Chapter 1527: Chapter 734: The Real Men
In the darkness, the honk of a big truck jolted Lin Haihu from his sleep.
He groggily reached out, and finally fished a bottle of water from under his butt. After unscrewing the cap and gulping down two mouthfuls, he began to slow down, sipping as he asked, "Cousin, where are we now?"
"We’ve reached Jiang City," Yan Fei casually replied while driving. "We’re about to cross the big bridge soon, and by tomorrow morning, we’ll arrive at..."
"Poof..." Lin Haihu froze, and the water he was drinking sprayed out. "Damn, how long have I been asleep?"
"Not too long, I just drove fast," Yan Fei answered calmly. "You get all nervous driving at 80, but I was just pushing over 200. Of course we got here fast!"
"Damn, damn, you’re crazy!" Lin Haihu exclaimed loudly. "I’m your cousin, your flesh and blood. And don’t forget, your wife, your brother, they’re all your flesh and blood..."
"Keep it down, don’t disturb their sleep," Yan Fei chastised in a hushed tone. "I have confidence in my speed. Plus, there’s still a stretch of highway to go. Look, you’re fine, aren’t you?"
"No, I have to check this out—no, how can it be so fast?" Lin Haihu felt that something was off, but couldn’t quite figure out what it was. After pondering for a long time, he finally remembered to check his high-end "watch."
"Definitely something fishy. We had just passed Ming City when I fell asleep. I figured we had about fifteen or sixteen hundred li left... damn, this watch is such a rip-off. It’s supposed to be luminous but needs light to glow—when there’s no light, it can’t shine at all!"
"Can you just stay still for a bit?" Yan Fei burst out laughing, watching him fumbling with his watch in the fleeting light from passing cars. "Can you stop buying these crappy things from now on; it’s so embarrassing. Always showing off like you own the world, you don’t even realize how embarrassing you look!"
"How am I embarrassing? These things are all brand-name goods," Lin Haihu wasn’t having it, completely forgetting why he had been examining the watch in the first place. "They’re all reputable brands, do you even understand what a brand means? Sure, you’re wealthy, but looking at the crap you wear every day, it’s embarrassing—I feel embarrassed for you, too stingy to buy a single brand-name item..."
"You’re talking about that watch that could stink up a foot with sweat and kill a fish when washed in a river, that luminous watch which glows during the day but won’t light up at night? Those ’brand-name goods’, I really don’t get it." Yan Fei enjoyed the banter with him.
From behind, Xu Xiaoyan cuddled the sleeping Xiaochao, nodding off herself. The girl had already been woken up earlier, but she never asked any unnecessary questions. Only this blockhead Lin Haihu, who had plenty of them and was now busy checking his watch—was covering a thousand li in less than an hour considered a feat? This was all thanks to Yan Fei deliberately leaving early. Otherwise, they would have reached Sancha River town by now.
But if they really arrived in the town, it would be impossible to explain to others.
The real reason was simple: Yan Fei found the ride too slow, and once Lin Haihu grew too tired to drive, Yan Fei would take over. As they fell asleep, he let them rest in ’another world’ for a moment, and naturally, they would arrive in Jiang City.
Drowsy in the car, people can’t quite grasp the passage of time. If they reached home, they’d definitely check the time, and Yan Fei would have to come up with some supernatural excuse to explain how he ’drove’ home in an hour.
Now things were going well, as Lin Haihu was earnestly proving to Yan Fei that his belongings were all ’brand-name,’ even his underwear was from ’Seven Dogs,’ a well-known brand. As far as Yan Fei was concerned, it was just someone entertaining him on the road.
After talking for a while, Lin Haihu himself found it pointless to show off to his cousin, feeling like throwing a precious pearl into darkness. He didn’t get it and couldn’t brag about it—plus, his cousin was richer than him, there was no sense of superiority!
After a while, Lin Haihu muttered, "Cousin, do you think Director Pi’s group are all people who’ve done big things? Are they like cops wounded on duty or people like Tai Guang?"
Yan Fei was taken aback, "What’s up? Why do you ask?"
"Nothing, just hehe!" Lin Haihu said, somewhat embarrassed. "I just think this group of guys look so manly. Some of them don’t even care about their injuries, and I feel the pain for them, yet they’re all laughing and joking..."
Lin Haihu was embarrassed because he usually acted tough, like Chunibyo teenagers who always thought they were the best; when he secretly admired others, he found it hard to admit.
Tai Guang, Chen Tai Guang, was one of the two soldiers who rushed into the floodwaters to save their comrades and the public during a flood disaster.
Usually, they acted just like anyone else, never uttering a word of complaint or exhaustion, but those in the know were aware that even just frolicking like normal people meant enduring discomfort on their bodies, not to mention doing strenuous work.
Yan Fei smiled, "Pretty much. Anyway, you’re right about them being real men; they certainly are."
"I knew they were different!" Lin Haihu murmured.
"I never thought you had such insight!" Yan Fei laughed. "You should learn from them more often and not get startled at every little thing."
"How old are they? How old am I?" Lin Haihu was defiant. "If I was like them now, wouldn’t I be an old man?"
"Suit yourself," Yan Fei chuckled.
