Chapter 1568: Chapter 752: Be Humble in Life
Using the idiom "each day felt like a year" to describe Hu Yidao’s last two morning classes is just too apt.
It was just the start of school, and all the teachers were new faces, so he didn’t dare to keep asking Yan Fei how he planned to solve the problem during class. It felt like sitting on pins and needles as he endured through the last two agonizing periods.
Once the school bell rang for dismissal, Hu Yidao immediately packed up his textbooks: "Old Yan, what are you planning to do exactly?"
"We have to see the people involved before we can make any decisions!" Yan Fei’s composure made Hu Yidao feel very uneasy. "Maybe those two guys were just unwilling to be called out, and they might not have been able to recognize you guys clearly in the dark. Your concerns might be unnecessary!"
"Is that possible?" Hu Yidao didn’t buy it. "The people who walk their dogs around here at night definitely live nearby. I’m not sure about the others, but I was the one who pushed them away first. They would definitely remember me with no problem."
Yan Fei glanced at Hu Yidao: "It’s possible, with your looks; they’re indeed hard to forget."
"What, you’ve noticed my ruggedly handsome charm now?" Hu Yidao tried to make light of the situation with a joke.
"No, it’s that you’re so specifically ugly, that’s why people remember you," Yan Fei said with a laugh as he slung his backpack over his shoulder. "Let’s go; I need to hurry back. If they’re not at the gate, I’m heading home first and will come back after dinner."
"Sure, just don’t delay going home." Hu Yidao, thinking that Yan Fei lived with his family, showed understanding.
Upon leaving the classroom, Yan Fei pushed his bicycle as he and Hu Yidao headed towards the school gate. As they got closer to the gate, Hu Yidao became more anxious: "Old Yan, can I call you Brother Yan? You’re not actually planning to go out and fight them, are you? If so, just forget it. If things get out of hand, all the hard work we did to get into university would have been for nothing."
"Fight? What fight?" Yan Fei laughed. "Relax! We are civilized people. How can we possibly get involved in such uncivilized behavior as fighting?"
When they got a bit closer to the school gate, Hu Yidao began to look around alertly, and then with a burst of surprise said: "They seem not to have come after all?"
Yan Fei reminded him: "Even if they wanted to corner someone, they wouldn’t do it right in front of the school, right?"
Hu Yidao suddenly felt a bit disheartened: "I hope they’re not right in front of us and we just don’t see them... Damn, they really are there. See those two people between the big trees at the bank entrance across the road? That’s them. I remember very clearly, one of them has dyed yellow hair."
"They definitely wouldn’t come to the school gate to find us. Keep walking," Yan Fei took a glance in that direction, memorized the appearance of the two individuals, and continued to walk with his bicycle towards his home. "You keep an eye on them so they won’t notice us."
Hu Yidao inwardly lamented but, being a straightforward guy, he trusted Yan Fei could handle the situation. Feeling obligated not to let him down, he grimaced ferociously as he stared over at them for a few moments.
"Did neither of them recognize me?" There weren’t too many nor too few students leaving school, and those two guys didn’t spot Hu Yidao at all. He grimaced and stared in their direction for a while, but the two were still watching the school gate!
"Wave at them," Yan Fei said, determined to resolve the issue and not willing to abandon it midway.
If they hadn’t seen these two guys at noon, maybe it would have been just as he said earlier: last night, those two were simply begrudgingly shouting a few words. But since they discovered them at the school gate at noon, the problem had to be solved—if they didn’t recognize Hu Yidao now, what about other students coming out later? Who knew how long these idle guys would be patient to wait for a few days?
The little courage Hu Yidao had mustered when he left the school gate was mostly used up after his ’provocation’, and now hearing that Yan Fei wanted him to wave at those guys, he couldn’t help but harbor a faint hope: "I think maybe they just didn’t get a clear look at us?"
"Then try walking in front of them," Yan Fei quipped. "It’s better to be safe than sorry. If it were you coming out alone, with your skills, you might be able to escape from just the two of them. But what about other students?"
With that, Hu Yidao braced himself: "Then I’ll walk past them, you wait here for me."
Yan Fei nodded encouragingly with a chuckle.
Yan Fei actually understood Hu Yidao’s nervousness very well. Even if Hu Yidao wasn’t exactly the model student back at home, being new in Provincial City and just entering university, he’d naturally want to live harmoniously and avoid trouble as much as possible.
In fact, most people would feel the same way. When arriving in a unfamiliar place and environment, unless one has the confidence, not many would be willing to stir up trouble on purpose.
While Hu Yidao moved towards them, Yan Fei took out his phone and called his wife to tell her he would be home late and to start dinner without him.
On the other side, Hu Yidao decided to go through with it, striding confidently towards them while keeping his eyes fixated on the two men. Before he got directly across from them, the two guys already noticed him.
One guy smirked coldly at him, made a gesture as if holding a pistol, then signaled his companion and prepared to walk along the same side of the road as Hu Yidao, across the street.
