Chapter 175: Chapter 51: Have you seen money?_1
It was clear to Xu Xiaoyan’s two elder sisters that their little sister and Yan Fei were indeed a match made in heaven, both of them being equally doltish. They realized that it was futile trying to reason with them. It didn’t matter if they were graduates or postgraduates, even a couple of doctorates wouldn’t have made a difference.
"You..." Xu Xiaoyan’s eldest sister was at her wits end. "Fine, maybe it’s true what people say about our Xiao Yan becoming a child bride. If Yan wants to visit for a few days, that should be fine. But do you have room for her? You’re not planning on moving in together right now, are you?"
"Sister, what are you talking about?" Xu Xiaoyan stomped her foot, very embarrassed.
"Big sis, why would you let Laosan stay at somebody else’s house?" Xu Family’s second daughter wasn’t pleased at all.
"So what should we do then? Can you persuade this stubborn girl to get back home?" The elder sister shot back, leaving the second daughter speechless.
"There’s plenty of room. Haven’t you seen several houses in a row on my property? There are more houses in the inner courtyard, enough to accommodate a few more people." Yan Fei, overhearing the conversation, knew these two sisters were on Xu Xiaoyan’s side. So he decided to add a few more sentences to explain the situation.
"Yan Xiaofei, you want to bring a few more over?! One wife isn’t enough for you?!" Xu Xiaoyan’s mood had significantly improved ever since her sisters stopped trying to persuade her to return home. Her parents’ words had hurt her, making her overthink and become very upset. But now, she seemed to have accepted the situation. Initially feeling terribly embarrassed, she was now back to her usual self, picking at Yan Fei’s words again.
"I meant..." Yan Fei started, but stopped midway seeing his lover’s teasing smile. He gave up on his explanation.
The two sisters were utterly flabbergasted by the young woman’s ever-changing moods. The elder sister finally intervened: "Do you need to take anything with you? If you don’t want to go back, we can help you bring your stuff out?"
"No need, there’s no need to bring anything. The cattle farm has everything. There’s no need to trouble...oh..." Xu Xiaoyan nonchalantly responded, abruptly exclaiming with surprise halfway.
"What happened?" The other three got a start, thinking something had gone wrong with the younger girl. They immediately asked about it.
"I left my bag on the bed!"
"Ah..." The others let out a collective sigh of relief.
"You forgot, I’ve got that... that... sale of cattle..." Seeing Yan Fei unfazed, a nervous Xu Xiaoyan pulled at him, whispering into his ear.
"No way, I need to get it back as soon as possible." Without waiting for Yan Fei’s response, the girl turned her back to him and started jogging back home.
"You silly girl, wait for us!" Both sisters were confused. They gave chase, running after her and yelling.
Mute, Yan Fei could only afford to silently jog along behind them.
Finally, there was a spectacle to behold for the people who, having finished their dinner, were strolling or chilling by the roadside.
Three girls running ahead, closely followed by a young lad in pursuit. What a rare sight!
Luckily, Xu Xiaoyan slowed down after a few paces, turning her jog into brisk walk.
"There’s no rush, it’s fine. Even if you lose it at your house, you can still earn more. No need to run." Yan Fei managed to catch up, comforting her.
"Even if it’s not lost, I need to get it back as soon as possible..." The energetic girl walked so fast it seemed as if the wind was blowing under her feet.
Yan Fei decided to keep quiet and simply follow her.
Since the two of them weren’t speaking, the sisters didn’t bother either. No matter what they said, these two wouldn’t listen. So they decided to drop the issue for now and discuss it in a few days, once the couple have figured things out on their own.
All four of them entered the courtyard in silence. Yan Fei took a couple of steps forward, walking in front of Xu Xiaoyan, chest out and head held high. He led the way, storming into the house first, and then stood there rigidly near the door, his face as stern as ever.
Granny Dazui, who was inside the house talking, saw them come in. Everyone looked rather downcast, and she instinctively stopped speaking.
Xu Xiaoyan didn’t utter a word, came out from behind him, and went into the room to grab her bag. "Let’s go!" She said to Yan Fei.
Old Xu looked stunned, then exploded in rage: "Go? Go where do you think you’re going?"
