Carrying a Jurassic on me -
Chapter 176 - 52
Chapter 176: 52
When Miss Xu Xiaoyan was in the house, she was full of swagger and confidence. As soon as she stepped outside, however, she quickly stuffed the money into her bag, clutching it tightly to her chest like a thief in silence, her head bowed as she hastily walked on.
After a while, she let out a long sigh, looking skittish. Turning to Yan Fei, she said, "Oh my, I was too caught up in my anger and let them see that we have so much money. What are we going to do now? You’re not annoyed that I flaunted our wealth, are you?"
Yan Fei tried hard not to burst out laughing at her reaction. "Don’t worry. What’s done is done. Nothing to fuss about!"
"Oh, come on, why are you like this? Hurry up and speak up!" She hopped anxiously by Yan Fei’s side as they walked, urging him on.
"What do you want me to say?" Yan Fei feigned innocence. "We’ll talk it over with others first. Let them know that you’re my wife now, so anyone who has any intentions should give up as early as possible. After that, it’s just a matter of making the rounds for marriage proposals!"
"At this stage, you still want to make marriage proposals?" Xu Xiaoyan widened her eyes, staring in disbelief at Yan Fei.
"What’s wrong with wanting to propose? Your parents know about us, and it’s fine if they don’t like it as long as we do. If they still refuse, we can just host a banquet and invite everyone. They can choose to come or not!"
"What if my dad agrees but asks for the bride price? He saw that we have so much money earlier!"
"So what if he saw? He can’t rob us, can he? Whatever other families offer, we’ll match up to but not exceed that."
"You...huff! I don’t care anymore. Do whatever you want!" With a huff, she stopped talking to him and went about her way.
Shortly after, Yan Fei heard Xu Xiaoyan sigh, her voice woeful. "I dread to think how angry my dad must be now..."
"Why worry about it? Your mom and your sisters are all at home! They’re keeping an eye on him, so relax. I’m sure it’s fine." Yan Fei offered, not because he cared for Old Xu, but because he didn’t want to upset Xu Xiaoyan.
After a pause, he added, "Didn’t he want to marry you into a wealthy family? Now that he’s seen our wealth, he might be thrilled!"
"Pfft... Don’t you dare talk about my dad like that... nevermind, you can say whatever you want... I can’t be bothered anymore. I’m so drained; I need to sleep!" Torn between options, she yawned as an excuse to end the conversation. She quickened her pace with Yan Fei, heading towards the cattle field.
She complained about being tired and indeed, she was. After a day of selling cattle, saying goodbye to classmates, and a tumultuous evening, it would be strange if she wasn’t exhausted.
But when she finally got to bed, she was tossing and turning: "Yan Xiaofei, tell me, why are there people like Granny Dazui who gossip without considering others’ feelings..."
"How would I know? It’s pretty normal that all sorts of people exist, isn’t it?" Yan Fei replied lazily, lying on the rattan chair.
Originally, he would have slept next door, but Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t sleep and insisted that he stay with her. She even wanted him to leave only after she fell asleep. It was already midnight, yet Xu Xiaoyan was still full of energy.
"Hey! Do you think Granny Dazui will continue...you know... blabbing about us to my dad?" She rolled over on the bed, propped herself up on the edge, and peered at Yan Fei, her eyes sparkling.
"Dare she?" Yan Fei scoffed contemptuously.
"What’s there for her to dare or not? She’s not a man; you can’t just beat her up. Besides, she looks so frail that she might kick the bucket if you as much as touch her, causing us more trouble!"
"So what if she’s not a man? If she deserves a thrashing, she’ll get one. But you’re right, she’s old and frail. We’ll need to think of another way to stop her from gossiping." With that, Yan Fei started plotting a plan of action.
"Why not pick up a dead cat or dog somewhere, and throw it into their yard..." As soon as Granny Dazui was mentioned, Xu Xiaoyan was filled with hatred, her teeth literally grinding.
"What kind of solution is that? What’s going on in your head!"
"What’s wrong with it? I heard someone else did it! Didn’t someone try this already?" The girl was still defiant, wondering why her ’brilliant’ plan wouldn’t work.
"Do you understand you’re asking me to pick up dead cats and dogs, aren’t you grossed out?" Yan Fei was almost laugh-crying because of this foolish girl.
"Yuck? Oh, yuck... it is disgusting. Why did you remind me? You really forced me to think about those gross things - now I can’t sleep." She spoke as though she could sleep just fine if Yan Fei hadn’t brought it up in the first place.
"You were the one who brought it up in the first place!"
"I didn’t think it through when I said it, so blame me - whatever. Anyway, you need to hurry up and think of something else or I’m not going to sleep. Start thinking... Now!" The girl simply began to play the blame game, righteously acting as if she were giving an order to ’start thinking.’
Yan Fei: "..."
Since when do you have to yell ’get ready’ when prompting someone to think? How am I supposed to think like this?
Fine, you want me to think, I’ll think!
Yan Fei, with narrowed eyes, laid down on the rattan chair and began deep thinking.
The girl continued to mumble, offering her eccentric "suggestions" for him to consider.
Suggestions like using the dog from the yard to scare people, or hiring a few bad guys to intimidate Granny Dazui. At worst, it would only mean that Yan Fei would have to play the "villain." Some absurd ideas even involved creating cursed paper dolls and puppets. Who knows what was going on in this girl’s mind.
Suddenly, Yan Fei jerked up and turned to the girl, "What did you just say?"
The girl was very dissatisfied, "You weren’t listening to me?"
"I did, but I didn’t catch that last sentence clearly." Yan Fei lied smoothly, knowing that telling the truth would probably land him in trouble.
Only this girl could manage to treat him like this. Suppose it were anyone else, Yan Fei would send them flying with a kick. Then again, not just anyone else would have grown up with him and frequently carried him home, right?
"Humph!" The girl snorted. "Fine, let’s just drop it. You know what we could do instead? We could sneak into Granny Dazui’s house at night and padlock her front door from outside. This way, she and her family couldn’t get out of the house in the morning..."
"And where are we going to get a padlock? Buying one would cost money. Besides, they could just climb over the wall or remove the door and get out. Or they could shout for the neighbors to help break open the door...You should rather sleep. I’ll think of a strategy soon!" As Yan Fei rebutted casually, his mind was spinning fast, grasping for the spark of inspiration he’d just had.
"You..." The girl felt deeply, painfully misunderstood and very aggrieved - since when had her brains ranked beneath a small fool?
Indeed, the houses in the town were not much better than those in the countryside, apart from a few newly built apartments. The rest were nothing more than low walls with dilapidated small wooden doors. The doors could barely hang on their hinges, and some walls didn’t even reach human height. The girl’s proposal would barely qualify as a minor inconvenience, besides the expense of buying a padlock.
Deeply dispirited and having had a long day, the girl soon fell asleep amid her annoyed mutterings. Meanwhile, Yan Fei had some thoughts and intended to get revenge on behalf of the girl tomorrow...
