Chapter 202: Chapter 68: Expose_1
Actually, it was not late. It was just a little while after breakfast, and those who lived far from the town and had to travel to the market were probably still on the way!
However, buying cattle was inherently unpredictable. Despite the abundance of cattle, you still had to find one that suits your personal preference. Coming early to wait at the Cattle Market and inspecting each cattle as they arrive would definitely be better than arriving late and having to rush a selection.
Right now, there weren’t many cattle or people in the Cattle Market. Yan Fei and Xiaohei only took a few steps before they arrived at their destination.
With a glance, he saw a few people who were arguing over a bull.
The bull was quite large, though it was a bit skinny. Given the current season of plentiful feed, it was impressive that the owner managed to keep the bull so thin. However, despite its thin appearance, the bull’s bone structure and body type suggested it was a fine specimen. The villagers would describe it as: This bull is not bad.
Otherwise, there wouldn’t be so many people arguing over the price, right?
Xiaohei went over and started shouting, "Stop arguing, I found someone willing to offer two thousand bucks. Those who don’t want to pay, step aside. Xiao Fei, come over, what do you think about this bull for two thousand?"
"What do I think? This bull is absolutely worth it!" Before Yan Fei could respond, a man standing beside the bull interjected. As he spoke, he slapped the bull’s back a few times. "Look, don’t mind the leanness, it’s still spirited. Don’t even mention two thousand, if it’s well-fed, you wouldn’t even get a chance to buy it for two thousand five..."
Yan Fei ignored his remarks and approached the bull. He stroked the bull’s head to calm it down, then opened its mouth to take a look.
"So, is it as I promised? An one-year-old bull, in this state and for two thousand, what else can you ask for?" The young man selling the bull prattled on incessantly, like Granny Dazui.
Yan Fei didn’t respond. He circled around the bull, inspecting it carefully.
While buying a single bull may not seem like a big deal, it’s worth getting details right given the bull’s skinniness. Otherwise, there might be an easily overlooked infectious disease lurking. Once bought back to his farm, other cattle may get infected and possibly die without Yan Fei even knowing how it happened.
"Listen young man, what can you tell from looking at it? Hurry up and bring your father over! You can trust me on this bull, if it weren’t for my sick father, he wouldn’t even consider selling it! Having this bull causes the yard to be dirty and smelly. This not only annoys my wife, but I can barely eat myself..." The man selling the bull chattered on like a machine gun, simply unable to stop.
"What did you feed the bull this morning?" Yan Fei, with growing impatience, turned and asked.
"What do you mean? What else can it feed on if not grass? It eats grass every day." The man selling the bull was taken aback by Yan Fei’s question and took a moment to respond.
"If you can feed it this skinny on just grass, then this bull must be sick. You didn’t feed it grass this morning. This bull is going to get sick. Two thousand yuan? You can’t even sell it for a thousand!" Yan Fei scoffed.
It’s a pity that this cattle salesman made Yan Fei feel annoyed with his fast talking, and Yan Fei was in a mood to teach this guy a lesson.
Listening to this cattle salesman, Yan Fei could almost guess the situation of his family. The old man at home wanted to raise a bull, but his son and daughter-in-law didn’t agree, and the son sided with his wife. The reason for not allowing the bull to be raised was not out of concern for his father’s fatigue, but it was because they were too caught up with a clean courtyard.
After a few rounds of discussion and the old man falling sick, it was evident from the way this young man harshly hit the bull earlier, that the bull was getting along just enough without the caretaking from the old man of the house.
Listening to Yan Fei’s words, the young man selling the bull jumped up, "Boy, do you know what you’re talking about? What’s wrong with my bull? Come on, explain it to me. There are so many people watching. If you can’t give a reason today, we’re not done here..."
Yan Fei looked disinterestedly at the man’s jumping up and down, which made him more annoyed. Xiaohei, seeing the young man’s reactions, was about to speak, but was stopped by Yan Fei.
Then, Yan Fei said, "Just tell me, what did you feed it this morning?"
"What did I feed it? If not grass, what else would a bull eat? If you don’t understand, don’t talk nonsense. Let me tell you, if you want to buy, then buy. If not, you better hurry up and leave. Don’t stand here and cause me trouble..." As the young man argued, the people who were gradually arriving at the Cattle Market were attracted over. Seeing the crowd grow, the young man seemed to realize something and became a bit anxious.
Yan Fei sneered at the man’s words, "You said you fed it grass. I’ll give you two thousand if we kill the bull now and examine its stomach. If it’s indeed full of grass, I’ll give you another two thousand. If there’s other stuff, you can just return my money, alright? Do you dare?"
The words from Yan Fei were calm and composed, but the surrounding crowd was immediately in an uproar. Nowadays, someone pulling out two thousand yuan to bet on whether the bull ate grass in the morning, clearly indicated that this person was either crazy or the bull indeed had a problem!
"Hehe, you are bold for someone your age! Show me the two thousand yuan first before you speak. Don’t just talk without proof..." The young man first froze when he heard Yan Fei’s proposition, then he began to laugh.