Old Xu had thrown around his weight in the house for years. Xu Xiaoyan couldn’t help but feel a bit cowed by his rage. Yan Fei, unhappy to see Xu Xiaoyan being scolded, shot back at Old Xu defiantly: "She’s going to be my wife. I’ll pay for her university fees. There’s no need for you to worry."
"You?" Old Xu became even angrier and stood up pointing at Yan Fei and cursing, "When is it your turn to speak for our family? You brat, you don’t even have enough life experience! You’re already thinking about getting a wife? Have you learned to dream big now?"
Old Xu was furious, though his thin, frail body made his anger less intimidating. He was dwarfed standing next to Yan Fei. It was quite odd, Old Xu being so thin and frail, yet his three daughters, just like their mother, were tall and long-legged. They didn’t resemble him in character or appearance.
It was a good thing the daughters did not resemble him, or with his behavior, they would have had trouble finding a husband, let alone going to school.
Looking at Old Xu’s small frame, Yan Fei found himself not angry at all. Rather, he found the situation amusing, treating the man who was gruff to him since childhood, like a hapless chick, easily crushed in one hand. He feared that raising his voice could cause Old Xu to faint.
Silent Yan Fei is more annoying than loud Yan Fei!
His gaze was like that of a person looking at an ant, condescending and slightly pitiful. Old Xu was so furious that his whole body trembled and he stuttered, unable to say a word.
Xu Xiaoyan’s mother hurried over to steady Old Xu, and Xu Xiaoyan’s two sisters also rushed over to calm things down.
At this point, it seemed Granny Dazui thought it was time to intervene. She let out a dry laugh, then said, "Aye, whose child is this, bringing such disrespect? The girl belongs to her family, you can’t just..."
"Shut up," Yan Fei interrupted her, unwilling to listen to her droning. "Mind your own business, don’t create trouble for your family."
"Yo..." Granny Dazui was stunned and then gasped. She knew to stay away from such hot-headed youth. If a reckless youth physically assaulted her, who would she cry to?
Still, the obstinate old lady turned to Xu Xiaoyan and said, "Miss Xu, it’s not me being nosy...I’m saying for your own good, find a wealthy family. Old Liu’s family said last year, if a bride has a technical secondary school qualification, the bride price is six thousand yuan. If you go to college, how can they mistreat you? Not to mention tuition, just the bride price alone should be at least ten to fifteen thousand...."
Xu Xiaoyan still had some fear facing her father, but she showed no respect for Granny Dazui. She interrupted Granny Dazui saying: "If Liu’s family is so good, why don’t you marry into their family? Or send your daughter or granddaughter, go on and marry into their family! Humph..."
Still fuming, she reached into her bag and pulled out a wad of cash and waved it in the old lady’s face: "See, this is ten to fifteen thousand. Madam, I don’t give a damn! This is the pocket money Yan Fei gave me. Have you ever seen so much money before, you old beggar..."
"Ah..." Several gasps rang out, and then there was complete silence. Everyone in the room was stunned, even Old Xu forgot to be angry.
The money in the girl’s hand was all hundred yuan notes with Mao’s face on it. Over ten thousand yuan was easily more than a hundred notes. It wasn’t neat and orderly, like newly withdrawn banknotes. Heizi had initially rolled it up and hid it on him, and later it had ended up in Xu Xiaoyan’s bag. It was loose and untidy, it was hard to tell how much money there was exactly.
To everyone else, it seemed like there was a lot of money, a lot of money...
Who could casually pull out such a wad of cash at that time? Let alone show it off, they hadn’t even seen such an amount. Most of the people in this room probably haven’t seen it either. They were all dumbstruck. No one commented on Xu Xiaoyan’s harsh words - they were planning to marry her off to a drooling fool, so how could they expect kind words from her?
As for Xu Xiaoyan bragging about it being her pocket money, no one believed it - they couldn’t estimate how much money she was holding, but guessed it was possibly several tens of thousands, enough to build a two-story western-style house. Who could believe that her pocket money was worth a small western-style house?
Regardless of what others thought, Xu Xiaoyan finished her display of wealth and turned to Yan Fei, "Let’s go, time to head back."
She led the way and Yan Fei followed.
They left quite decisively.
