Chapter 1506: Chapter 723: Volunteering to Give Away a Horse_2
An Changhe was a little dazed, but Yan Fei smiled again, "Alright, take your time filling out your university preferences. We can talk about the tuition fee when the acceptance letter arrives. I meant what I said just now, don’t worry."
By around ten o’clock, the teacher finally came in and began distributing the application forms for university preferences.
When it came to filling out university preferences, the teachers couldn’t offer much advice. They only shared their experiences when students asked. No.2 High School was not a very good school. The previous years’ exam results had always been a mess, and there wasn’t much experience to share—perhaps the universities and majors that were unpopular in previous years would suddenly see an influx of applicants? Predicting these things was really difficult.
However, one thing was clear to everyone, and that was the expansion of university enrollment quotas. This meant that more people would be able to leave the small town by passing the college entrance exam. It also meant that there might be a few less people who have to consider marriage or who start thinking about where to work when others are starting their university life next year.
Yan Fei’s preferences were filled out in a way that made you unsure whether to call him confident or just stubborn. All his preferences were for Provincial Agricultural University. The difference lay in the three majors he chose: the first two were Bioengineering and Biotechnology, the third was Forestry.
An Changhe’s choices were more reasonable. The first was China Agricultural University, the second was Provincial University, and the third was Provincial Agricultural University. Many students filled out their forms this way. A lot of students choose their first preference just to try their luck, fearing they might waste points if they scored higher than expected. Accordingly, the second preference they filled out would be a bit lower, to ensure a greater likelihood of admission. And the third preference served as a backup.
Another large group of students, who had little hope, just fervently flipped through the application guide, desperately searching for unpopular and lesser-known universities, hoping to get lucky and receive a letter of acceptance.
In reality, based on No.2 High School’s past performance, out of hundreds of students taking the college entrance exam, it would be quite good if thirty to forty of them received a formal notice of acceptance—and don’t think this roughly one in ten ratio was good, because it included universities that took students through adjustment. Typically, these schools only send out notices just before other universities start their term. After studying for years and repeating it countless times when returning to the village, the villagers still wouldn’t remember the school’s name.
After the noisy and bustling process of filling out preferences was done, the normally serious class teacher stood up and said a few emotional words, "Those who are going to eat and drink, go ahead quickly! Just don’t forget to come back and visit after you have achieved success. You students don’t understand now, but you will in the future. Cherish the present, and I wish you all successful careers."
After the teacher left, there was a brief moment of sentimentality among everyone, but it was soon replaced by the allure of the imagined future. Many failed to realize that after making promises about staying in touch, perhaps from this day on, the next time they met would be in several years. The bright young girls might have turned into middle-aged aunts, while the elegant young boys would have become greasy middle-aged men...
And even more likely, they would never meet again—or perhaps years later, they might have passed by each other on the street in some unfamiliar city, brushing shoulders without any recognition...
Yan Fei certainly didn’t bother to entertain such notions. After spending a while more with his classmates in the classroom, he took his wife and went home.
Little Yan Chao was anxiously waiting at home and immediately asked when the big horse they could ride would arrive. Yan Fei did not know when it would come. Even the long-haul drivers on the road these days could not guarantee the time, no one could say for sure when they would definitely arrive.
But Yan Fei had a way to distract the little guy, telling him to go play with little Heizi.
It wasn’t long after lunch that Yan Fei received a call from the driver delivering the horses, saying they were expected to arrive by midnight. As soon as little Yan Chao heard the news, he didn’t even want to sleep that evening, preparing himself to wait up for the chance to ride a horse!
Although they said it would be at midnight, the horses actually arrived the following morning.
News travels fast in the farm, and even before the horses were off the truck, a crowd from Sancha River had come to see the excitement. In recent years, horses had become a rare sight in Sancha River. Not to mention riding horses, even those used for pulling carts were hard to find.
Apart from the two drivers, two middle-aged men who raised horses also came along. As they unloaded the horses, they warned, "Hurry up and take them for a walk. We only stopped once on the way and didn’t dare to let them loose. They’ve probably lost so much condition that it will take half a month to get it back."
Yan Fei waved his hand, "Whoever wants to ride, come and take one! Don’t blame me if you get kicked..."
"They won’t kick, they won’t kick, they’re all well trained," one of the middle-aged men exclaimed, startled. "No problem, they’re all very gentle. We’ve selected them to be ridden on, it’s all good."
In the midst of laughter, one person squeezed out of the crowd and started gesturing to Yan Fei with wuwula sounds, showing such enthusiasm!
Yan Fei pointed to the horses, then to himself, and finally to everyone. The mute instantly became happy, stepping forward to look at each horse over and over again and even knew to pry open their mouths to check.
The horse-breeder couldn’t help but laugh, "The boss here has someone who understands horses? This brother looks like an expert at just a glance. We can rest assured now, when the horses come to your place and have the pasture, they surely won’t be wronged."
Heizi laughed and said, "Don’t flatter him too much, he won’t hear you anyway, he’s a mute. But he really does know a bit about horses, he learned to shoe horses from an old man in our town since he was young, with experience hugged right out of holding horse legs every day."
If it weren’t for Heizi’s reminder, Yan Fei almost forgot. The mute indeed learned to shoe horses since he was young, but as the number of horses in the countryside dwindled, he became an unemployed vagrant, relying on carrying manure and water to get by, until eventually he became part of the cattle farm.
Nobody expected that now the ranch actually got horses, and the skills the mute had learned years ago finally had a place to be put to use.
Seeing the mute’s passion for horses, Yan Fei made a direct decision: "From now on, these horses will be taken care of by Gao Bin. Nobody has any objections, right?"
Nobody would object. Despite the youngsters being quite enthusiastic about horses, when it came to raising them, even including the soldiers, it was doubtful anyone had the experience of feeding horses.
Heizi gestured with the mute for a long while. Once the mute understood, he shoved the horse he was holding toward Heizi’s hands and turned to run. Others couldn’t get his attention by calling after him, as he just ran off without a trace.
Everyone was clueless about what was happening until Heizi quickly thought to call his wife and asked her to check with her brother what he ran off to do.
It wasn’t long before Gao Rui called, "My brother said he’s going to move his stuff over there, and live there to look after the horses from now on."
As expected, it wasn’t long until the mute came chugging along on a hand-tractor, the cart filled with his bedding. Upon arrival, he gestured to Yan Fei, asking Yan Fei to arrange a place for him to stay.
Yan Fei nonchalantly pointed for him to find a dorm by himself, then turned to deal with Heizi: "Are you planning on letting your uncle live with the horses forever, huh?"
Heizi immediately got the gist and felt quite wronged: "We talked about it. What can I do if he doesn’t want to?"
"Then it’s not my concern. Anyway, it’s your family’s business, you guys figure it out," Yan Fei didn’t plan to meddle, just giving a heads-up.
Yan Chao was originally still lazing in bed, but for some reason, upon hearing the neighing of horses outside, he ran out in his underpants: "I want to ride a horse..."
The little guy had learned the skill of charming people on his own, and was very popular in the ranch. Someone immediately asked the master who delivered the horses which one was the most gentle, then took the little guy to ride a horse.
The master who brought the horses, probably the original owner of these horses, was a rather robust person, treating the horses gently. After arriving here and seeing the lush green pasture, he was in a very good mood, and now he actively led the horse for Yanfei, constantly praising, "I’ve sold many horses, but yours is the most reassuring place. This pasture is even better than ours..."
Yan Fei looked at the lively scene, but still felt a little uneasy— he was still wondering how much the people at Director Pi’s knew about him! If they were really playing a long game, then his joyful little life might not last much longer...
