Chapter 203: Chapter 69 Human Sentiments and Worldly Wisdom_1
"Do you think I’m a fool with too much money?" Upon hearing the young man selling the cow suggest that he should buy it, Yan Fei looked at him with annoyance and simply ignored him, continuing to walk towards the edge of the crowd.
"No, no, I genuinely didn’t bring any money with me. I thought I’d have money after selling the cow, but I can’t seem to sell it now." Seeing Yan Fei refuse, the young man became increasingly anxious. "How about I knock off a hundred yuan, is that alright? The cow hasn’t fallen ill yet right? I’ve already knocked off a hundred yuan..."
Yan Fei swung his head around and glared at the annoying young man: "Scram. Stop pestering me. It’ll be too late once I start throwing punches!"
After he said that, he turned and walked off without looking back.
The young man stopped instinctively as Yan Fei glared at him.
Xiaohei, who had been about to leave because the young man was talking, approached Yan Fei again and whispered something to him, "Is this cow’s problem serious?"
Yan Fei quietly replied, "It’s nothing major."
Xiaohei was taken aback, and his steps faltered for a moment before he continued following Yan Fei.
Truth be told, when Yan Fei was checking the cow’s teeth, he simply meant to check the cow’s age and happened to notice some rotten cabbage leaves. He didn’t take it seriously at first, he thought it just needed some observation after buying it.
After all, no one would intentionally store rotten leaves to feed the cows, it was probably just laziness, the feed just wasn’t carefully selected. There could be a chance of the cow falling sick, but it wasn’t necessarily going to fall sick. And it certainly wasn’t as serious as what was implied.
If it was all rotten leaves, the cow would not be as energetic as it currently is. He was upset by the seller’s behavior, and that’s why he’d made those remarks.
However, having said what he said earlier, he certainly could not buy it now. It was not worth it to discard his dignity for some small profit.
"Brother, how about this? I’ll knock off another hundred. One thousand eight, this price is surely low enough, right? Even if you take the cow to the vet, it won’t cost you this much! I need the money urgently, my father at home has been ill for some time, and we need the money for medical treatment! If we don’t have money for treatment, he won’t survive, otherwise I wouldn’t have sold the cow!" The young man who was selling the cow bit his lip and once again followed up with them, even mentioning his sick father this time in order to sell the cow.
Seeing the young man nagging, Yan Fei became a bit irritated. He turned around and was about to hit him when Xiaohei gently nudged him and whispered: "Buy it!"
Yan Fei was taken aback: Buy?
Xiaohei wouldn’t cheat him, and buying the cow would surely not put him at a disadvantage. But was it appropriate for him to buy it now? So many people were watching!
But since Xiaohei said so, Yan Fei had to consider it. Before he could make up his mind, Xiaohei spoke up: "Which village are you from? Is this how you disrespect your own father just to sell a cow? It’s because of your character that my brother doesn’t want to buy your cow."
"It’s true, it’s true, I didn’t lie..." The young man, whether he was pretending to be serious or truly as he said, that his father at home was critically ill, was rather convincing right now.
"Xiao Fei, what do you think?" Xiaohei turned to Yan Fei and asked.
Yan Fei was still a bit confused, but he did know one thing. Ma Yongming and others had said that Xiaohei, who always hung around the Cattle Market, was a ’sly fox’. So-called ’sly fox’, refers to the type of person who never suffers losses -- even if they lose in the short term, they certainly would have bigger benefits afterwards.
He still did not fully understand what was going on, but he knew that this deal wouldn’t be a loss at least. So he might as well listen to what this ’sly fox’ had to say!
With this in mind, he nodded at Xiaohei.
"Alright now, stop your babbling. I think you counted on my brother’s kindness. He also raises cows and has more than a dozen of them. He can’t bear to watch this cow continue to be poorly treated under your care." Once Xiaohei saw Yan Fei nod, he turned to the young man and said, "Regardless of whether what you said is true or not, we will treat it as if it is true. This is just us helping out someone in need in our jianghu community, so sell this cow to my brother!"
Xiaohei raised his voice deliberately, and everyone around could hear his words. They were taken aback just for a moment, shaking their heads and nodding in discussion. With Yan Fei’s sharp hearing, he caught all of their remarks.
And in that moment, he felt like he had gained a new insight. As expected, Xiaohei was quite astute.
Just moments ago, Xiaohei insisted that the cattle wasn’t worth a thousand yuan, and now he bought it without losing face, and had everyone around him praising him.
First it is admirable; he had willingly been cheated for the sake of not deterring anyone truly ill from seeking help due to lack of money. Secondly it is righteous; he risked buying the cattle supposedly to spare it of suffering under a young man’s care who doesn’t know how to raise cattle.
For these newfound insights alone, Yan Fei felt the 1,800 yuan spent was worthwhile.
He promptly paid the young man who was selling the cattle. Xiaohei helped jot down a record, signed it and affixed his seal. Done deal!
Once the transaction was completed, Xiaohei whispered to Yan Fei, who was leading the cattle, "Xiao Fei, don’t take this the wrong way. We can talk later, I need to go handle something. You wait here and look at the cattle, you’ll understand why I had you spend that 1,800 yuan."
With that, Xiaohei left a somewhat puzzled Yan Fei on his own and ran off.
Yan Fei was left confused. The situation seemed strange, but interestingly, this peculiarity was working out quite well for him.
Firstly, people around him were inviting him to check out their cattle, meeting him with warm smiles no matter what he thought of their cattle.
Secondly, the asking prices for the cattle he chose seemed especially reasonable.
Just how reasonable? So much so that one of the prices given by a gentleman made Yan Fei think the man was actually at a loss.
Additionally, some started asking where Yan Fei’s farm was. Once they heard he was the one selling Medicinal Wine, they grew friendlier.
Though their conversations weren’t particularly captivating, whenever he’d pass by, they’d greet him with broad smiles. The moment he’d express interest in their cattle, they would quote him a price too good to refuse.
They even brought up past incidents, like how he’d bought a calf at a ’high price’ to help a poor woman, apprehended cattle thieves, and helped a villager retrieve their stolen cattle. His deeds proved that power truly resides within the people.
Above all, they had nothing but good to say about him.
Even as Yan Fei was leaving with his five bought cattle, he could still hear praises: "See that young man? Quite sharp, right? He could tell what the cattle had been eating, called out a fraudster, and even nobly purchased the cattle..."
Xiaohei, who had been helping with the paperwork all along, didn’t have to explain anymore. Smiling contentedly, he muttered, "I initially intended that you’d frequently buy and sell cattle, so making a good name for yourself would make things easier. But I didn’t expect that fellow to bring up his own father, letting you get such a great deal."
This was a straightforward era, an age where love and loathing are clearly defined. These rural folks might kill a thief with their hoes, but their kindness would compel them to give all they could to make the world a tad bit kinder.
Nobody even thought that Yan Fei might’ve put on an act to trick the cattle seller into a deal.
For once, Yan Fei felt a tad regretful about his exceptional hearing.
With no other choice, he hastened his pace, driving the cattle towards the farm, almost as if he were fleeing the scene.