"I’m Yan Fei, ask around about me, and you’ll see. I’m not short on cash. The question is, do you dare take me on?" Yan Fei cut him off directly.
"Xiao Fei, what’s gotten into you? If you don’t want to buy, that’s fine. There’s no need to get worked up," Xiaohei, who was initially under the impression that Yan Fei was attempting to negotiate the price, advised with a chuckle, patting Yan Fei on the shoulder as he noticed that the conversation was headed in a wrong direction.
"Nothing’s wrong. I just don’t like the guy and want to give him a bit of a lesson," Yan Fei replied with a smirk.
"Ah... you... you..." Xiaohei said, looking at Yan Fei and deciding not to say more.
Yan Fei’s reputation did pack a punch, and those who were buying or selling cattle with relatives living in town liked to bring someone along. After all, when a large sum of money was at stake, it was reassuring to know a familiar face.
Even those who hadn’t met him in person had heard his name before. The whispers began anew when they heard what Yan Fei had said.
Yan Fei didn’t care what others said. He just stared at the young man selling the cow, waiting for his response.
The young man, taken aback by Yan Fei’s confrontation, might not have heard Yan Fei’s name previously. Yet, anyone bold enough to drop their name is usually not bluffing. He swallowed hard and bit his tongue, saying, "Fine, I won’t sell the cow today. How about that? I’ll take it back and raise it for a couple more months; it will fetch at least two or three thousand then. Now, I’m offering it to you for cheap, and you don’t want it? Heh..."
"If you take this cow back, it’ll fall ill, and it won’t be worth even a thousand, let alone two or three," Yan Fei scoffed.
"Are you cursing me? Don’t bully people just because you’re a local. I’m not a pushover. I’m not selling this cow. I’m taking it away," the man said as he began to untie the cow, preparing to leave.
"This cow has been fed rotten vegetable leaves and is fine for now. But once you bring it back home, it will fall sick. Whether you can even get it to the veterinary clinic is a question. Do you still want to leave?" Yan Fei retorted, unperturbed by the man’s facade.
"Huh?" The cow seller abruptly halted at Yan Fei’s words.
The onlookers caught on immediately. Most likely this man, planning to sell the cow today, had lazily fed it rotten vegetable leaves in the morning before bringing it to sell.
Isn’t that swindling? While cows can eat vegetable leaves, rotten ones are a different matter. What good could come from a cow eating rotten leaves? If a buyer unknowingly took it back, they would be in trouble within a few days if they weren’t careful. With good luck, they might notice early and get the cow to a vet. With bad luck, they might regret their purchase forever!
Just as the crowd speculated, the young man had done just that, reckoning that once the cow was sold, it was no longer his problem. He wouldn’t have bothered feeding it even vegetable leaves if he hadn’t been concerned that a hungry cow wouldn’t walk properly.
Actually, he was better off not feeding it at all! Given his attitude towards the cow, one could speculate that he didn’t even bother to separate the rotten leaves from the good ones, simply feeding it all to the cow.
Pessimistically speaking, perhaps he had an ongoing grudge against the cow and intentionally fed it rotten leaves, relishing the thought of the cow suffering in someone else’s hands!
The crowd, having understood the situation, cast their scornful gazes towards the young man while looking at Yan Fei with newfound respect. After all, for someone so young, his discernment was impressive. More seasoned cattle raisers had to concede that his eyes were sharper than theirs. All they could do was admire.
Under the crowd’s scornful gaze, the young man defended himself. "So what if I feed it vegetable leaves? It makes the cow grow faster! What’s the big deal if there were a few spoiled ones in there? I can take it to the veterinary clinic now. I don’t believe it’s hopeless."
"Go ahead! Clinics cost money. You’ll have to pay for medicines and injections, and it still might not get better. Sell it after it recovers!" Yan Fei finished, ignoring him thereafter. He turned to Xiaohei and said, "Brother Xiaohei, you can go now. I’ll continue looking around."
Xiaohei gave Yan Fei a thumbs-up: "Impressive! Having raised cows for only a few days, you’ve become more knowledgeable than me who spends all day at the cattle market. Let me know if you need anything. Don’t leave at noon; I owe you a meal!"
Yan Fei grinned.
He understood what Xiaohei meant by offering him a meal. Xiaohei had initially wanted to help him buy a cow, but he had almost ended up with a faulty one. Inadvertently, Yan Fei saved his friend and, feeling guilty, Xiaohei offered to treat him to a meal.
Seeing that the drama had ended, the onlookers began to disperse. Just then, the young man, who had started to walk away, turned back towards Yan Fei’s direction and proposed, "How about this, Brother Yan? I didn’t bring any money today, so I can’t afford treatment for the cow. Why don’t I sell it to you at a lower price, a hundred less perhaps? That should cover the cow’s medical expenses."
Having been exposed by Yan Fei, the young man knew he wouldn’t be able to sell the cow now. Regardless of whether he actually had no money or was just pretending, or perhaps out of fear that the cow wouldn’t recover even after treatment, he had the audacity to seek out Yan Fei again.
Some of those who hadn’t left yet looked at Yan Fei as soon as the young man proposed this plan, waiting for his decision.
