Chapter 218: Chapter 81: I Have a Big Hammer_1
Seeing that this crowd was seriously preparing to move the cattle out of the ranch, Yan Fei felt overwhelmed.
As he pondered the situation, he heard someone on the bridge shouting, "The water level is rising again! Just a while ago, it had risen by a foot..."
There was a unique custom in Sancha River town. Every summer, people would gather by the riverbank to monitor the water level, whether there was cause for concern or not.
Whenever there was heavy rainfall upstream during summer, the water level would rise, and panic would spread throughout the town. This would mean that floodwaters could pour into the town at any moment, necessitating the immediate blocking of the main road leading to the village entrance, or else the town would be flooded.
This was part of the reason why this area still had its entire city wall intact. Without these walls, any rise in the river water level could easily flood the town.
So whenever there was a possibility of the water level rising due to rainfall, people would gather on the east and west bridges, umbrellas in hand, to check the water level. Some would even insert measurement sticks into the riverbank to see how long it took for the rising water to submerge them.
If things looked dire, immediate action would be taken—people would be rallied to fill bags with sand and block the main road leading to the village entrance.
Now that there were people on the bridge, water levels were naturally being monitored. Moreover, there was another reason for this vigil: the faster the water level rose, the greater the amount of rain upstream, and hence the greater the likelihood that a large snake might be swept downstream!
So when they heard that the water level was still rising, even more people suggested that Yan Fei move the cattle from the ranch. Heizi and his men even began thinking about who in the town had enough room and vacant houses to temporarily accommodate these cattle.
Seeing this, Yan Fei became anxious and decided to throw reason to the wind. He said bluntly, "Why all the fuss about a python when I’m here? If it dares show up, I’ll just stew it for a meal."
Xu Yue responded, "A python won’t engage you in a test of strength. If it wraps around even a bull, the bull won’t stand a chance."
"Do you think I’m so foolish that I would just take on a python with my bare hands? Can’t I use a weapon?" Yan Fei glanced at Xu Xiaoyan, seeing worry in her eyes. Feeling quite exasperated, he finally said, "Alright, since you all are so worried, wait here for me. We can talk when I return."
With that, he left the ranch and headed toward the river. As he walked along the river, he began to wonder if he had unwittingly dug his own grave. It was a sobering thought.
Since the area was muddy and deserted due to the recent rain, he decided to sneak onto Vegetable Garden Island. He fetched the metal pole that had been used for vandalism last night and headed back with it.
The crowd watched as he returned, a massive metal pole in tow, faces a mix of puzzlement and realization.
Entering the ranch, Yan Fei noticed a pile of bricks in the corner of a wall. He swung the metal pole and smashed it into the pile with a thunderous crash. Shards of brick flew in all directions, with the bricks at the bottom pulverized into powder.
He then walked up to the door and drove the pole hard into the ground. It sank over a meter deep and stood firmly upright like a small flagpole.
Dusting off his hands, he turned to the incredulous crowd and said, "See, I don’t believe there’s anything whose head could withstand my iron pole."
The crowd finally caught on. Indeed, this formidable force should be more than enough to deal with any threatening serpent.
Heizi broke out into laughter: "When did you come up with this, Yan Fei? With this thing, you don’t have to be afraid of any snake."
As he spoke, he approached the pole and tried to pull it out. But could he? It didn’t budge in the slightest.
Several other young men, always game for some fun, surrounded him and offered their help. Despite their best efforts, they could do no more than slightly tilt the pole, but they couldn’t pull it out.
"My goodness, this must weigh at least two hundred catties!" None of them had ever encountered such a heavy iron pole. Embarrassed after their failed attempts, they could only comment with a wry smile.
"It should be well above two hundred. More like three to four hundred catties." Old Cheng remarked. The fact that he could laugh at such a time had to do with having Yan Fei, the human weapon around. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been a laughing matter. "The usual sledgehammer weighs a few dozen catties already, and you see how small it is. This pole isn’t hollow, it must surely weigh between three to four hundred catties."
On hearing this estimate, Heizi and his men completely abandoned their efforts to remove the pole. With its weight, not even the strongest among them could possibly handle it.
With their worries allayed, Xu Xiaoyan began to recount the story of this heavy sledgehammer. When they heard Yan Fei had obtained it for only fifty yuan and had also chosen other scrap iron from the firm, they couldn’t help but laugh.
Before long, the crowd had dispersed. Even Xu Xiaoyan’s sisters stopped persuading her to leave. With Yan Fei present, they felt a sense of security. Still, they advised, should anything happen, he shouldn’t try to handle it alone but run as quickly as possible.
Once everyone had left, Xu Xiaoyan turned to Yan Fei and asked, "Have you actually seen the giant python before? If it turns out to be huge, wouldn’t it be risky to depend on your strength and iron pole? What if it coils around you? Even a misstep could be dangerous!"
"I’m really fine!" Everyone else’s opinion didn’t bother Yan Fei much, but when Xu Xiaoyan expressed her concern, he felt compelled to further assuage her fears. "Haven’t you ever wondered why I’m not afraid? Because I’m confident I can handle it! I promise you, it won’t dare come here. And if it does, it will just end up as our dinner."
It took him a lot of persuading to finally put Xu Xiaoyan at ease.
Most people think there’s always a taller person to stand up when the sky falls. But only the ones close to you worry about what will happen if that tall person encounters trouble.
Not long after they entered the house, they heard the sound of vehicles passing by on the street. Heizi, who had been watching the excitement on the bridge, ran back and exclaimed, "Did you see that, Xiao Fei? The soldiers with guns passing by just now, think those were real? They looked powerful!"
With that, Heizi ran off again, likely following the convoy to town in hopes of finding out more information.
Typical of Heizi! No matter how unrelated the matter was to him, he was always the most invested.
Yan Fei was left wondering: Why all this fuss? If it’s the soldiers with guns, the military must have been alerted. Is it really necessary? There had been constant rumors about giant snakes in the area, but had anyone ever taken it this seriously?
But he also failed to consider that, in all those previous incidents, no harm had come to anyone directly involved. Could they compare to this time? More than a hundred people in one factory, at least half of them had witnessed the giant python. Even the sedan that showed up later was likely carrying the boss. He was thrown into the river by the overturning car and soaked in the water for a long time, only daring to climb out after the python had left the scene.
Could this situation really compare with the previous rumors?
