, with a throbbing heart filled with anticipation and somewhat akin to a pilgrimage, he managed to locate this Agricultural Science magazine office.

Then, yet again, everything seemed a bit off from what he had imagined.

Old streets, a courtyard, that while clean was somewhat narrow due to the frequent amount of people coming and going. Dilapidated buildings surrounded the area, with a surprising number of bicycles around, not to mention the seldom seen motorcycles.

There was a guard at the entrance. When Yan Fei asked if this place was the Agricultural magazine office, the old man responded enthusiastically: "Indeed it is, are you here to see someone?"

Yan Fei was slightly confused, wondering how the man knew immediately that he was looking for someone. Yan Fei nodded: "Yes."

"It’s over there!" The old man pointed casually, "The second-floor over there is the building. Other places have different magazine offices, not grouped together with ours. If you go to the wrong place, no one can help you."

Thanked the old man, and Yan Fei felt the initial anticipation and reverence diminish substantially.

How could such a small decrepit building house it? Such a tiny courtyard and not even solely occupied by the magazine office itself, instead taking up only a tiny corner. It was quite an unexpected discovery.

Filled with a trace of disappointment and a hint of anticipation, he arrived at the front of that small building, only to be disappointed again.

It must be his bad luck. It was the end of the month, nearing the beginning of the next month. At this time, the editorial department was incredibly busy.

He asked several people questions, but they all gave irrelevant answers until he encountered an enthusiastic young man.

The young man first asked about the particular column in which the article appeared. Lucky for Yan Fei, he had a good memory and recalled it. The young man then pointed him to a room and told him to ask the occupants there.

On entering that room, he found everyone busy, with a few people looking weary and stressed.

Yan Fei briefly stated his intention, after which a woman in her thirties, without raising her head, promptly told him, "People often come here asking for such information, but we’re only responsible for publishing. We usually receive articles two to three months in advance, so it’s very difficult to find specific ones. Why don’t you try asking in the finance department? They handle the authors’ honorariums and should definitely have records."

Very well!

Next stop, the finance department.

"Hey hey hey, who are you looking for? What’s the matter? Outsiders can’t enter our finance office. You can just stand there and speak!"

"You want to find someone? Our records are confidential. We can’t tell you if they can be checked. We also have a duty of confidentiality regarding the financial information of our authors. You should ask the editorial department!"

Well, the finance department didn’t even allow him to enter the door. Back to the editorial department it is.

This time Yan Fei asked an older editor and was then advised to leave the title of the article, the issue in which it was published, etc.

After leaving the information, he was told that he could leave. In a few days, when they had some time, the editorial team would look for the information for him. He should come back to check after half a month.

By the time he walked out of the main entrance, the guardsman still greeted him warmly.

Unfortunately, that greeting failed to bring any warmth to Yan Fei’s heart, as he had a feeling that he had probably been duped.

Regarding returning after half a month, he had a clear ominous premonition - even if he came back, there would most likely be no result.

He could imagine, at that time, he would be brushed off with two words: forgotten!

And then they may probably promise him he could return in another half month...

Forget it, it seems he would have to continue with his own slow method of inquiry.

The world doesn’t have a wall that doesn’t allow air through. He doesn’t believe that there wouldn’t be a single person who knew this Wang Dafu who wrote such an article.

Even if he used a pen name, or even if he hid himself in some obscure corner, Yan Fei was determined to find him.

Having made up his mind, and realising it was already late in the day, Yan Fei estimated that school would be out for Miss Xu Xiaoyan.

He didn’t bother looking for a bus, after flying around the Provincial City when he first arrived, he had remembered most of the routes. He just started running towards Miss Xu Xiaoyan’s school.

There were quite a few people on the street, so he didn’t dare to run too fast and instead maintained a leisurely jog. In his mind, he was just expanding his horizons.

The people in the editorial department would have done better to say they couldn’t find the information directly! Why did they have to deceive him and make him feel deflated!

Despite the number of people, the greenery on the streets of the Provincial City was pretty decent. Some main roads had French plane trees, each one of them was so large that an adult wouldn’t be able to get their arms around it. Some smaller streets also had these plane trees but most of them were Chinese Scholar Trees. Being under such tree-lined roads was actually quite comfortable.

"Hey! There’s a thief, catch that man, he sliced my bag...catch that thief..."

While he was jogging, suddenly a great shout came from behind him.

Are there also thieves in the Provincial City?

As he was thinking that, Yan Fei looked back and saw a young man dashing towards him. Not far behind him, there was a middle-aged woman also running and waving her hands, calling for help.

The thief was really sprinting. In a blink of an eye, he ran up to Yan Fei. Just as he was about to overtake Yan Fei, suddenly tripped, and like a neat arrow, he swiftly flew out.

The thief had been running so fast that when he tripped, he flew a long way.

With a thud, he fell to the ground, feeling as if all of his bones had been shattered by the impact. Worse yet, he had fallen face first, probably even losing a few teeth.

Enduring the pain and clenching his teeth, the thief was just about to get up when he felt a foot indelicately stepping on his back, pinning him once more to the ground.

The step was heavy, and the thief felt as if his bones really had been scattered this time.

A number of people had already started running towards the area from the side of the street. The hopeless thief raised his head, only to see someone continuing to jog leisurely away. Looking at him from behind, all he could see was a worn-out oversized white shirt and an army green pair of pants that had been washed until they had become thin.

And then a sentence carried by the wind: "I’m even too embarrassed to run fast on the street, and yet you, a mere thief, dare to run faster than me, even trying to overtake me, huff huff..."

With that grumble, the thief truly wanted to cry but had no tears. He felt aggrieved and wronged: As a thief, wouldn’t I be waiting for a beating if I didn’t run fast? If I ran like you, I would have been beaten to death long ago!

As these thoughts ran through his mind, he coiled up his body on the ground in a well-practiced manner, using his arms to protect his head. He was ready to welcome the punches and kicks from the enthusiastic members of the public who had just arrived.

Still leisurely jogging, Yan Fei, after his ’misadventure’ with the thief, immediately felt significantly better. The frustration he had felt since leaving the editorial department had instantly vanished.

It seems that people should often commit ’bad acts’ secretly. It’s really beneficial for physical and mental health!

With these thoughts and disregarding the excited members of the public shouting behind him, Yan Fei joyfully quickened his pace and jogged lightly towards Miss Xu Xiaoyan’s school...
