Chapter 217: Chapter 80: Increasingly Intense_1
When Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan heard that even the local police had been mobilized over this issue, they looked at each other in disbelief. Yan Fei was stunned at how quickly the news had spread, while Xu Xiaoyan was shocked to realize that Yan Fei was not lying at all!
"Alright, I better get going. I need to check downstream. Do you have any buns here? Hand me a couple. Forget about being polite! Get me a couple of buns and some salted vegetables. I’m also gonna call the bro, we’ll grab a bite before checking downstream." The young policeman said hastily, motioning to his colleague.
Seeing him rush off to gather his comrades, Yan Fei felt guilty.
Look at the trouble he had sparked! Not only had he inconvenienced everyone, but his own uncle was likely dragged into it as well. Yet there was nothing he could do but stand by as others dealt with it.
Yan Fei usually prepared extra food, anticipating the heat and spoilage. He wasn’t worried though, what wasn’t eaten in one meal would be eaten the next, and if not...there was always the dog. So he quickly picked up some buns with Xu Xiaoyan, and put some leftover dishes on the window.
On the outskirts of their liquor shop, there was a small tent providing shelter from the rain. The two cops didn’t come into the cattle yard but stood under this shelter, wolfing down the buns with water. After finishing their meal and expressing their gratitude, they hurried off with their umbrella.
They seemed intent on combing the river for some distance.
As soon as the two officers left, Xu Xiaoyan began to worry. "Yan Xiaofei, there won’t be any trouble here, right? They just warned us to watch out for movements in the river! A python won’t crawl out of it, right...?"
"It won’t, rest assured!" Yan Fei asserted confidently.
Indeed, the man who could turn into a python was standing right beside the girl! Yan Fei knew for sure that a python was not coming out of that river.
"Are you sure? It may have swum down the river by now..." The girl was genuinely concerned.
"Absolutely. Think about it, even if a python shows up, it won’t be a match for me. I can capture it and stew it for meat. By the way, have you ever eaten snake meat?" Yan Fei started to get off track.
"People eat snake meat?" The girl frowned in disgust. "Isn’t that scary? How can they eat it?"
In the area around Sancha River town, people have never eaten snake meat. Given the lack of information, it was normal for the girl to have this misconception.
"I don’t know, maybe stew it for meat? I guess it’s just like our usual meat. After all, it’s still meat!"
"Ugh, stop talking about it, it’s so frightening! Quickly get an umbrella. Let’s go to the river and keep an eye out. If the python shows up, we’ll run! Oh, and is the python really as big as you said? Those two guys didn’t tell us anything."
"Not that big, just a few meters." Seeing the girl being worried, Yan Fei immediately downsized the python significantly.
"A few meters? Just a few meters?" The girl was incredulous. "It scared the police into action, it must be huge! You said it was dozens of meters long at dinner..."
"I was exaggerating then. Aren’t you a university student? Don’t you recognize when someone is using hyperbole?" Yan Fei scorned.
"Oh, Yan Xiaofei, it seems you have learned a thing or two from doing the summer homework. Hyperbole, huh?" The girl was indignant. "Be honest, how big is it, really?"
"I couldn’t see distinctly in the dark! Anyhow, it’s about so long. Maybe dozens of meters, maybe just a few. Those people must have gotten scared because they hadn’t seen a big snake before," bluffed Yan Fei, unable to keep up the act.
"No way, you must know, but are not telling me, right? Say it, how long is it, really?" The girl became serious.
"Seven, eight meters!" Faced with the girl’s persistent questioning, Yan Fei had no choice but to answer honestly.
"Seven or eight?" She asked relentlessly.
"Seven meters, huh...Who can see it clearly in the pitch black? Let’s go, let’s go make some food. Why bother about that? Just have a good meal and take a nap."
But she couldn’t get to sleep in her afternoon nap either, as she kept tossing and turning, calling Yan Fei over again.
"You’d better not lie to me. How big exactly was the python you met? You’re not allowed to run around at night anymore. It’s so dangerous! What if the python found you? What would you do then?"
"Mmm, don’t worry, I’ll be careful!" After some persuasion, Yan Fei finally managed to get her to lay down again, but she soon got up.
They spent the afternoon at the window again. The rain had stopped, and the sun was out. There was still a wind, but no rain to watch.
The two of them hadn’t been there for long when they noticed something was not right.
It started with a few young men, who came strolling from the direction of the river, whispering and acting suspiciously. They were all familiar faces. Someone from their group crossed the bridge, gave Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan another account of the snake incident, and called Heizi to go play with them.
Seeing these people going back and forth on the bridge just like the two who came from the police station, Yan Fei became puzzled. Could you really spot a python just by standing here?
It wasn’t just them, but a good number of folks from the town, who had come out to the bridge by the river to enjoy the fair weather.
Then Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t take it anymore and dragged Yan Fei to the bridge.
Yan Fei, who had good eyesight, immediately noticed that people were pointing and discussing something by the riverbank in the distance.
Probably because the policemen had issued warnings, everyone was standing in the highest part of the riverbank. Only the group that had just gone to fetch Heizi had dared to walk on the small path along the river.
The news spread quickly. Some of the factory workers reportedly ran back home, and some of those living close to the riverbanks even braved the rain to bring their families along to their relatives’ houses. Even though only a few did so, it was enough to make the news travel fast in the surrounding area.
Rains had just fallen, and although a lot of fish had risen to the surface of the Stinky Water River, the stench was not as bad.
Yan Fei and Xu Xiaoyan watched for a while. Actually, it was mainly Xu Xiaoyan who was watching. Yan Fei was just keeping his ears open, listening to the people around discussing things.
The rumors were getting increasingly fantastical. The python had grown from a few dozens of meters to hundreds of meters long. It was as thick as a house. The more they heard about it, the more preposterous it became. Then, they decided to return home.
Just as they got back to watching the window again, Yan Fei’s acquaintances, Xiaohei, Pang Fa, and Ma Yongming, came over to watch the commotion too.
They also warned Yan Fei to be careful, which made Xu Xiaoyan even more terrified.
It didn’t end there. Even Xu Xiaoyan’s own family members came, with her two sisters even persuading her to come back home.
This unsettled the people at the cow farm. They began discussing that they had so many cows, which might just attract the python.
Heizi spoke clearly: considering how big the python is, it must eat a lot. Ordinary cats or dogs wouldn’t fill it up. It may need several cows for one meal. Should we relocate our cows to places further away from the river?
At first, Yan Fei thought Heizi’s reasoning was ridiculous. But then he felt a chill down his spine. This matter was indeed serious. Everyone at the farm, including Xu Xiaoyan and her two sisters who hadn’t left yet, all looked at him with worried expressions. They seemed to think the suggestion was reasonable.
In spite of knowing that what they were worried about was impossible—since he himself was the python, he wouldn’t be silly enough to devour the cows raised by hard work—it was still an issue he couldn’t voice out. So what should he do?
